Book Virgin Martyrs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karen A. Winstead
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2018-05-31
  • ISBN : 1501711571
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Virgin Martyrs written by Karen A. Winstead and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the torture and execution of beautiful Christian women first appeared in late antiquity and proliferated during the early Middle Ages. A thousand years later, virgin martyrs were still the most popular female saints. Their legends, in countless retellings through the centuries, preserved a standard plot—the heroine resists a pagan suitor, endures cruelties inflicted by her rejected lover or outraged family, works miracles, and dies for Christ. That sequence was embellished by incidents emblematic of the specific saint: Juliana's battle with the devil, Barbara's immurement in the tower, Katherine's encounter with spiked wheels. Karen A. Winstead examines this seemingly static story form and discovers subtle shifts in the representation of the virgin martyrs, as their legends were adapted for changing audiences in late medieval England.

Book Chaste Passions

Download or read book Chaste Passions written by Karen Anne Winstead and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virgin martyrs make up one of the largest categories of medieval saints. To judge by their frequent appearances in art and literature, they also figure among the most venerated. The legends of virgin martyrs, retold in various ways through the centuries, illuminate trends in popular piety, values, and literary tastes. Chaste Passions contains sixteen English virgin martyr legends, each of a different saint and each translated into colloquial, modern English prose. Faithful in tone and meaning to the originals, Karen Winstead's lively translations allow contemporary readers to appreciate why virgin martyr legends thrived for hundreds of years. Winstead presents the tales in chronological order, tracing the effects of the composition and tastes of the audience on the development of the genre. The virgin martyr, Winstead tells us, escapes the confining female stereotypes--demure maiden or disruptive shrew--prevalent in writings of the period. Because nearly all of the texts were written by men but addressed to women, they exhibit a fascinating interplay between male views of so-called women's literature and the demands of their intended audience. Familiarity with this widely read genre is essential to a full understanding of medieval culture, and Chaste Passions is an excellent introduction to these often racy, sometimes comic, tales

Book The Displacement of the Body in lfric s Virgin Martyr Lives

Download or read book The Displacement of the Body in lfric s Virgin Martyr Lives written by Dr Alison Gulley and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Displacement of the Body in Ælfric's Virgin Martyr Lives addresses 10th-century Old English hagiographical translations, from Latin source material, by the abbot and grammarian Ælfric. The vitae of Agnes, Agatha, Lucy, and Eugenia, and the married saints Daria, Basilissa, and Cecilia, included in Ælfric's s Old English Lives of Saints, recount the lives, persecution, and martyrdom of young women who renounce sex and, in the first four stories, marriage, to devote their lives to Christian service. They purport to be about the primacy of virginity and the role of the body in attaining sanctity. However, a comparison of the Latin sources with Ælfric's versions suggests that his translation style, characterized by simplifying the most important meanings of the text, omits certain words or entire episodes that foreground suppressed female sexuality as key to sainthood. The Old English Lives de-emphasize the physical nature of faith and highlight the importance of spiritual purity. In this volume, Alison Gulley explores how the context of the Benedictine Reform in late Anglo-Saxon England and Ælfric's commitment to writing for a lay audience resulted in a set of stories depicting a spirituality distinct from physical intactness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virgin Mary has been idealized as a self-sacrificing mother throughout Christian history, but she is not the only ancient maternal figure whose story is connected to violent loss. This book examines several ancient representations of mothers and children in contexts of sociopolitical violence, demonstrating that notions of early Christian motherhood, as today, are contextual and produced for various political, social, and ethical reasons. In each chapter, the ancient maternal figure is juxtaposed with an example of contemporary maternal activism to show that maternal self-sacrifice can be understood as strategic, varied, politically charged, and rhetorically flexible.

Book Life of Saint Cecilia

Download or read book Life of Saint Cecilia written by Prosper Gueranger and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church offers, in every age, in her Saints, Apostles, and Martyrs, brilliant examples of virtue, zeal, and heroic courage. While all are holy, there are still some, whose lives present features, at once so touching and sublime, that time can detract nothing from the interest which attaches to their names in every Catholic heart. Pre-eminent among these, is St. Cecilia, the gentle queen of Sacred Song, distinguished alike for her attachment to holy Virginity, her apostolic zeal, and the unfaltering courage by which she won the martyr's crown. The author has followed with fidelity, the ancient Acts of St. Cecilia, the authenticity of which the reader will find satisfactorily defended in his pages. For less important details, he has claimed the right generally accorded to historians, of receiving probable evidence, where certain proofs cannot be ob- tained. On such authority, he has, for example, assumed with the learned Bosio and others, that the virtues of our Saint formed the crowning glory of the illustrious family of Cecilia Metella. The recital does not terminate with the death of Cecilia. The discoveries of her tomb, in the ninth and sixteenth centuries, form not the least interesting portion of the work. The description of the church which was once her dwelling, and the witness of her sufferings and triumphs, brings those scenes so vividly before us, that Cecilia seems to belong, as all the Saints of God most truly do, as much to our own day, as to the period when she still combated on earth. We will not speak of the pleasure and instruction the author has afforded by his faithful pictures of the celebrated Ways of Ancient Rome, and the sacred cities of the dead, concealed in the holy shades beneath. For this, and much other interesting information, we refer the reader to the following pages, content, if, by our own humble labors, we have contributed to the edification of our Catholic brethren, and to the glory of Him who is admirable in His Saints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “delightful” tour of Rome’s St. Agnes Outside the Walls, examining the stories, rituals, and architecture of this seventeen-hundred-year-old building (The Christian Science Monitor). In The Geometry of Love, acclaimed author Margaret Visser, the preeminent “anthropologist of everyday life,” takes on the living history of the ancient church of St. Agnes. Examining every facet of the building, from windows to catacombs, Visser takes readers on a mesmerizing tour of the old church, covering its social, political, religious, and architectural history. In so doing, she illuminates not only the church’s evolution but also its religious legacy in our modern lives. Written as an antidote to the usual dry and traditional studies of European churches, The Geometry of Love is infused with Visser’s unmatched warmth and wit, celebrating the remarkable ways that one building can reveal so much about our history and ourselves.

Book Virgin Martyrs

Download or read book Virgin Martyrs written by Michael J. K. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern times, the medieval stories of the saints have been either simply ignored or have been interpreted as colorful examples of cultural history, all the while ignoring their central character and initial purpose: Christ. But the legends and stories of the saints were always told within and around the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church. In other words, the saints were tools in preaching and promoting the Gospel of Christ. This clearly written book is a search for a way to read the medieval legends of the saints-- all saints--through the stories of the Virgin Martyrs, so that that their original and powerful stories speak to us once again. The stories of all the saints were written by people who were immersed in the Scriptures and who lived and breathed the words, images, ideas, symbols, poetry.

Download or read book Chastity Is for Lovers written by Arleen Spenceley and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2015 Catholic Press Award: Books for Teens and Young Adults (First Place). In 2012, journalist Arleen Spenceley outed herself as a twenty-six-year-old virgin in a Tampa Bay Times op-ed that went viral. In Chastity Is for Lovers, Spenceley expands on that piece, advocating Catholic teaching on sex and marriage with candor and humor, and without judgment. In her debut book, seasoned journalist and self-professed “happy virgin” Arleen Spenceley offers a mature, funny, and relatable vision of Catholic teaching on chastity for young adults. Chastity Is for Lovers provides perspective on a variety of topics—the difference between chastity and abstinence, how virginity is an affirming and valuable life choice, how the word “purity” can be harmful in ministry settings, how to date well, and why sexual self-control is the best form of marriage preparation—and gives single adults the best possible chance to find true love. She carefully avoids using language that shames readers and instead presents a view of chastity that is joyful and positive.

Book Against Jovinianus

  • Author : St. Jerome
  • Publisher : Dalcassian Publishing Company

  • ISBN : 1987022882
  • Pages : 97 pages

Download or read book Against Jovinianus written by St. Jerome and published by Dalcassian Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovinianus, about whom little more is known than what is to be found in Jerome's treatise, published a Latin treatise outlining several opinions: That a virgin is no better, as such, than a wife in the sight of God. Abstinence from food is no better than a thankful partaking of food. A person baptized with the Spirit as well as with water cannot sin. All sins are equal. There is but one grade of punishment and one of reward in the future state. In addition to this, he held the birth of Jesus Christ to have been by a "true parturition," and was thus refuting the orthodoxy of the time, according to which, the infant Jesus passed through the walls of the womb as his Resurrection body afterwards did, out of the tomb or through closed doors.

Book Liturgical Living Weekly Meal Planner

Download or read book Liturgical Living Weekly Meal Planner written by Kendra Tierney and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A year-long weekly meal planner based on the Catholic liturgical calendar and the liturgical living recommendations in the Catholic All Year Compendium, sure to make you a perfectly pious and oh-so organized cook. Or . . . maybe not. But this planner has been mindfully designed for busy moms and everyone who wants to focus a bit more on learning about the lives of the saints, the history and traditions of the Church, and bringing the people we love together around the table. The planner pages are undated. That means having a frozen pizza and leftovers week or going out of town doesn't mean "wasting" dated pages. Fill out the weeks as you go. Skip when you want to. Zero judgement from the planner. In the back you'll find all the feast days on the universal liturgical calendar, plus all the saints' days mentioned in the Catholic All Year Compendium. They are listed with a bit of information to inspire your meal planning-like a country or foods with which the saint or day is associated. Also included are lines to jot down your family members' three special days (birthday, nameday, and baptismal anniversary) and any other important recipes, holy days, holidays, and anniversaries you want to remember when meal planning. Write the month and dates of the upcoming week at the top of the page. Circle the liturgical season to get you in the mood. Then consult the lists in the back of the planner or on your Catholic All Year liturgical wall calendar to see if there are feast days you want to celebrate during the week or days of fasting or abstinence to remember and note them next to the day of the week. Decide on meals. Write them down. Fill out the shopping list. Tear it off when you're ready to head to the store. Easy peasy!
