Morgellons is a controversial medical condition characterized by fibers embedded in the skin. It has emerged online and is still being constructed as a valid disease. This paper seeks to examine the new media's role in creating the legitimate, regardless of whether or not the Morgellons phenomenon is a novel disease or delusion. New media has played an unprecedented role in the identification and development of this malady. However, to the dismay of those who seek to get the disease acknowledged by authorities, conspiracy culture and Morgellons narrative often overlap online. In particular, biological conspiracy theories resonate with the anxieties of a post-9/11 culture. Using the theories of Michel Foucault, Matthew Fuller and Manuel DeLanda, this paper explores the way narratives surrounding the illness are constructed through alternative channels and seeks to situate Morgellons in a social context. This paper also applies existing literature regarding conspiracy theory, rumor spread and network theory. Morgellons is a multi-casual phenomenon that represents the way diseases may be constructed in the future, as well as the way networks of information become legitimate.
