Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV), defined as physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse and controlling behaviors inflicted within intimate partner relationships, is a global crisis that extends beyond national and sociocultural boundaries, affecting people of all ages, religions, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. Though studies exist that seek to explain how people become trapped within violent relationships and what factors facilitate survival, escape and safety, this book provides fresh insights into this complex and multifaceted issue. People often ask of women in abusive relationships “why does she stay?” Critics suggest that this question carries implicit notions of victim blame and fails to hold to account the perpetrators of abuse. The studies described in this book, however, explore the question from the perspectives of survivors and represent a shift away from individual pathology to an approach based on the recognition of structural oppression, agency and resilience. Comprising eight chapters, new theoretical frameworks for the analysis of IPV are provided to guide practitioners and policy makers in improving services for vulnerable people in abusive relationships, and a range of studies into the experiences of a diverse range of survivors, including mothers in Portugal, women who experienced child marriage in Uganda, and refugees in the United States of America, generate findings which elucidate perspectives from marginalised and under-researched groups.

Mexican ethnopsychologists have been following this path for decades, since the pioneer work of Rogelio Díaz-Guerrero, but until now little has been published in English about this innovative theoretical approach. Se desarrolló una guía de preguntas abiertas a seguir durante la entrevista semi-estructurada grabada. El guía de preguntas consistió de un total de 22 preguntas dividas en (3) partes (Apéndice B). Se le leyó y se le entregó una hoja de consentimiento y confidencialidad (Apéndice A). A través de estas cinco entrevistas, se logró obtener la percepción y experiencia de estos profesionales de la salud que hayan trabajando e interviniendo con personas envejecidas sobrevivientes de maltrato. Se identificó la teoría de la actividad y satisfacción de la vida como el marco de referencia. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la gran necesidad que existe para sensibilizarnos y aumentar la educación del proceso de envejecimiento para poder identificar e intervenir en casos de maltrato de nuestra población envejecida. He llegado a la conclusión, que es urgente entender el proceso del envejecimiento, las necesidades y el valor de esta etapa de la vida. Dediquemos nuestro tiempo y esfuerzo para compartir nuestra atención, cariño y afecto con nuestros envejecidos que tanto ellos también dieron y aportaron en nuestra crianza y desarrollo.

Although intimate partner violence, risk and security are intimately connected they are rarely considered in tandem in the context of global security. Yet, intimate partner violence causes widespread physical, sexual and/or psychological harm. It is the most common type of violence against women internationally and is estimated to affect 30 per cent of women worldwide. Intimate partner violence has received significant attention in recent years, animating political debate, policy and law reform as well as scholarly attention. In bringing together a range of international experts, this edited collection challenges status quo understandings of risk and questions how we can reposition the risk of IPV, and particularly the risk of IPH, as a critical site of global and national security. It brings together contributions from a range of disciplines and international jurisdictions, including from Australia and New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe, United States, North America, Brazil and South Africa. The contributions here urge us to think about perpetrators in more nuanced and sophisticated ways with chapters pointing to the structural and social factors that facilitate and sustain violence against women and IPV. Contributors point out that states not only exacerbate the structural conditions producing the risks of violence, but directly coerce and control women as both citizens and non-citizens. States too should be understood as collaborators and facilitators of intimate partner violence. Effective action against intimate partner violence requires sustained responses at the global, state and local levels to end gender inequality. Critical to this end are environmental issues, poverty and the divisions, often along ‘race’ and ethnic lines, underpinning other dimensions of social and economic inequality.
