Book India s Fragile Borderlands

Download or read book India s Fragile Borderlands written by Archana Upadhyay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a danger in the West of viewing terrorism exclusively through the prism of 9/11. This ground-breaking examination of terrorism in North East India demonstrates how grave a mistake this is. The nature of terrorism is the subject of ever-increasing scrutiny and there are many lessons to be learned from India's borderlands. Terrorism, fostered at first by post-colonial resentments, took root in the region because of an increased sense of cultural identity and perceived discrimination and exclusion by the Indian state. This book examines the long term effects of terrorism on the population of North East India - where the best-known conflict is the Naga tribe's ongoing campaign for a greater Nagaland - as well as its international consequences. "India's Fragile Borderlands" offers a comprehensive study of the nature, origins and history of terrorism in India's North East within an international perspective. Sharing borders with China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar (Burma) and Bhutan, the region abounds in nationalist, separatist and even religious organizations that have used terrorism as a strategy to achieve their aims. Archana Upadhyay explores the complex and specific ideologies of these groups while highlighting the cross-border links and connections with organized crime that funds the violence in the region. This important new book includes many insights into the nature of terrorism in India's northeastern frontiers and will be invaluable for students of politics, history and International Relations.

Book Conflicts in the Northeast

Download or read book Conflicts in the Northeast written by V R Raghavan and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast India comprises of seven states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. This region has been the theatre of insurgency and ethnic-based armed conflicts for more than half a century making the region one of South Asia’s most disturbed areas. The instability in Northeast India is characterized by two distinct factors – ethnic clashes among the indigenous groups and political movement against the Union Government. The conflicting dynamics in the Northeast ranges from insurgency for secession to insurgency for autonomy, from terrorism to ethnic clashes, to problems of continuous inflow of migrants and the fight over resources. Moreover, vested interests and inter tribal and inter factional rivalry have led militant groups to continually clash among themselves, plunging the region in a vicious cycle of militancy, social violence and lack of economic growth. These armed conflicts have given impetus to small arms proliferation, narcotics trade and a parallel economy. The democratic deficits and how the Central Government and the states have addressed these concerns are of interest. The location of the region, politically and geographically, has a fundamental bearing on it and its people who aspire for different goals and how they try to reach these goals. The region shares borders with four countries: Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Tibet/China and is connected to the Indian mainland by a narrow stretch of land. This adds to the trans – border ramifications to the conflicts. To address these issues CSA with the help of Centre for Northeast Studies and Policy Research, Guwahati engaged a few experts who have contributed papers which were presented at the Seminar in New Delhi in July 2010 and the same stand published through this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The media have a special relationship with conflict situations, external or internal which has been an integral part of the history of a country as well as the world. Northeast India has been beset with insurgencies for more than half-a-century. The Nagas rebelled in the early 1950s and since then insurgency in some form or the other has spread to all the states of the northeast, popularly known as seven sisters. While insurgency in the northeast India is taking a toll of the law and order, peace, stability, progress and foreign relations; it is also causing irreparable harm to the press, the developments and the decision making process in administration. So, should it be the media’s mission to promote peace, democracy and growth in this region? This edited volume contains ten essays written by prominent media persons with first-hand experience of reporting on conflicts in northeast India. It provides the broad range of factors including the manner in which media operates and their relationship to the various ethnic conflicts in the region. This book is perhaps the first of its kind which explored many possibilities how to restore peace and public’s confidence in the region by engaging media as facilitator in the process.

Book Insurgency in India s Northeast

Download or read book Insurgency in India s Northeast written by Jugdep Chima and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insurgency in India’s Northeast provides a systematic analysis of every major secessionist group and insurgency in the region within a unified and original explanatory framework, focusing primarily on the postcolonial period. This book presents a parsimonious analytic narrative involving a rich sequential account of the historical evolution of Mizo, Naga, Meitei, and "ethnic Assamese" identities from precolonial to colonial to postcolonial times. Avoiding essentialist or primordialist arguments, the chapters in the book demonstrate how ethnic/(sub)national identities are dynamic and malleable phenomenon, not immutable natural givens. In particular, it argues that the postcolonial Indian state has attempted to integrate these ethnic/sub-state national groups into the Indian Union through a combination of democratic accommodation/consociationalism and hegemonic/violent control, strategically designed to encapsulate their evolving (sub) national identities into the overarching state-sponsored Indian nationality. Through this book, readers will gain a rich understanding of the dynamics of ethnicity/ nationality and the nation/state-building process in postcolonial India. It will be of interest to researchers in the fields of Asian studies, ethnicity, nationalism, separatism, security studies, border studies, and international relations.

Book Emergent North East A Way Forward

Download or read book Emergent North East A Way Forward written by H. C. Sadangi and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethnic mosaic of North-East India offers a fascinating area of academic discourse which needs to be examined for a clear understanding of the elements of separatism or integration which necessarily carry socio-political ramifications. It attempts to assess the contours of ethno-cultural plurality in the social dynamics of the region as well as about its history, geography, economic and concurrent political scenario fogging with insurgency and terrorism. To be more precise, it deals with the land, the people, history, economy, cultural heritage, ethnical composition, with a socio-political relevance of each state of the North-East India. The present book should be of interest to students, scholars, journalists and policy makers interested in the study of ethnic conflicts, politics, insurgency and identity politics. It should be an indispensable reference tool for students of Political Science, Sociology, History and Anthropology.

Book Terrorism In India S North East A Gathering Storm

Download or read book Terrorism In India S North East A Gathering Storm written by Col Ved Prakash and published by . This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 1059 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study of terrorism in India s North-East is the result of the author s personal experience of combating terrorism in the Naga hills and the Mizo Hills during his extended tenures in the area, followed by long years of secondary research after his retirement. It is to be noted that the terrorism in the North-East is of older vintage as compared to its counterpart in Jammu and Kashmir. Not only the present situation/terrorism and counter terrorism in each of the Seven states popularly known Seven Sisters has been discussed but their historical perspective too has been gone into in detail. Ironically, the insurgency-terrorism in the North-East can be linked to India s Independence. In the first flush of glow of the Freedom, every tribe got conscious of their identity and wanted to vigorously preserve it. Most of the tribes wanted a place in the sun through secessionist, or the very least, autonomy movements, which became violent in the course of time. Dealing with the terrorism in the North-East is not an easy proposition, given its diversity (ethnic, racial, religious and linguistic), size, history and geography. If India is a microcosmic world, the North-East is microcosmic India. Of the 5, 653 communities in India, 653 are tribal of which 213 are indigenous to the North-East. Democratic India has shown maximum possible accommodation to tribal communities. But it has not been easy dealing with them. Even issues settled decades back threaten to come unstuck. Two apt examples will do. After long and sustained struggle, the Khasis and Garos got Meghalaya, a state of their own and now the Garos want Garoland to be carved out of this small state. Again, the smaller tribes in Mizoram want a Union Territory (UT) of their own within that State. It is no secret that a UT is but penultimate stage on way to demand for a full-fledged state of the Union. All this shows the problems of dealing with terrorism in the North-East. All these have been comprehensively covered in the book. Being the first of its kind, given its wide-ranging contents and sheer size, it is a unique, multi-volume book to hit the market.

Book Northeast India

Download or read book Northeast India written by Ramashray Roy and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast India: Development, Communalism, and Insurgency represents a pioneer effort in understanding the linkage among the phenomena of development, communalism, and insurgency. Heretofore insurgency has been viewed as pathology of body politic, a prime instance of the breakdown of law and order and a challenge to the legitimate centralized political authority. The present book argues against this partisan view and underlines the fact that to treat it as a problem of law and order is to turn a blind eye to the causes which, when ignored for long, lead to political violence and insurgency. The cause of insurgency lies in the frustrated aspirations of the people with distinct socio-cultural identities by tardy development; this paves the way for the politicization of traditional socio-cultural referents of identity-formation; this, in turn, paves the way for intense political agitation which eventually graduates into political violence and insurgency if the smouldering discontent is not pacified. The root of insurgency lies in unsatisfied political demands that are considered by the agitators as Iegitimate. This is the causal path that Development, Communalism and Insurgency traces in the Northeast, although the theoretical paradigm developed in this study has universal applicability. While developing this theoretical paradigm, the book also focuses on some important aspects of political life and relations in Assam and Meghalaya, the two foci of this study, and probes into the subjective world of the people in these two states. The combination of these dimensions, the theoretical and the pragmatic has made this study a landmark in the study of the linkage among development, communalism, and insurgency.

During the workshop, Indian and U.S. experts examined the terrorist threat faced in both countries and elsewhere in the world, and explored opportunities for the U.S. and India to work together. Bringing together scientists and experts with common scientific and technical backgrounds from different cultures provided a unique opportunity to explore possible means of preventing or mitigating future terrorist attacks.
