Book Oaths and Vows

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adam B Seligman
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2024-08-19
  • ISBN : 3111324575
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Oaths and Vows written by Adam B Seligman and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oaths, vows, promises, curses - all share family resemblances. They are performatives, carrying illocutionary force. Oaths have rightly been termed, "conditional self-curses", promises have been argued to be but a more developed form of vows, and oaths and vows are often used interchangeably. This book focuses on private vows and oaths including those publically proclaimed. Through analysis of legal, liturgical, mythical and literary works, it seeks to uncover a phenomenology of oaths and vows. Viewing oaths and vows as the human creative force par excellence, it surveys their role in circumscribing and directing both erotic desire and aggression; and so - in their performative function - as standing at the foundation of society and sociability. As acts of trust which establish new obligations understandings of the role of oaths and vows are compared in the Jewish and Christian contexts, in terms of the importance of intentionality in vow making and oath taking, as well as the nature of the obligations ensuing from such locutionary acts. Analysis of the comic and tragic consequences of the violation of marriage oaths as presented in European literature from the 12th to 19th centuries reveals their perception as "habituating" Eros.

Book Twelfth Night or What You Will The Oxford Shakespeare

Download or read book Twelfth Night or What You Will The Oxford Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelfth Night is one of the most popular of Shakespeare's plays in the modern theatre, and this edition places particular emphasis on its theatrical qualities throughout. Peopled with lovers misled either by disguises or their own natures, it combines lyrical melancholy with broad comedy. The introduction analyses its many views of love and the juxtaposition of joy and melancholy, while the detailed commentary pays particular attention to its linguistic subtleties. Music is particularly important in Twelfth Night, and this is the only modern edition to offer material for all the music required in a performance. James Walker has re-edited the existing music from the original sources, and where noe exists has composed settings compatible with the surviving originals. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book The Life of the Vows

  • Author : Thomas Merton
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 2012-09-01
  • ISBN : 087907793X

Download or read book The Life of the Vows written by Thomas Merton and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As novice master of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky, Thomas Merton presented weekly conferences to familiarize his charges with the meaning and purpose of the vows they aspired to undertake. In this setting, he offered a thorough exposition of the theological, canonical, and above all spiritual dimensions of the vows. Merton set the vows firmly in the context of the anthropological, moral, soteriological, and ecclesial dimensions of human, Christian, and monastic life. He addressed such classical themes of Christian morality as the nature of the human person and his acts; the importance of justice in relation to the Passion of Christ, to friendship and to love; and self-surrender as the key to grace, prayer and the vowed life. Merton's words on these topics clearly spring from a committed heart and often flow with the soaring intensity of style that we have come to expect in his more enthusiastic prose. The texts of these conferences represent the longest and most systematically organized of any of numerous series of conferences that Merton presented during the decade of his mastership. They may be the most directly pastoral work Merton ever wrote.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The soul is beyond the human frame of reference; that is, beyond the limits of the human experience and human understanding.” Something is wrong with human existence. Do we acknowledge it? To some, the evidence is all around us, demanding our attention. Can we really change? Yes, we can. Can we really change the human experience? Yes, we can, but to do so we must change our point of existence, our frame of reference. We must learn to see with different eyes. The ills of this world have their source within each one of us, and so it is within each one of us that the source of the world's ills must be dealt with. And we can start by acknowledging the existence of the soul, the higher-dimensional Self, that powerful and extraordinarily beautiful spark of divinity that exists within each one of us. The Messiah Perspective is a series of dialogues, each one of which is set within the context of a story for palatability, and each of which contains the truth of human existence as I see it: human psychology and spirituality, human nature, and human reality. Furthermore, these dialogues are the path I have trodden as I cut a swathe through the layers of programming, harmful beliefs, learned behaviours, and the lower-dimensional perspectives and mindsets that currently characterise human existence. These dialogues are the path I have walked to transform my own perspective, to see with different eyes, and to set free the radiance of my own soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to analyze why certain moments in Shakespear's play give more pleasure than others. Too often, according to the author, literary criticism filters out pleasure in the pursuit of meaning, reducing poems to their lowest common denominator. He would rather analyze delight by replacing the modern emphasis upon interpretation with a kind of critical hedonism--the study of drama as a superior amusement.
