Book excerpt: VINYL MAY BE FINAL NAIL IN CD’S COFFIN ran the headline in a Wired magazine article in October 2007. Ever since the arrival of the long—playing record in 1948, the album has acted as the soundtrack to our lives. Record collections—even on a CD or iPod-are personal treasures, revealing our loves, errors in judgment, and lapses in taste. In The Vinyl Countdown, Travis Elborough explores the way in which particular albums are deeply embedded in cultural history or so ubiquitous as to be almost invisible. While music itself has experienced several different movements over the past sixty years, the album has remained a constant. But the way we listen to music has changed in the last ten years. In the age of the iPod, when we can download an infinite number of single tracks instantaneously, does the concept of the album mean anything? Elborough moves chronologically through relevant periods, letting the story of the LP, certain genres, youth cults, and topics like sleeve designs, shops, drugs, and education unfurl as he goes along. The Vinyl Countdown is a brilliant piece of popular history, an idiosyncratic tribute to a much-loved part of our shared consciousness, and a celebration of the joy of records.

Book Radio s Second Century

Download or read book Radio s Second Century written by John Allen Hendricks and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 Broadcast Education Association Book Award One of the first books to examine the status of broadcasting on its one hundredth anniversary, Radio’s Second Century investigates both vanguard and perennial topics relevant to radio’s past, present, and future. As the radio industry enters its second century of existence, it continues to be a dominant mass medium with almost total listenership saturation despite rapid technological advancements that provide alternatives for consumers. Lasting influences such as on-air personalities, audience behavior, fan relationships, and localism are analyzed as well as contemporary issues including social and digital media. Other essays examine the regulatory concerns that continue to exist for public radio, commercial radio, and community radio, and discuss the hindrances and challenges posed by government regulation with an emphasis on both American and international perspectives. Radio’s impact on cultural hegemony through creative programming content in the areas of religion, ethnic inclusivity, and gender parity is also explored. Taken together, this volume compromises a meaningful insight into the broadcast industry’s continuing power to inform and entertain listeners around the world via its oldest mass medium--radio.

Book Technologies related to electronic music production

Download or read book Technologies related to electronic music production written by Aaron Sequeira and published by Smart Audio IL Mexico SAS de CV. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We will focus on the most outstanding technologies for modern electronic music production. Therefore, as in the previous book in which sections made the presentation of the instruments, this volume is made up of five of them for reasons of analytical practicality: 1. Audio recording and playback 2. Speakers 3. Communication protocols between electronic instruments 4. Modern electronic music production 5. DJing The first point will clarify how the ability to record sound in an analog mechanism was acquired just a moment ago if we compare that time with human existence. Therefore, since electronic music is intrinsically linked to the technique of sound recording and its playback, it is necessary to know about the technologies that have allowed this process since the 19th century. Subsequently, it will be explained what the speakers are and how their role and development in electronic music have been fundamental. As has already been elucidated throughout this series, it would be practically impossible for electronic music to exist without speakers. After that, we’ll see the two main protocols of communication between electronic instruments: MIDI and OSC, in addition to expressing my point of view about their transcendence because never, in the history of music in its entirety, the instruments had managed to sync through messages and time automation codes, under the master/ slave concept. Understanding the above, we will review all those technologies that facilitate modern electronic music production, such as a DAW, sound effects, sample manipulation, etc. Finally, we will explain the tools that the DJ uses to play, such as turntables, CD players, controllers, etc. Since each invention of these five points has its own story, I will limit myself to mentioning merely basic details so that the reader can investigate more for his account, topic by topic. As in the case of this series’ first and second volumes, the purpose is to establish a conceptual axis in which one can have a reference, not a detailed encyclopedia of each specific device.

Book Broadway to Main Street

Download or read book Broadway to Main Street written by Laurence Maslon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of Broadway is one of America's most unique and popular calling cards. In Broadway to Main Street: How Show Tunes Enchanted America, author Laurence Maslon tells the story of how the most beloved songs of the American Musical Theater made their way from the Theater District to living rooms across the country. The crossroads where the music of Broadway meets popular culture is an expansive and pervasive juncture throughout most of the twentieth century--from sheet music to radio broadcasts to popular and original cast recordings--and continues to influence culture today through television, streaming, and the Internet. The original Broadway cast album--from the 78 rpm recording of Oklahoma! to the digital download of Hamilton--is one of the most successful, yet undervalued, genres in the history of popular recording. The challenge of capturing musical narrative with limited technology inspired the imagination of both the recording industry and millions of listeners: between 1949 and 1969, fifteen different original cast albums hit number one on the popular music charts, ultimately tallying more weeks at number one than all of the albums by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles combined. The history of Broadway music is also the history of American popular music; the technological, commercial, and marketing forces of communications and media over the last century were inextricably bound up in the enterprise of bringing the musical gems of New York's Theater District to living rooms along Main Streets across the nation. Featuring new interviews with Stephen Schwartz, Chita Rivera, Steve Lawrence, and prominent record producers and music critics, the story of this commercial and emotional phenomenon is told here in full--from the imprimatur of sheet music from Broadway in the early 20th century to the renaissance of Broadway music in the digital age, folding in the immense impact of show music on American culture and in the context of the recording industry, popular tastes, and our shared national identity. A book which connects cherished cultural artifacts to the emotional narratives at the core of American popular music, Broadway to Main Street: How Show Tunes Enchanted America is an ideal companion for all fans of American musical theater and popular music.

Book Media and Performance in the Musical

Download or read book Media and Performance in the Musical written by Raymond Knapp and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past several years, the American musical has continued to thrive by reflecting and shaping cultural values and social norms, and even commenting on politics, whether directly and on a national scale (Hamilton) or somewhat more obliquely and on a more intimate scale (Fun Home). New stage musicals, such as Come from Away and The Band's Visit, open on Broadway every season, challenging conventions of form and content, and revivals offer audiences a different perspective on extant shows (Carousel; My Fair Lady). Television musicals broadcast live hearken back to 1950s television's affection for musical theatre and aim to attract new audiences through the accessibility of television. Film musicals, including Les Misérables and Into the Woods, capitalize on the medium's technical capabilities of perspective and point of view, as well as visual spectacle. Television has embraced the genre anew, and with unexpected gusto, not only devising musical episodes for countless dramatic and comedy series, but also generating musical series such as Galavant and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. And animated musicals, such as Disney's Moana, hail child and adult audiences with their dual messages, vibrant visual vocabulary, and hummable music. The chapters gathered in this book, Volume II of the reissued Oxford Handbook, explore the American musical from the various media in which musicals have been created to the different components of a musical and the people who do the work to bring a musical to life.

Book I Hate Old Music Too

Download or read book I Hate Old Music Too written by Dave Thompson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgy, witty, and opinionated critical analysis of “classic rock” in the 21st century, discussing everything from modern remixes of classic albums (why?) to concert ticket prices, Record Store Day, the vinyl revival, milking deceased artists, reunions, tribute acts, and more. When Dave Thompson’s I Hate New Music: The Classic Rock Manifesto in 2008, the book did not so much divide the world of rock reading as leave it in an uproar. It started arguments, it ended debates, and for the author of over 150 music books, it not only received the strongest reader response of any book he’d written, it also still crops up in author interviews today. Almost fifteen years later, however, much has changed, and the classics have lost some of their bite as well. In I Hate Old Music, Too, Thompson recasts the story of “classic rock” in the 21st century. Among the targets of his ire are lavish box sets that mostly just duplicate the albums you already own; comebacks and reunions featuring half or even fewer of the band members; the dark side of the “vinyl revival;” the continued cult of The Beatles; and much more.
