Download or read book Grand Rapids in Vintage Postcards 1890 1940 written by Thomas R. Dilley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand Rapids, Michigan, began to take shape when settlers found power, transportation, and abundant natural resources on the banks of the Grand River. A gateway to the settlement of western and northern Michigan in the mid- to late 19th century, Grand Rapids became home to a fledgling cottage industry in the manufacture of furniture. In the decades that followed, the furniture industry brought employment and prosperity to the city, and significantly influenced its physical landscape and character. The history of Grand Rapids during the late 19th and early 20th centuries has been documented in the postcards of the period. Hundreds of scenes of buildings and institutions, and the people who lived, worked, and played here were recorded on these cards.

Book Grand Rapids in Stereographs

Download or read book Grand Rapids in Stereographs written by Thomas R. Dilley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning around 1865, as the fledgling art and science of photography began to appear in cities and towns across the United States, a small group of photographers, using new methods and equipment developed a few years before in Europe, began producing and offering for sale stereographic views of the people, places, and events that made up daily life in the then nearly 40-year-old city of Grand Rapids. These photographic views were unlike others that had preceded them and when viewed using a special device, they presented a detailed, three-dimensional portrait of the young city. Once introduced, stereographic views of the city, alongside those of more distant lands, became wildly popular and soon graced the homes of many in this city and elsewhere. The stereographic cards themselves today offer a rare and detailed glimpse of the city, its residents, and some of the special and unusual events that occurred nearly 150 years ago.

Book excerpt: William Haldane opened a cabinet shop in 1836, 14 years before Grand Rapids incorporated. Other furniture companies followed: Berkey and Gay, Widdicomb, Sligh, Hekman, and Phoenix were among those taking advantage of the Grand River for transportation and power, the area's abundant hardwood supply, and a growing immigrant labor pool. The furniture soon attracted national attention. In 1876, the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition proved conclusively that a river town in Michigan had indeed earned the title "Furniture City." Presidents Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower all worked at Grand Rapids-made desks. Fifteen manufacturers joined forces to build 1,000 Handley Page bombers during World War I. The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, at a table made in Grand Rapids. Despite fires, floods, strikes, depressions, and wars, Grand Rapids led the industry until the 1950s and 1960s, when the factories began moving to North Carolina. Today the area, along with nearby Holland and Zeeland, dominates the office furniture industry.

Book God Now

Download or read book God Now written by C. Fred Alford and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these short, accessible essays, Alford writes about the personal "Why I Pray," as well as the political "Simone Weil and Donald Trump." He makes some difficult theologians, such as Karl Barth and Soren Kierkegaard, accessible, while not hesitating to criticize them. Alford argues the genius of Christianity is in God making himself vulnerable so as to know what it is to be human; otherwise, God stands at a terrible distance from humanity. From this perspective, Christianity is about the teachings of Christ, and God's willingness to suffer. The resurrection, so central to most Christians, becomes less important. Myriad religious thinkers are considered, including Albert Camus, Thomas Merton, Reinhold Niebuhr, Rudolf Bultmann, and Paul Tillich, among others, including Simone Weil. Also addressed is the relationship between religion and psychology, as well as the status of natural law. Notable is the author's attitude, which combines respect for great thinkers and a willingness to call them out as wrong, confused, or misguided. Unafraid of atheism, Alford thinks many of the so-called new atheists judge religion as though it were a science, a confusion of categories. Once a philosopher of science, he knows the scope and limits of scientific explanation better than most.

Download or read book Not Just Science written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that it is possible for our study of the natural world to enhance our understanding of God and for our faith to inform and influence our study and application of science. Whether you are a student, someone employed in the sciences, or simply an interested layperson, Not Just Science will help you develop the crucial skills of critical thinking and reflection about key questions in Christian faith and natural science. The contributors provide a systematic approach to both raising and answering the key questions that emerge at the intersection of faith and various disciplines in the natural sciences. Among the questions addressed are the context, limits, benefits, and practice of science in light of Christian values. Questions of ethics as they relate to various applied sciences are also discussed. The end goal is an informed biblical worldview on both nature and our role in obeying God’s mandate to care for his creation. With an honest approach to critical questions, Not Just Science fills a gap in the discussion about the relationship between faith and reason. This is a most welcomed addition to these significant scholarly conversations. Ron Mahurin, PhD Vice President, Professional Development and Research Council for Christian Colleges & Universities
