Book excerpt: My research explores the potential of Colorado as a wine region. USA Today recently named Grand Junction, Colorado, one of the "10 great places for local wines," noting that "the regional wine movement has blossomed, thanks to better farming techniques and a growing interest in locally sourced products." However, just as wine connects numerous disciplines--agriculture, economics, geography, art, and history--I also use wine as a tool to connect larger, complex threads such as the philosophy of authenticity, environmental ethics, the intrinsic value of diversity, and knowing the origin of a product. Richard Nunamaker is one of many grape growers who has left a successful career to pursue a passion that some might say is crazy. At an elevation at 6,200 feet, his land in Cedaredge, Colorado, is one of the highest altitude vineyards in North America. Through an in-depth profile of Nunamaker and other growers and winemakers in Colorado, I seek to chronicle the growth of the Colorado wine industry as a lens into these emerging phenomena in modern culture.
