Book excerpt: “Italy is a beautiful but complicated place, not so much a country as a collection of cultures and cuisines. Matt Goulding expertly navigates it’s wonders and eccentricities with wisdom and great passion.” -Anthony Bourdain "Goulding is pioneering a new type of writing about food." -Financial Times This is not a cookbook. This is something more: a travelogue, a patient investigation of Italy’s cuisine, a loving profile of the everyday heroes who bring Italy to the table. Pasta, Pane, Vino is the latest edition of the genre-bending Roads & Kingdoms style pioneered under Anthony Bourdain’s imprint in Rice, Noodle, Fish ( 2016 Travel Book of the Year, Society of American Travel Writers ) and Grape, Olive, Pig ( 2017 IACP Award, Literary Food Writing). Town by town, bite by bite, author Matt Goulding brings Italy to life through intimate portraits of its food culture and the people pushing it in new directions: Three globe-trotting brothers who became the mozzarella kings of Puglia; the pizza police of Naples and the innovative pies that stay one step ahead of the rules; the Barolo Boys who turned the hilly Piedmont into one of the world’s great wine regions. Goulding’s writing has never been better, in complete harmony with the book's innovative design and the more than 200 lush color photographs that introduce the chefs, shepherds, fisherman, farmers, grandmas, and guardians who power this country’s extraordinary culinary traditions. From the pasta temples of Rome to the multicultural markets of Sicily to the family-run, fish-driven trattorias of Lake Como, Pasta, Pane, Vino captures the breathtaking diversity of Italian regional food culture.

Book excerpt: The “engrossing” (Wall Street Journal) story of the biggest con in wine history In 2002, Rudy Kurniawan, an unknown twentysomething, burst into the privileged world of ultrafine wines. Blessed with a virtuoso palate, and with a seemingly limitless supply of coveted bottles, Kurniawan quickly became the leading purveyor of rare wines to the American elite. But in April 2008, at a New York auction house, dozens of Kurniawan's trophy bottles were abruptly pulled from sale. Journalist Peter Hellman was there, and he began to investigate: Were the bottles fake? Were there others? And was Kurniawan himself a dupe . . . or had he ensnared the world's top winemakers, sellers, and drinks in a web of deceit?

Book Vino Business

Download or read book Vino Business written by Isabelle Saporta and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This sharp critique of French winemakers, and Bordeaux’s Saint Emilion region in particular, caused quite a stir when it was published in France in 2014” (Publishers Weekly). Already provoking debate and garnering significant attention across France and within the wine world, Vino Business is a “truly eye-opening exposé” of the dark side of French wine by acclaimed investigative journalist Isabelle Saporta (Booklist). In recent decades, Bordeaux has come under the influence of large-scale international investors. Unafraid to name names, Saporta sheds a harsh light on how this influence has corrupted the region’s centuries-old traditions of winemaking excellence. She uncovers how the classification system was manipulated in 2012 to ensure that the wines of Saint-Émilion—Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellation—were certified premier grand cru classé A. Giving extra points to a chateaux for the size of its parking lot, the quality of the wine itself counts for only thirty percent of that coveted rank. In other chapters, Saporta investigates issues of wine labeling and pesticides, and draws comparisons to Champagne, Burgundy, and the rest of the wine world. “This fast-paced, provocative read” is a cri de coeur for the lost values of traditional winemaking (Dave DeSimone, Pittsburgh Tribune Review).

Book excerpt: ¡Vino! explores the history and identity of Spanish wine production from the mid-nineteenth century to today. Nineteenth-century infestations of oidium fungus and phylloxera aphids devastated French and Italian vineyards but didn’t extend to the Iberian Peninsula at first, giving Spanish vintners the opportunity to increase their international sales. Once French and Italian wineries rebounded, however, Spanish wine producers had to up their game. Spain could not produce only table wine; it needed a quality product to compete with the supposedly superior French wines. After the Spanish Civil War the totalitarian Franco regime turned its attention to Spain’s devastated agricultural sector, but the country’s wine industry did not rebound until well after World War II. In the postwar years, it rebranded itself to compete in a more integrated European and international marketplace with the creation of a new wine identity. As European integration continued, Spanish wine producers and the tourism industry worked together to promote the uniqueness of Spain and the quality of its wines. Karl J. Trybus explores the development of Spanish wine in the context of national and global events, tracing how the wine industry has fared and ultimately prospered despite civil war, regional concerns, foreign problems, and changing tastes.

In BEL VINO Isabella takes the reader on a winding journey to discover the true aristocratic orgins of the world-renowned wine Brunello di Montalcino on whose vintage the fortunes of many of the Montalcinesi depend. Taking us through the seasons of the wine harvest, Dusi weaves a path that brings in the local white-hooded monks who have lived in the Abbey of Sant' Antimo since at least 814; the last remaining local shoemaker; the harvesting of mushrooms, olives and truffles; an archery contest with a local village at which passions run high; and the fight to save a 1000-year-old church with no foundations. As an insider, Dusi is able to portray Tuscan life with all its idyllic charms whilst also giving an intriguing insight into the daily workings of the ancient village of Montalcino.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Courage isn't just overcoming your fears, being determined in the way you do things, willpower. As I see it, courage, unless it's accompanied by the ability to be analytical, to undertake a careful study of the scenario and possess a good deal of stubbornness, then that just isn't courage. Courage requires respect, that is, a sense of civic consciousness, meaning the willingness to live in harmony with nature and people. Courage requires a sense of responsibility: to do and to answer for what you do. A community of people who refuse to be responsible is destined to failure. Courage requires friendship. It's easier to find the courage to face a project when your true friends are there with you. Courage requires goodness: being good means being fair. Wickedness is always unfair, and when coupled with courage, it's the most destructive combination possible in the life of an individual or a community. Courage requires math: knowing numbers is of fundamental importance. Numbers are absolutely the most accurate indicator of the state of things. Courage requires a balanced combination of honesty and cleverness. These two things must always coexist. Courage requires pride: in what you represent, pride for the land, the factory, your job, even if it's humble, your family, homeland, history. Courage requires optimism, which means thinking that there's a solution to everything and enjoying what you have. Courage doesn't necessarily mean growing in quantity, but it always mean growing in quality. Lastly, courage requires a conscience: the music of the soul that enables you to tell good from bad, that shows you the way forward. Don't expect amazing stories and awesome feats in what we tell you here. There's lightness and harmony in the winemakers I've interviewed. There's family, commitment, future, but also the past, love, Italy, the world, politics, and there's hope. Above all there's lots of courage." Conversations with Costantino Charrère o Angelo Gaja o Beppe Rinaldi o Walter Massa o Marilisa Allegrini o Josko Gravner o Piero Antinori o Niccolo` Incisa della Rocchetta o Ampelio Bucci o Teresa Severini and Chiara Lungarotti o José Rallo o Francesca and Alessio Planeta
