Book Historical Dictionary of Surrealism

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Surrealism written by Keith Aspley and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite surrealism's celebration of the subconscious and eschewal of reason, the movement was nevertheless concerned with definitions. Andre Breton included a dictionary-style entry for surrealisme in his 1924 Manifeste du surrealisme and later explored juxtapositions of the absurd and the mundane in the 1938 Dictionnaire abrege du surrealisme. To the mountain of literature that seeks to organize the far-reaching intellectual movement, Aspley (honorary fellow, Univ. of Edinburgh) adds this handy volume that organizes the breadth of surrealism into concise entries on artists, writers, artworks, and themes. A chronology highlights events that sparked the surrealist imagination, activities of formal surrealist groups, and exhibitions. An introductory essay and extensive bibliography are included. One of the few English-language reference sources about surrealism published in the last decade, Aspley's dictionary is useful for quick access to key terms and biographies. For a book devoted to a movement characterized by arresting visual imagery, the lack of illustrations is annoying. Even Rene Passeron's 1978 Phaidon Encyclopedia of Surrealism (CH, May'79) reprints artworks in color. For a richly illustrated and comprehensive history, see Gerard Durozi's History of the Surrealist Movement (CH, Nov'02, 40-1316). Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through graduate students. Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students. Reviewed by A. H. Simmons.

Book L ART AU XXe SI CLE ET L UTOPIE

Download or read book L ART AU XXe SI CLE ET L UTOPIE written by and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Pissarro Neo Impressionism and the Spaces of the Avant Garde

Download or read book Pissarro Neo Impressionism and the Spaces of the Avant Garde written by Martha Ward and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martha Ward tracks the development and reception of neo-impressionism, revealing how the artists and critics of the French art world of the 1880s and 1890s created painting's first modern vanguard movement. Paying particular attention to the participation of Camille Pissarro, the only older artist to join the otherwise youthful movement, Ward sets the neo-impressionists' individual achievements in the context of a generational struggle to redefine the purposes of painting. She describes the conditions of display, distribution, and interpretation that the neo-impressionists challenged, and explains how these artists sought to circulate their own work outside of the prevailing system. Paintings, Ward argues, often anticipate and respond to their own conditions of display and use, and in the case of the neo-impressionists, the artists' relations to market forces and exhibition spaces had a decisive impact on their art. Ward details the changes in art dealing, and chronicles how these and new freedoms for the press made artistic vanguardism possible while at the same time affecting the content of painting. She also provides a nuanced account of the neo-impressionists' engagements with anarchism, and traces the gradual undermining of any strong correlation between artistic allegiance and political direction in the art world of the 1890s. Throughout, there are sensitive discussions of such artists as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, as well as Pissarro. Yet the touchstone of the book is Pissarro's intricate relationship to the various factions of the Paris art world.

Book Kazimir Malevich

  • Author : Rainer Crone
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books

  • ISBN : 9780948462818
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Kazimir Malevich written by Rainer Crone and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malevich's sudden and startling realization of a non-objective way of painting – which he termed Suprematism – stands as a seminal moment in the history of twentieth-century art. Rainer Crone and David Moos trace the artist's development from his beginnings in the Ukraine and early years in Moscow – where he was closely involved in the Futurist circle – through to the late 1920s and beyond. The authors of this book convincingly demonstrate that it is only through a close and sustained reading of Malevich's late – and still widely misunderstood – painterly oeuvre that his extraordinarily inventive stance can truly be comprehended. Crone and Moos trace the close relationship between Malevich's practice and other contemporary non-political revolutions in physics, linguistics and poetry. They present Malevich as a uniquely creative artist, embodying in his work many of the insights and discoveries that define the twentieth century and the condition of modern life.

Book Fred Forest s Utopia

Download or read book Fred Forest s Utopia written by Michael F. Leruth and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “France's most famous unknown artist,” the innovative media provocateur Fred Forest, precursor of Eduardo Kac, Jodi, the Yes Men, RT Mark, and the Guerilla Girls. The innovative French media artist and prankster-provocateur Fred Forest first gained notoriety in 1972 when he inserted a small blank space in Le Monde, called it 150 cm2 of Newspaper (150 cm2 de papier journal), and invited readers to fill in the space with their own work and mail their efforts to him. In 1977, he satirized speculation in both the art and real estate markets by offering the first parcel of officially registered “artistic square meters” of undeveloped rural land for sale at an art auction. Although praised by leading media theorists—Vilém Flusser lauded Forest as “the artist who pokes holes in media”—Forest's work has been largely ignored by the canon-making authorities. Forest calls himself “France's most famous unknown artist.” In this book, Michael Leruth offers the first book-length consideration of this iconoclastic artist, examining Forest's work from the 1960s to the present. Leruth shows that Forest chooses alternative platforms (newspapers, mock commercial ventures, video-based interactive social interventions, media hacks and hybrids, and, more recently, the Internet) that are outside the exclusive precincts of the art world. A fierce critic of the French contemporary art establishment, Forest famously sued the Centre Pompidou in 1994 over its opaque acquisition practices. After making foundational contributions to Sociological Art in the 1970s and the Aesthetics of Communication in the 1980s, the pioneering Forest saw the Internet as another way for artists to bypass the art establishment in the 1990s. Arguing that there is a strong utopian quality in Forest's work, Leruth sees this utopianism not as naive or conventional but as a reverse utopianism: rather than envisioning an impossible ideal, Forest reenvisions and probes the quasi-utopia of our media-augented everyday reality. The interface is the symbolic threshold to be crossed with an open mind.

This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Maurice Blanchot et l art au XX me si cle written by Emmanuelle Ravel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book L art l tat gazeux

Download or read book L art l tat gazeux written by Yves Michaud and published by Stock. This book was released on 2003-02-19 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
