Download or read book Moving Questions written by Joseph D Robinson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-27 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a half century of research on cellular membrane transport and on metabolic energy capture and utilization. During this time-which begins in the late 1930s-the effort and imagination of various scientists overthrew reigning formulations, created novel explanatory models, and unified previously distinct experimental fields. My primary goal is to display the course of that research, showing how new experiments defined novel entities and processes, and how an encompassing field, bioenergetics, then emerged. A secondary goal is to present examples of mainstream biological research that illustrate how experimental results-seen as refutations, confirmations, and elabora tions-can sway opinion toward a solid consensus. This interpretation differs from the currently fashionable view of some commentators that stresses instead the central roles of power, prestige, gender, class, and ethnicity. In any case, the scien tific practices exhibited here deserve proper philosophical scrutiny. Although con straints of space have squeezed any analysis from this draft, brief mention of salient issues does appear in relevant chapters and in the final conclusions. (Oddly, histori ans and philosophers seem reluctant to deal with this science. Those who do consider biological topics tend to focus on the theory of evolution, even though the bulk of biological research in this century, in terms of papers published and technology influenced, has dealt not with evolution per se but with what may be termed physiology and biochemistry. And these endeavors, which are the aims, efforts, and accomplishments of the vast majority of biologists, have been largely ignored.

Book Law and the Semantic Web

Download or read book Law and the Semantic Web written by V. Richard Benjamins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-02-09 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Roberto Cencioni At the Lisbon Summit in March 2000, European heads of state and government set a new goal for the European Union — to become the most competitive knowled- based society in the world by 2010. As part of this objective, ICT (information and communication technologies) services should become available for every citizen, and for all schools, homes and businesses. The book you have in front of you is about Semantic Web technology and law. Law is something omnipresent; all citizens — at some points in their lives — have to deal with it. In addition, law involves a large group of professionals, and is a mul- billion business world wide. Information technology is important because it that can improve citizens’ interaction with law, as well as improve legal professionals’ work environment. Legal professionals dedicate a significant amount of their time to finding, reading, analyzing and synthesizing information in order to take decisions, and prepare advice and trials, among other tasks. As part of the “Semantic-Based Knowledge and Content Systems” Strategic Objective, the European Commission is funding projects to construct technology to make the Semantic Web vision come true. 1 The articles in this book are related to two current foci of the Strategic Objective : • Knowledge acquisition and modelling, capturing knowledge from raw information and multimedia content in webs and other distributed repositories to turn poorly structured information into machi- processable knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Research in the Arts is a major collection of new writings on research in the creative and performing arts by leading authorities from around the world. It provides theoretical and practical approaches to identifying, structuring and resolving some of the key issues in the debate about the nature of research in the arts which have surfaced during the establishment of this subject over the last decade. Contributions are located in the contemporary intellectual environment of research in the arts, and more widely in the universities, in the strategic and political environment of national research funding, and in the international environment of trans-national cooperation and communication. The book is divided into three principal sections – Foundations, Voices and Contexts – each with an introduction from the editors highlighting the main issues, agreements and debates in each section. The Routledge Companion to Research in the Arts addresses a wide variety of concepts and issues, including: the diversity of views on what constitutes arts-based research and scholarship, what it should be, and its potential contribution the trans-national communication difficulties arising from terminological and ontological differences in arts-based research traditional and non-traditional concepts of knowledge, their relationship to professional practice, and their outcomes and audiences a consideration of the role of written, spoken and artefact-based languages in the formation and communication of understandings. This comprehensive collection makes an original and significant contribution to the field of arts-based research by setting down a framework for addressing these, and other, topical issues. It will be essential reading for research managers and policy-makers in research councils and universities, as well as individual researchers, research supervisors and doctoral candidates.

Book Approaches to the Medieval Self

Download or read book Approaches to the Medieval Self written by Stefka G. Eriksen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to discuss various modes of studying and defining the medieval self, based on a wide span of sources from medieval Western Scandinavia, c. 800-1500, such as archeological evidence, architecture and art, documents, literature, and runic inscriptions. The book engages with major theoretical discussions within the humanities and social sciences, such as cultural theory, practice theory, and cognitive theory. The authors investigate how the various approaches to the self influence our own scholarly mindsets and horizons, and how they condition what aspects of the medieval self are 'visible' to us. Utilizing this insight, we aim to propose a more syncretic approach towards the medieval self, not in order to substitute excellent models already in existence, but in order to foreground the flexibility and the complementarity of the current theories, when these are seen in relationship to each other. The self and how it relates to its surrounding world and history is a main concern of humanities and social sciences. Focusing on the theoretical and methodological flexibility when approaching the medieval self has the potential to raise our awareness of our own position and agency in various social spaces today.
