Book Along the Hampton Shore Classic Reprint

Download or read book Along the Hampton Shore Classic Reprint written by Harry Alden Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along the Hampton Shore Down beside the ocean, and occupying five miles of New Hampshire's scant fourteen of seacoast, where low green meadows touched now and then by the ebb and flow of the tide, and long lines of white, glistening sand dunes meet the eye of the summer sojourner, lies Hampton beach, a resort which from a very early time has achieved prominence, and which as the years go on, is making rapid strides as a popular vacation-time abiding place. Not far from Hampton Falls, where Whittier, the poet of New England, the friend of the slave and the Abolitionist passed his declining days; on the ocean boulevard, one of the three state highways of New Hampshire, and within easy radius of Portsmouth, the quaint old seaport city, the place is one that is accessible from all points, which may to some extent account for the vast business which is steadily upon the increase. Soon after the settlement of Hampton by the Rev. Stephen Bachelor in 1638, the first road along the ocean front was laid out from Great Boars Head to Portsmouth. Bachelor, to whom the town owes its settlement, came from England, being more than seventy years of age when he arrived in America where he set out to try his fortunes. A little band of sturdy pioneers of his faith came with him, but before settling down in Winnicummet or "The Place of the Beautiful Pines" which the Indian name typifies. Bachelor and his followers made short stays in Boston, Lynn, Ipswich, and Newbury, none of which appealed to them as did Hampton, where they were given permission to settle by the General Court of Massachusetts. Book excerpt: Early in the 1900s, one-time oil baron Henry Morrison Flagler took interest in the Southern coast of Florida and began developing an exclusive resort community. Establishing a railroad that would allow easier access to the area, he went on to build two hotels—his hope was that America’s first families would come to populate the area. This modest community would later evolve into an iconic American destination, hosting British royalty, American movie stars, and becoming the home-away-from-home to some of the country’s leading families. As the century continued, Palm Beach established itself as a luxury hideaway synonymous with old-world glamour and new-world sophistication. In this splendid volume, longtime resident and Palm Beach social fixture Aerin Lauder takes us through her Palm Beach. From favorite restaurants like Nandos and Renatos, to favorite houses like La Follia and Villa Artemis, she takes us to the elite shopping of Worth Avenue and the scenic walkways of the Lake Worth trail, all the while relating to us the histories, faces, and places that have become so identified with Palm Beach.

Book Idyls of the Golden Shore Classic Reprint

Download or read book Idyls of the Golden Shore Classic Reprint written by Hugh Maxwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idyls of the Golden Shore "There is a pleasure in the pathless woods; There is a rapture on the lonely shore; There is society where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar." - Byron. The thirty-six pieces of verse to be found in this book were written as fragments, no one depending upon or related to another. They were written, for the most part, at night by my campfire, while on the western plains and deserts, or during stormy days in the Sierra Nevada Mountains when I could not leave shelter; frequently, also, in the noise and confusion of a camp full of frontiersmen or Indians with nothing to do but sing and talk. Several of the pieces, in part or in full, have appeared in the newspapers, mostly in the West Virginia School Journal, Wheeling Intelligencer, Preston Journal, Toledo Blade, and the Louisville Courier-Journal. But I have changed all of them since then, I hope for the better. They all relate to California, or the "Golden Shore," that strange and beautiful country, different from all other lands of earth. I have endeavored to write as the subjects impressed themselves upon me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
