Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using historical and ethnographic records, an attempt is made to reconstruct the traditional economic and social patterns of the Inuit of the Mackenzie Delta and Beaufort Sea coast, focussing on the Kittegaryumiut of the East Channel area. Two seasons of archaeological work at the large village of Kittigazuit, and at smaller related sites, are reported. The cultural pattern and way of life reconstructed for the nineteenth century Kittegaryumiut appears to extend at least 500 years into the past, and to be centred on the hunting of beluga in a unique natural trap.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talking Violence is a conversational journey around St. John's, reconstructing the repeated discussions about violence heard in bars, cars, courts-of-law, halfway houses, hospitals and the university. Rapport offers an interpretation of these conversations; arguing that language should not be viewed as an instrument of coercion directing its users to the reproduction of a monolithic social structure, but rather as a vehicle of creativeness allowing people to construct local identities for themselves and their own worlds of meaning.
Download or read book Despite this Loss written by Elizabeth Yeoman and published by ISER Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection includes a variety of forms - art, photography, personal narrative, translation and cross disciplinary scholarly essay - to discuss many levels and kinds of loss: cultural assimilation and change, environmental devastation, language loss, personal and collective losses, community tragedies, and a loss of continuity and sense of home and place. The book as a whole considers the impact of these losses and their relationship to culture, memory, and identity. As part of this consideration, Despite This Loss celebrates and supports new and established lines of inquiry into the structures of feeling that constitute place and belonging. The collection includes work by a new generation of cultural workers whose claims to and dreams for this place hold promise and provide a vibrant and provocative array of perspectives on cultural loss.
Download or read book Violence and Public Anxiety written by Elliott Leyton and published by St. John's, Nfld. : Institute of Social and Economic Research, Memorial University. This book was released on 1992 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central question posed in this book is whether or not Newfoundland is becoming more violent. Three different papers examine various dimensions of crime and violence in the province from an historical perspective, illustrating how public perceptions of crime are formed. The first paper, by William O'Grady, discusses how violence is defined and measured. Based on examination of how official statistics are compiled and used, he assesses their ability to accurately record the incidence of violence. The next paper, by Elliott Leyton, investigates the role played by the press and by various interest groups in the period since the mid-1970s, in shaping and sustaining the idea that Newfoundland is in the midst of a wave of crime and violence. Overton's paper is an historical case study which examines the complex relationships between violence, questions of popular protest, public order, and economic and political conditions in Newfoundland in the 1930s.
