Book excerpt: Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT) are global crimes impacting local communities. Vulnerable people are exploited through labour, sex and forced criminality. Churches and Communities are increasingly encountering these victims and survivors, and consequently need to develop more effective engagement. The book will highlight that Churches and Communities are in a unique position to partner towards slavery-free communities. Beginning with the narratives of survivors who experienced three different forms of MSHT, including labour exploitation, sexual exploitation and domestic exploitation, the book then shows how practitioners and theologians respond to these narratives through exploring theologies of suffering, ecology, missiology, restorative justice, trinitarian theology and liberation theology. Offering faith responses from organisaions such The Salvation Army, The Clewer Initiative, BMS World Mission and Rene Cassinhe the volume also includes a final resource section with prayers and liturgy for survivors and victims as well as for church and community responses. The book includes a forward by the Rt Hon Theresa May MP and an opening prayer by the Most Revd Justin Welby

Book Bible View of Slavery by John H Hopkins Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible View of Slavery, by John H. Hopkins, Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont Testaments, which, as the written word of God, afford the only infallible standard of moral rights and obligations: " "and thus [by the Southern slaves becoming Christianized through slavery] the wisdom and goodness of God are vindicated in the sanction which his Word has given, and the sentence originally passed upon Canaan, as a curse, has been converted into a blessing" (p.16);and again: "Under the rule of the Scriptures and the Constitution of the United States, the negro belongs to an inferior race, which the law did not presume to be fitted for freedom at any age" (p.12); and finally: "God, in his wisdom and providence, caused the patriarch Noah to predict that he [the negro] should be the servant of servants to the posterity of Japhet (p.12). This, then, is the proposition, that the negro slavery of the Southern States is justified by Holy Scripture. In the examination of the writer's arguments, therefore, we have nothing to do directly with Hebrew slavery, or Greek slavery, or Roman slavery, or any other system than that now in force in the slaveholding states of the Union. The writer divides his arguments into two main heads, those from the Old Testament and those from the New Testament Scriptures. The most of these have necessarily nothing to do with the subject under discussion, as they relate exclusively to the special enactments for the regulation of the Hebrew social system. By way of introduction the writer asserts that "Slavery appears to have existed in all the ages of our world, by the universal evidence of history, whether sacred or profane." It may be sufficient to set over against this, the assertion of one certainly not less eminent in the church than the author of the pamphlet before us. St. Chrysostom says: "But if you ask whence slavery has its origin, and why it has entered into human life, for I know that many readily ask and are desirous of learning such things, I will tell you; avarice, vulgar display, and insatiable cupidity, begat slavery; since Noah had no slave, Abel had no slave, nor Seth, nor yet those after this;" (Hom. in Epist. ad Ephes.22.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible View of Slavery I proceed, accordingly, to the evi dence of the sacred Scriptures, which, long ago, produced complete conviction in my own mind, and must, as I regard it, be equally conclusive to every can did and sincere inquirer. When the array Of positive proof is exhibited, I shall consider the objections, and ex amine their validity with all the fair ness in my power. Blessed be the Lord God of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant. God shall enlarge J a phet, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be his ser vant. (gen. 9. Book An Inquiry Into the Scriptural Views of Slavery

Download or read book An Inquiry Into the Scriptural Views of Slavery written by Albert Barnes and published by Legare Street Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this influential treatise on the morality of slavery, Albert Barnes examines the Bible's teachings on the subject and argues that it is incompatible with Christian principles. Barnes draws upon close readings of Scripture to show that the institution of slavery is at odds with the Biblical ideals of love, justice, and human dignity. He also critiques the arguments put forth by defenders of slavery, including the assertion that it was sanctioned by the Bible and that it was a necessary evil. With its insightful exegesis and impassioned rhetoric, this book played a crucial role in the abolitionist movement in the United States. Download or read book The Bible Against Slavery Human Rights Laws Written in the Holy Scripture written by Theodore Dwight Weld and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible Against Slavery is a study on the subject of human rights written by American abolitionist Theodore Dwight Weld with the goal to refute the argument that Bible supports slavery. The Bible contains many references to slavery, which was a common practice in antiquity. However, the slavery mentioned in the Bible is quite different from chattel slavery practiced in the American South, and in some cases the word "slave" is a mistranslation. The author claims that the spirit of slavery never seeks shelter in the Bible.
