The significant bandwidth requirement for multimedia services has increased the demand for radio spectrum. The scarcity of radio spectrum has challenged the conventional fixed spectrum assignment policy. As a result, cognitive radio emerged as a new paradigm to address the spectrum underutilization problem by enabling users to opportunistically access unused spectrum bands. In this thesis, we propose a framework for video transmission over cognitive radio networks. Our objective is to determine the optimal streaming policy in order to maximize the overall perceived video quality while keeping quality fluctuation at minimum. In our framework, we introduce a channel usage model based on a two-state Markov model and estimate the future busy and idle durations of the spectrum based on past observations. On the basis of this scheme, we formulate the streaming optimization problem under the constraint of the available bandwidth budget so that the optimal number of enhancement layer bits are assigned to each frame. We extend this algorithm for three different optimization levels: frame, GOP and scene. We evaluate our algorithm through extensive trace-driven simulation, and show that it improves the perceived video quality and increases bandwidth utilization.

Book excerpt: "Several challenges face reliable video streaming over wireless networks due to the stringent requirements of high data rate, low error rate, and limited end-to-end delay. Cognitive radio (CR) networks offer a great advantage to unlicensed users (typically called secondary users) by allowing them to exploit the unused spectrum of licensed users (known as primary users) on an opportunistic basis. However, it is more challenging to deliver video services over dynamic CR channels that are available to secondary users not only intermittently but with all the challenges of wireless channels. In this research, several frameworks are proposed to stream different scalable videos from a base station to multiple secondary users over a CR network. The objective of this study is to ensure that end users will enjoy continuous video playback with acceptable perceptual quality. To achieve such a goal, a channel allocation algorithm is introduced to adaptively assign the available radio channels to secondary users while taking into considerations the quality of their assigned channels as well as their buffer occupancies. In addition, different streaming algorithms are devised to ensure the delivery of scalable video frames, with base and enhancement layers, within the delay constraints with priority given to the base-layer frames to guarantee the continuity of video playback. Moreover, adaptive modulation is used based on the importance of transmitted video information and the channel state information (CSI) as fed-back by secondary users. Extensive simulations are performed using SimEvents simulator in MATLAB, the results of which show that the proposed schemes that integrate the devised channel allocation and streaming algorithms with adaptive modulation and scalable source coding techniques react to the variations in the channel conditions and the dynamics of the secondary users’ playback buffers in an acceptable fashion. This in turn resulted in efficient usage of the available CR resources as demonstrated in the achieved peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the reconstructed video streams with no interruptions in the playback process. It has also been shown that scalable videos outperform their single-layer counterparts in terms of the achieved video quality. Finally, it is shown that joint adaptive modulation and channel coding results in improved bandwidth utilization, continuous playback and enhanced perceptual video quality at the secondary users end."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I examine the performance of a cognitive radio (CR) system in a hostile environment where an intelligent adversary tries to disrupt communications with a Gaussian noise signal. I analyze a cluster-based network of secondary users (SUs). The adversary can limit access for SUs by either transmitting a spoofing signal in the sensing interval, or a desynchronizing signal in the code acquisition interval. By jamming the network during the transmission interval, the adversary can reduce the rate of successful transmission. In the first part (Chapters 2 and 3), I investigate the optimal strategy for spoofing and jamming to minimize the SU throughput in a generic communication system. I investigate the system performance under attack over slow and fast Rayleigh fading channels. I present how the adversary can optimally allocate power across subcarriers during sensing and transmission intervals with knowledge of the system, using a simple optimization approach. I determine a worst-case optimal-energy allocation for spoofing and jamming, which gives a lower bound to the overall information throughput of SUs under attack. I then extend the analysis to optimal spoofing power allocation for a CR network operating in Nakagami-m fading. The optimized adversary reduces the throughput by a factor of 4 to 5, relative to an adversary who divides power equally across all bands, around 25 dB jamming-to-signal-power ratio (JSR), under slow fading. Under fast fading, the optimized adversary can disrupt the communication at a JSR 10 dB lower than an unoptimized adversary. In the second part (Chapters 4 and 5), I consider the disruptive attacks on a video-transmitting CR network. I investigate the optimal strategy for spoofing, desynchronizing and jamming a cluster based CR network with a Gaussian noise signal. I generalize the optimization approach from Chapter 1 to show how the adversary can optimally allocate its energy across subcarriers during sensing, code acquisition and transmission intervals. I determine a worst-case optimal-energy allocation for spoofing, desynchronizing and jamming, which gives an upper bound to the received video distortion of SUs. I also propose cross-layer resource allocation algorithms and evaluate their performance under disruptive attacks. The optimized adversary can reduce the received video peak-signal-to-noise-ratio up to 5 dB lower than an equal-power adversary, at low JSR.
