Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorious Charles: A Ladies' Man is a fascinating historical account of the lives of the nobility and the poor in 15th Century France, under the reign of King Charles VII. Charles VII was a warrior King who reigned at the time of France's decades-long war against Henry V's England. Charles is also often remembered for his numerous high-profile affairs, including one with the beautiful Agnes Sorel, known at the time as the Dame de Beaute. The book explores Charles' youth, his crazy mother, and the positive influence of his aunt, Yolande d'Aragon. Charles ruled during the time of Joan of Arc, "The Virgin Warrior" who fought valiantly for France in the war. She delivered Orleans from the English, before being burned at the stake after a religious court sentenced her to death, proclaiming her a sorceress. The late Caroline (Cally) Rogers Neill Sehnaoui was born in 1944 in Manchester, NH to a 16th generation American family of English and Scottish descent. Her father was educated at West Point and Princeton, and her mother's ancestor was William Barton Rogers, who founded MIT in 1861.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War is a deadly game of chance where a single detail or decision can have far-reaching consequences. What if Hitlers generals had captured the cream of the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk? What if Turkey had sided with Germany and smashed through Russias' back door to claim the prized Caucasus oil fields? What if Rommel had driven the British back into the sea on D-Day and the Luftwaffe had defeated the RAF in the Battle of Britain. The Allies could have lost the Second World War in many ways, and ten noted historians show clearly how in this collection of fascinating, provocative scenarios, based on meticulous research. By turns gripping and chilling, Third Reich Victorious offers a fresh insight into the vagaries of war that can make all the difference between the victor and the vanquished.

Book Victoria Victorious

  • Author : Jean Plaidy
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2009-02-19

Download or read book Victoria Victorious written by Jean Plaidy and published by Crown. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unforgettable novel of Queen Victoria, Jean Plaidy re-creates a remarkable life filled with romance, triumph, and tragedy. At birth, Princess Victoria was fourth in line for the throne of England, the often-overlooked daughter of a prince who died shortly after her birth. She and her mother lived in genteel poverty for most of her childhood, exiled from court because of her mother’s dislike of her uncles, George IV and William IV. A strong, willful child, Victoria was determined not to be stifled by her powerful uncles or her unpopular, controlling mother. Then one morning, at the age of eighteen, Princess Victoria awoke to the news of her uncle William’s death. The almost-forgotten princess was now Queen of England. Even better, she was finally free of her mother’s iron hand and her uncles’ manipulations. Her first act as queen was to demand that she be given a room—and a bed—of her own. Victoria’s marriage to her German cousin, Prince Albert, was a blissfully happy one that produced nine children. Albert was her constant companion and one of her most trusted advisors. Victoria’s grief after Prince Albert’s untimely death was so shattering that for the rest of her life—nearly forty years—she dressed only in black. She survived several assassination attempts, and during her reign England’s empire expanded around the globe until it touched every continent in the world. Derided as a mere “girl queen” at her coronation, by the end of her sixty-four-year reign, Victoria embodied the glory of the British Empire. In this novel, written as a “memoir” by Victoria herself, she emerges as truthful, sentimental, and essentially human—both a lovable woman and a great queen.
