Book Victorian Figurative Painting

Download or read book Victorian Figurative Painting written by Mary Cowling and published by Andreas Papadakis Publishers. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their jewel-like colors and exquisite details, Pre-Raphaelite paintings are objects of beauty in themselves, but the artists intended them to serve a more serious purpose as well. Today, however, few of their admirers appreciate or know how to unravel the depths of meaning that lie hidden in them. This book makes them more accessible, by explaining how the Pre-Raphaelites imbued the most ordinary and familiar objects with symbolic meaning, and in Rossetti's case, evolved a personal mythology through which he attempted to explore the spiritual and emotional values of an increasingly agnostic age.

Book Victorian Narrative Painting

Download or read book Victorian Narrative Painting written by Julia Thomas and published by Tate. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian narrative paintings offer a unique insight into the 19th century. The plight of women, the affects of the class system, and the onslaught of industry are all forced upon the attention of the viewer. Within each picture there is a story to uncover, either optimistic, educational, or tragic. Hugely popular in the Victorian period, the paintings tell much about how the Victorians viewed themselves and those whose "transgressive" practices threatened their respectability. An illustrated introduction decodes the conventions used in narrative painting, from literary and artistic allusions to the use of symbolism. The stories contained in works by William Holman Hunt, William Powell Frith, Richard Redgrave, John Everett Millais, and many others are uncovered in detailed examinations of their paintings.

Download or read book Problem Pictures written by PamelaGerrish Nunn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Victorian period there developed a new anxiety about male-female relations and roles in modern society, as described by a member of the Athenaeum in 1858, ?the distinction of man and woman, their separate as well as their joint rights, begins to occupy the attention of our whole community, and with no small effect?. These essays examine Victorian painting in the light of this 'woman question' by analysing the change in representation of the family, romance, social issues such as emigration and colonialism, the use of the female nude and the traditions of portraiture, history-painting and still life. The art and artists are considered in a socio-political context, and the connections between Victorian sexism, racism and classism are examined. These essays bring to light much previously unknown work (especially by women) and reappraise many well-known paintings.

Book Victorian Ethical Optics

Download or read book Victorian Ethical Optics written by Natalie Prizel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-14 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian Ethical Optics asks how artists and authors in the Victorian period answer the ethical question of how one should live with others by turning to a more specific one: how should one look at others? Looking would seem to necessarily lead to interpretation and judgment, but this book shows how Victorian artists and authors imagined other ethical and optical relations. In an era in which aberrant, deformed, and disabled bodies proliferated—particularly those bodies ravaged by industrial labor and poverty—the ideological and economic stakes of looking at such bodies peaked; moreover, as work became a gospel and the question of deservingness became central, looking at aberrant bodies was always a matter of ethics and politics. The aesthetic thinking of John Ruskin animates the visual ethics at the center of this book, as he advocates for "innocence of the eye," which calls for a return to infantile sight of a kind that precedes judgment or classification. Although Ruskin understands such innocence to be an asymptote, optical innocence remains an ethical demand, and it is to this demand that this book attends. Among the authors and artists included are Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Wilkie Collins, Henry Mayhew, Ford Madox Brown, John Everett Millais, and other members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Encounters between normative and aberrant characters or figures within a text or visual object shape the encounter that the external reader or viewer has with those same aberrant bodies. The category of the aberrant draws on ideas from queer and disability studies but makes a case for a broader understanding of strange bodies; in this book, aberrant bodies are those whose visible forms lead to a breakdown in cognition, a breakdown that makes space for the innocent eye to move. In thinking about such bodies, this book introduces the term extranormative to explain the complex and often complicit relationship these figures exemplify in relation to a (surprisingly expansive) Victorian norm. Thinking in terms of extranormativity as an essential feature of Victorian life disrupts tired notions of the period as one in which a narrow definition of bourgeois normativity took hold.

Book excerpt: Victoria Crowe is considered to be among the most critical and original figurative painters currently working in Scotland. Over the last 30 years she has established herself as a painter of work that is instantly recognisable. This complete monograph is the first to focus on this highly acclaimed artist, presenting approximately 120 lavish colour plates. The works featured come from National Collections in both the UK and overseas. The mysterious, ornate and enigmatic images presented here complement a personal journey, told from the artist's own perspective. Crowe's highly individual words are punctuated by the voices of critics and art historians, which help to place her work in context. The full range of her exceptional work is covered, including interiors, portraits, self-portraits, still-lifes and landscapes, and work that refuses to be defined by such precise categorisation.

Book Printing and Painting the News in Victorian London

Download or read book Printing and Painting the News in Victorian London written by Andrea Korda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printing and Painting the News in Victorian London offers a fresh perspective on Social Realism by contextualizing it within the burgeoning new media environment of Victorian London. Paintings labelled as Social Realist by Luke Fildes, Frank Holl and Hubert Herkomer are frequently considered to typify the sentimental Victorian genre painting that quickly became outdated with the development of modernism. Yet this book argues that the paintings must be considered as the result of the new experiences of modernity-the urban poverty that the paintings represent and, most importantly, the advent of the mass-produced illustrated news. Fildes, Holl and Herkomer worked for The Graphic, a publication launched in 1869 as a rival to the dominant Illustrated London News. The artists? illustrations, which featured the growing problem of urban poverty, became the basis for large-scale paintings that provoked controversy among their contemporaries and later became known as Social Realism. This first in-depth study of The Graphic and Social Realism uses the approach of media archaeology to unearth the modernity of these works, showing that they engaged with the changing notions of objectivity and immediacy that nineteenth-century new media cultivated. In doing so, this book proposes an alternative trajectory for the development of modernism that allows for a richer understanding of nineteenth-century visual culture.

Book excerpt: Jeremy Paxman's unique portrait of the Victorian age takes readers on an exciting journey through the birth of modern Britain. Using the paintings of the era as a starting point, he tells us stories of urban life, family, faith, industry and empire that helped define the Victorian spirit and imagination. To Paxman, these paintings were the television of their day, and his exploration of Victorian art and society shows how these artists were chronicling a world changing before their eyes. This enthralling history is Paxman at his best - opinionated, informed, witty, surprising - and a glorious reminder of how the Victorians made us who we are today.

Book Painted Men in Britain 1868 918

Download or read book Painted Men in Britain 1868 918 written by JongwooJeremy Kim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and overdue exploration of the representation of masculinity in British academic art in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Painted Men in Britain, 1868-1918 analyzes transgressions of gender and sexuality as represented in paintings by Leighton, Sargent, Tuke, and their contemporaries in the Royal Academy. This volume treats paintings as eloquent objects, no narratives of which are too elusive to be traced, and challenges conventional binaries of masculine versus feminine or heterosexual versus homosexual. Consulting not only the paintings themselves but also newspapers, journals, criticism, novels, and poetry of the day, Painted Men argues against the misconception of British academic art as merely reactionary and even blind to the dynamism of its own time. Instead, this art is shown to engage with broader social attitudes and contemporary sexual debates. As the book reveals the complexities of specific paintings, it illuminates different and competing attitudes toward masculinity and modernity in British art of the period.

Download or read book Ceramics in the Victorian Era written by Rachel Gotlieb and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book broadens the discussion of pottery and china in the Victorian era by situating them in the national, imperial, design reform, and domestic debates between 1840 and 1890. Largely ignored in recent scholarship, Ceramics in the Victorian Era: Meanings and Metaphors in Painting and Literature argues that the signification of a pot, a jug, or a tableware pattern can be more fully discerned in written and painted representations. Across five case studies, the book explores a rhetoric and set of conventions that developed within the representation of ceramics, emerging in the late-18th century, and continuing in the Victorian period. Each case study begins with a textual passage exemplifying the outlined theme and closes with an object analysis to demonstrate how the fusing of text, image, and object are critical to attaining the period eye in order to better understand the metaphorical meanings of ceramics. Essential reading not only for ceramics scholars, but also those of material culture, the book mines the rich and diverse archive of Victorian painting and literature, from the avant-garde to the sentimental, from the well-known to the more obscure, to shed light on the at once complex and simple implications of ceramics' agencies at this time.

Book William Powell Frith

  • Author : William Powell Frith
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2006-01-01
  • ISBN : 0300121903

Download or read book William Powell Frith written by William Powell Frith and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Powell Frith (1819-1909) was the greatest British painter of the social scene since Hogarth. His panoramas of nineteenth-century life broke new ground in their depiction of the diverse London crowd, and they are now icons of their age. Frith’s popularity in his lifetime was unprecedented; on six separate occasions special railings had to be built at the Royal Academy to protect his paintings from an admiring public. Derby Day and The Railway Station are nearly as well known today as a century ago, yet the artist who painted them is now neglected. This book explores Frith's place in the development of Victorian painting: the impact of his unconventional private life on his work, his relationships with Hogarth and Dickens, his influence on popular illustration, the place of costume in his paintings, his female models, his painting materials and practice, and much more. The book makes an important contribution to the literature on art in the Victorian era and to our understanding of the nineteenth century.
