Book Vibrational Excitation of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide by High Velocity Collision with Molecular Oxygen

Download or read book Vibrational Excitation of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide by High Velocity Collision with Molecular Oxygen written by A. Rahbee and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hyperthermal molecular beam apparatus, utilizing a heated seeded supersonic nozzle capable of producing fast intense beams of atmospheric species, has been employed to study vibrational excitation of plume species carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. The apparatus is provided with a novel neutral beam detector for measurement of beam intensity and velocity distribution. The excitation mechanism is studied through monitoring of the infrared emission from the plume species by the use of lead sulfide, lead selenide, and indium antimonide. Lack of measurable signals is analyzed in terms of signal to noise ratios and it is shown that excitation cross sections generally have an upper limit of 10 to the 19th power per square centimeter showing that transfer of translational energy into internal energy does not take place efficiently. (Author).

Book Absolute Collisional Excitation Cross Section Measurements Using Crossed Molecular Beams

Download or read book Absolute Collisional Excitation Cross Section Measurements Using Crossed Molecular Beams written by Andrew Freedman and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement of absolute excitation cross-sections of the asymmetric stretch mode (001) of H20 and C02 for collisions with atomic oxygen is important in understanding the signatures of high-altitude rocket plumes. Experiments are performed in a crossed molecular beam apparatus in which a CVF detector measures the collisionally-induced infrared fluorescent signal. Calibration and testing of the atomic oxygen source was completed. It was installed into the crossed beam apparatus and vacuum tested in preparation for performing the excitation cross-section measurements. Upper limits have been established for the excitation cross sections for the systems 0 + C02 and Ar + C02. The values determined are 0.03A squared for 0 + C02 at 3.85 km/sec and 0.003 A squared for Ar + C02 at 2.27 km/sec. Monte Carlo trajectory analysis of the data provides accurate correction factors to the raw data that account for kinematic and experimental constraints inherent in these measurements. It further shows that measurements near threshold cannot be used to determine the functional energy dependence of the cross section. Further modifications and improvements in the experimental approaches to improve sensitivity will be discussed.

Book Coupled Vibration and Dissociation Relaxation Behind Strong Shock Waves in Carbon Dioxide

Download or read book Coupled Vibration and Dissociation Relaxation Behind Strong Shock Waves in Carbon Dioxide written by Franz Hindelang and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harmonic oscillator rigid-rotator model has been used to calculate the relaxation region behind a shock wave in carbon dioxide. Finite relaxation rates for the three different vibrational modes and two dissociation reactions are included. Models for the coupling between the vibrational relaxation and the dissociation process are based on the assumption that dissociation can proceed from any vibrational level with equal probability. Two different models for the vibrational excitation have been examined. Solutions have been obtained for the interdependent fluid-flow, chemical rate, and vibrational relaxation-rate equations incorporating estimated rate coefficients. Results are presented in the form of flow-field profiles for density, pressure, translational and vibrational temperatures, and species concentrations. The effects of vibrational excitation, vibration-dissociation coupling, and energy exchange between the vibrational modes are investigated. The effect of vibrational relaxation and vibration-dissociation coupling is much stronger in CO2 with three different vibrational modes than in diatomic gases with only a single mode. The results of this study show that the effect of coupled vibrational relaxation and dissociation can sometimes alter the flow-field profiles by a factor of 2 compared to similar calculations without such coupling. For vibrational relaxation the results indicate that the shock-wave profiles depend primarily on the rate at which the translational energy is fed into internal modes and not so strongly on the energy distribution among the modes.

Book The Deactivation of Vibrationally Excited Carbon Dioxide 001 by Collisions with Carbon Monoxide

Download or read book The Deactivation of Vibrationally Excited Carbon Dioxide 001 by Collisions with Carbon Monoxide written by W. A Rosser (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate constants associated with the deactivation of vibrationally excited CO2* (001) by collisions with CO have been experimentally determined from 300 to 900K by a laser fluorescence method. The probability per collision of vibrational energy transfer from CO2* (001) to CO (v = 0) was computed by a theory involving long range forces. The calculated probabilities are in good agreement with the probabilities deduced from measurement of R1, the transfer rate constant in the exothermic direction. (Author).

Book Vibrational Relaxation in Carbon Dioxide

Download or read book Vibrational Relaxation in Carbon Dioxide written by W. J. Witteman and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibrational excitation of a CO2 molecule in collision with another CO2 molecule was investigated. A derivation of the cross section by means of the method of the distorted waves and the rate of total energy transfer are presented. It was concluded that there are two relaxation processes with different relaxation times related to direct excitation of the bending mode and excitation in series of the valence mode. Experimental results confirm this conclusion. The experimental relaxation time for the bending vibration was one- half of the calculated value, which may be considered a fair agreement in view of the uncertainty involved in the interaction potential and of other approximations which had to be introduced into the calculations.
