Book Vibration Modes of Spherical Shells and Containment Vessels

Download or read book Vibration Modes of Spherical Shells and Containment Vessels written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spherical pressure vessels are used to fully contain the effects of high explosions. In this paper, the vibrations of a spherical containment vessel undergoing elastic response are investigated. Vibration modes of containment vessels are of particular interest, as it is the superposition and interaction of different modes of response with closely spaced frequencies that has been reported to be the mechanism of 'strain growth'. First, the modal frequencies of a spherical shell for both axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric response modes are discussed, based on a sequence of papers that have appeared in the open literature. Analytical predictions are then compared with numerical simulations using ABAQUS. It is found that the numerical simulations accurately predict both the axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric modal frequencies for the complete spherical shell. Next, numerical simulations of modal frequencies for the more complex spherical containment vessel (with nozzles) are compared with the spherical shell results. Numerical simulations for the spherical containment vessel reveal that frequencies are somewhat similar to the complete spherical shell. Limited comparisons with experimentally recorded frequencies for participating modes of vessel dynamic response during high explosive containment testing are presented as well.

Book Vibrations of Complete Spherical Shells with Imperfections

Download or read book Vibrations of Complete Spherical Shells with Imperfections written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous theoretical investigations on the natural frequencies for complete spherical shells have been reported over the past four decades. However, attempts at correlating the theoretical results with either experimental or simulated results (both for axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes of vibration) are almost completely lacking. In this paper, natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric theories of vibration of complete spherical shells and from Finite Element computer simulations of the vibrations, with and without geometrical imperfections, are presented. Modal tests reported elsewhere on commercially available, thin spherical marine floats (with imperfections) are utilized as a basis for comparison of frequencies to both the theoretical and numerical results. In addition, comparisons with 'whole field' measurements on one of the imperfect shells using dynamic holography are presented. Because of the imperfections present, 'splitting' of frequencies of non-axisymmetric modes is anticipated. Correlations of recorded natural frequencies of the spherical shells with earlier theoretical results and with finite element simulations for the first few modes are good, and the presence of the frequency splitting phenomenon is demonstrated.

Book Similarity Methods in Engineering Dynamics

Download or read book Similarity Methods in Engineering Dynamics written by P.S. Westine and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the second revised and updated edition of probably the most practical sourcebook on similarity methods and modeling techniques available. Written by leading authorities who incorporate many of the latest advances in the field, this new work maps out techniques for modeling as well as instrumentation and data analysis for an extremely wide array of problems in engineering dynamics. This practical reference uses experimental test data on various engineering problems demonstrating exactly how and why these similarity methods work. The problems involve spread of oil slicks, explosive cratering, car crashes, space vehicle heat exchange, explosive forming, and more. The spectrum of topics covered and number of examples are far greater than in other texts. Of particular importance are the dissimilar material modeling techniques which bring new versatility and freedom to the modeler in structural dynamics. The book also contains a clear, in-depth discussion of the theory underlying modeling and includes alternate methods for developing model laws. The work will undoubtedly prove invaluable to every professional involved in testing or design of dynamic experiments.
