Book Vibration and Structural Response of Hybrid Wind Turbine Blades

Download or read book Vibration and Structural Response of Hybrid Wind Turbine Blades written by Norimichi Nanami and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renewable energy is a serious alternative to deliver the energy needs of an increasing world population and improve economic activity. Wind energy provides better environmental and economic benefits in comparison with the other renewable energy sources. Wind energy is capable of providing 72 TW (TW = 1012 W) of electric power, which is approximately four and half times the world energy consumption of 15.8 TW as reported in 2006. Since power output extracted from wind turbines is proportional to the square of the blade length and the cube of the wind speed, wind turbine size has grown rapidly in the last two decades to match the increase in power output. As the blade length increases, so does its weight opening up design possibilities to introduce hybrid glass and carbon fiber composite materials as lightweight structural load bearing alternatives. Herein, we investigate the feasibility of introducing modular composite tubulars as well as hybrid sandwich composite skins in the next generation blades. After selecting a target energy output, 8 MW with 80 m blade, airfoil geometry and the layup for the skin as well as internal reinforcements are proposed. They are incorporated into the computational blade via linear shell elements for the skin, and linear beam elements for the composite tubulars to assess the relationship between weight reduction and structural performance. Computational simulations are undertaken to understand the static and dynamic regimes; specifically, displacements, stresses, and vibration modes. The results showed that the composite layers did not exhibit any damage. However, in the balsa core of the sandwich skin, the von Mises stress exceeded its allowable at wind speeds ranging from 11.0 m/sec to 12.6 m/sec. In the blades with composite tubular reinforcement, two different types of damage are observed: a. Stress concentrations at the tubular-skin attachments, and b. Highest von Mises stress caused by the flapping bending moment. The vibration studies revealed a strong coupling mode, bending and twist, at the higher natural frequencies of the blade with tubular truss configuration. The weight saving measures in developing lighter blades in this study did not detract from the blades structural response for the selected load cases.

Book Structural Analysis of Composite Wind Turbine Blades

Download or read book Structural Analysis of Composite Wind Turbine Blades written by Dimitris I Chortis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the development of novel finite elements for the structural analysis of composite beams and blades. The introduction of material damping is also an important aspect of composite structures and it is presented here in terms of their static and dynamic behavior. The book thoroughly presents a new shear beam finite element, which entails new blade section mechanics, capable of predicting structural blade coupling due to composite coupling and/or internal section geometry. Theoretical background is further expanded towards the inclusion of nonlinear structural blade models and damping mechanics for composite structures. The models effectively include geometrically nonlinear terms due to large displacements and rotations, improve the modeling accuracy of very large flexible blades, and enable the modeling of rotational stiffening and buckling, as well as, nonlinear structural coupling. Validation simulations on specimen level study the geometric nonlinearities effect on the modal frequencies and damping values of composite strips of various angle-ply laminations under either tensile or buckling loading. A series of correlation cases between numerical predictions and experimental measurements give credence to the developed nonlinear beam finite element models and underline the essential role of new nonlinear damping and stiffness terms.

Book Applications of Passive Vibration Control and Damage Detection in Composite Wind Turbine Blades

Download or read book Applications of Passive Vibration Control and Damage Detection in Composite Wind Turbine Blades written by Jeffery Dwayne Tippmann and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this dissertation was to develop passive techniques for vibration control and structural health monitoring applications in structures operating in conditions of significant ambient noise. These goals were accomplished through the use of an experimental wind turbine blade that represents the materials and design of a full scale wind turbine with the inclusion of devices simulating the presence of known manufacturing defects. The vibration control aim was accomplished using a shunted array of piezoelectric elements tuned to the vibration properties of the blade skin. The macro-fiber composite (MFC) composite piezoelectric transducer was bonded to the wind turbine blade skin and connected to the tuned shunt circuit. The damage detection techniques were developed using both an aluminum plate and the experimental wind turbine blade. Two approaches using a reconstructed impulse response function are presented. The first examines the break in reciprocity of impulse response functions. A single similarity damage index was proposed and then extended into a multi-feature analysis. The second method applied linear and nonlinear beamforming techniques using an experimentally generated replica field and cross-spectral signal processing techniques. The passive reconstruction of the impulse response function between two sensors is an important topic in NDE and SHM. Previously studied methods using active pitch-catch approaches between any two sensors is well suited for structures such as wind turbine blades that experience significant amounts of noise during operation. The study of these approaches advances the understanding of passive damage detection using reconstructed impulse response functions.

Book Advances in wind turbine blade design and materials

Download or read book Advances in wind turbine blade design and materials written by J. G.Holierhoek and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeroelasticity concerns the interaction between aerodynamics, dynamics and elasticity. This interaction can result in negatively or badly damped wind turbine blade modes, which can have a significant effect on the turbine lifetime. The first aeroelastic problem that occurred on commercial wind turbines concerned a negatively damped edgewise mode. It is important to ensure that there is some out-of-plane deformation in this mode shape to prevent the instability. For larger turbine blades with lower torsional stiffness and the possibility of higher tip speeds for the offshore designs, classical flutter could also become relevant. When designing a wind turbine blade, it is therefore crucial that there is enough damping for the different modes and that there is no coincidence of natural frequencies with excitation frequencies (resonance). An effective aeroelastic analysis is also important, and the tools used for such an analysis must include the necessary detail in the structural model.

Book A Study on Vibration Isolation in a Wind Turbine Subjected to Wind and Seismic Loading

Download or read book A Study on Vibration Isolation in a Wind Turbine Subjected to Wind and Seismic Loading written by Chad Van der Woude and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary loading on wind turbines is in the lateral direction and is of a stochastic nature, due to wind and seismic forces. As turbines grow larger, they experience proportionally larger lateral forces. Large forces require larger section sizes and overall weight of the turbine. The objective of this study is to investigate the use of vibration isolation as a structural control measure to minimize the overall wind and seismic forces transmitted to the turbine. Passive control systems such as tuned mass dampers have previously been proposed to mitigate response to wind loading but have not generally been evaluated under seismic loading. This thesis discusses the potential use of a non-linear vibration isolator just below the wind turbine nacelle to decrease the structural response of the turbine under wind and seismic loading. The structural idealization of the wind turbine structure and the applied loading are presented. The force-displacement properties of the vibration isolator are discussed and the equations of motion are modified to include the isolator. A finite element model is created which includes wind and seismic loading and incorporates a vibration isolator. Simulations are performed to determine a number of key structural response variables without the vibration isolator, and with a vibration isolator having varied force-displacement properties. The changes in those key response variables are presented and discussed. It is concluded that vibration isolation is a viable method for reducing structural response of wind turbines. Some practical concerns and areas of future research are discussed.
