Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have argued about U.S. state development - in particular its laggard social policy and weak institutional capacity - for generations. Neo-institutionalism has informed and enriched these debates, but, as yet, no scholar has reckoned with a very successful and sweeping social policy designed by the federal government: the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, more popularly known as the GI Bill. Kathleen J. Frydl addresses the GI Bill in the first study based on systematic and comprehensive use of the records of the Veterans Administration. Frydl's research situates the Bill squarely in debates about institutional development, social policy and citizenship, and political legitimacy. It demonstrates the multiple ways in which the GI Bill advanced federal power and social policy, and, at the very same time, limited its extent and its effects.

Book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services

Download or read book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Book Veterans Benefits and Care

Download or read book Veterans Benefits and Care written by Mathew H. Bradley and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2009 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides services and benefits to veterans who meet certain eligibility criteria. Benefits to veterans range from disability compensation and pensions to hospital and medical care. Furthermore, veterans' education benefits have evolved substantially over the last 60-plus years. This book reviews the two disability programs administered by the VA, one of which is called the Disability Compensation, and the other which is known as a Disability pension. The authors of this book discuss the eligibility criteria and the fundamentals of these VA-administered disability benefit programs and related issues. The evolution of veterans' education benefit programs are also examined and the types of education benefits made available under these programs are described. Furthermore, the VA administers several pension benefit programs for the surviving spouses and dependent children of veterans. This book describes these programs, including the eligibility criteria and current benefit levels. Other chapters in this book examine the provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act, reflecting the congressional concern about the quality and availability of medical, mental health and dental care services for service members returning from active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is well-known that veterans have a number of risk factors that increase their chance of attempting suicide. This book discusses suicide prevention efforts by the VA. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.
