Book Seawater Reverse Osmosis SWRO Desalination Energy consumption in plants advanced low energy technologies and future developments for improving energy efficiency

Download or read book Seawater Reverse Osmosis SWRO Desalination Energy consumption in plants advanced low energy technologies and future developments for improving energy efficiency written by Seungkwan Hong and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-energy consumption is a critical issue associated with seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination, although the SWRO has been regarded as one of the most energy-efficient processes for seawater desalination. This means that SWRO involves a larger amount of fossil fuel and other energy sources for water production, which imposes a negative impact on the environment such as greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, the high-energy consumption of SWRO should be addressed to minimize environmental impacts and to allow for sustainable exploitation of seawater. However, the recent trend of energy consumption in SWRO seems to have reached a saturation point, which is still higher than theoretical minimum energy. To find new and innovative strategies for lowering current energy consumption, a comprehensive understanding of energy use in SWRO plants from theoretical analysis to actual energy consumption in real SWRO plants is required. This book can provide readers with information about the current state of energy consumption in actual SWRO plants, the fundamental understanding of energy use of SWRO plants from theoretical point of view, and advanced technologies and processes that could be applied for future energy reduction. In addition, this book will offer a detailed methodology for analyzing energy issues in seawater desalination. Through this book, readers will obtain an insight into how to deal with and analyze the energy issues in SWRO desalination.

Book Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Thin Film Composite Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane for Water Desalination

Download or read book Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Thin Film Composite Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane for Water Desalination written by Jacquana T. Diep and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel sequential hexafluoroalcohol (SHFA) membrane composed of a non-substituted aromatic polyamide under-layer and a hexafluoroalcohol-substituted aromatic polyamide top-layer, for the purpose of achieving improved performance in reverse osmosis (RO) desalination, is the major subject of this research study. At 2000 parts per million (ppm) salt solution, the SHFA membrane outperformed the reference (REF) membrane, which was formed by a conventional RO membrane process, in terms of salt rejection. A salt rejection of greater than 99.5% and a flux of greater than 50 liters/m2/h (LMH) were obtained at 400 psi and 25°C operating conditions. Either 2 or 3 min HFA-MDA reaction time could be used to process the SHFA membrane to achieve this performance. Results from the analyses of the REF membrane and SHFA membrane using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and a contact angle measurement tool were used to compare the two membranes' surface morphology. In addition to the SHFA membrane, works involving incorporation of nanocomposite particles onto the RO membranes for performance improvement are covered. The latest findings from this research led to the introduction of a porous nanoparticle (PNP) membrane whose low particle loadings (ranges from 0.01% to 0.05% weight-to-volume) were found to enhance water flux while retaining high salt rejection.

Book Osmotically Driven Membrane Processes

Download or read book Osmotically Driven Membrane Processes written by Hongbo Du and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osmotically driven membrane processes (ODMPs) including forward osmosis (FO) and pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) have attracted increasing attention in fields such as water treatment, desalination, power generation, and life science. In contrast to pressure-driven membrane processes, e.g., reverse osmosis, which typically employs applied high pressure as driving force, ODMPs take advantages of naturally generated osmotic pressure as the sole source of driving force. In light of this, ODMPs possess many advantages over pressure-driven membrane processes. The advantages include low energy consumption, ease of equipment maintenance, low capital investment, high salt rejection, and high water flux. In the past decade, over 300 academic papers on ODMPs have been published in a variety of application fields. The number of such publications is still rapidly growing. The ODMPs' approach, fabrications, recent development and applications in wastewater treatment, power generation, seawater desalination, and gas absorption are presented in this book.

Book Reverse Osmosis Membrane Research

Download or read book Reverse Osmosis Membrane Research written by H. Lonsdale and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Th i s book had its orl gl n in the sympos i urn on "Polymers for Desalination" sponsored by the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and held in September, 1971 in Wash ington D. C. at the 162nd national meeting of the Society. However, the book is not simply the proceedings of that symposium. A num ber of additional papers were contributed by other workers in the field, and the original papers presented at the symposium have, for the most part, been expanded. The book thus represents a broad cross section of membrane research and development activities in the United States and abroad within the field of reverse osmosis. The purposes of the book are to bring attention to important new developments in this field, to suggest what the next generation of reverse osmosis equipment may look like, and to indicate where fur ther research and development are needed. The vast majority of the papers collected here represent work supported by the Office of Saline Water of the United States Department of the Interior, and the emphasis here is clearly on the application of the reverse os mosis process to water purification. However, many of the concepts, methods, and conclusions are expected to be useful in other areas of membrane science and technology.
