Book The Faculties of the Human Mind and the Case of Moral Feeling in Kant s Philosophy

Download or read book The Faculties of the Human Mind and the Case of Moral Feeling in Kant s Philosophy written by Antonino Falduto and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades a remarkable change occurred in Kant scholarship: the "other" Kant has been discovered, i.e. the one of the doctrine of virtue and the anthropology. Through the rediscovery of Kant's investigations into the empirical and sensuous aspects of knowledge, our understanding of Kant's philosophy has been enriched by an important element that has allowed researchers to correct supposed deficiencies in Kant's work. In addition, further questions concerning the nature of Kant's philosophy itself have been formulated: the more the "other" Kant comes to the fore, the stronger the question concerning the connection between pure philosophy and empirical investigation becomes. The aim of this study is to show that the psychological and anthropological interpretations of Kant's pure philosophy are not convincing and at the same time to illustrate some connections between his critical and anthropological investigations by means of an analysis of the theory of the faculties. Against both a "transcendental psychological" and an "anthropological" reading, the book presents Kant's theory of the faculties as a constitutive part of his critical philosophy and shows that there is a close connection between Kant's pure philosophy and his moral aesthetic.

Book Critique of Judgment

Download or read book Critique of Judgment written by Immanuel Kant and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Immanuel Kant’s 1790 "Critique of Judgement" in modern American English with the original German in the back for reference. This is Volume IX in the Complete Works of Immanuel Kant from Livraria Press. "Herewith I end my whole critical business" Kant states in the preface to his third and final Critique in his core triad of critical philosophical treatises. In his old age, he turned from being Polemic to being prescriptive in his vision for a future of transcendental, rational morality. Here he recaps his whole critical system and breaks out his final thoughts between a Critique of Aesthetic and Teleological Judgment. Between Pure Reason (theoretical) and Practical Reason (law and ethics) stands the mediating Power of Judgement which recognizes the particular in the general and bridges the chasm between sensuality and morality, nature and freedom, manifesting itself to the senses. Kant's Teleological, dialectal understanding of the experience of art is still used today in Modern art theory. His analysis of sublimity as "disinterested pleasure" as an aesthetic experience between the dynamics of the cognitive faculties of sensuality and rationality, creates a paradox of judgment as both subjective and universal. To Kant, the correct recognition of what beauty is, and responding to it authentically (morally), is vital to his entire project.

Book Reception Of Scottish Enlight Germany

Download or read book Reception Of Scottish Enlight Germany written by Heiner F. Klemme and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2000-11-15 with total page 3295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish philosophy had a decisive impact in the 18th century, not only on the English-speaking world but also on the Enlightment in central Europe. That impact was perhaps most greatly felt in Germany, where the advancement of Scottish moral sense philosophy, Hume's Scepticism and Common Sense philosophy was marked by a series of important translations. Six of the most significant texts, most of them very rare today, are reprinted here. Although some of the works by Scottish philosophers were known and discussed before the death of Christian Wolff, their importance increased considerably after the decline of German school metaphysics around the middle of the century. English at that time was less widely known, so the German editions became highly influential. The translations were often by important German Enlightenment thinkers and philosophers such as Lessing and Christian Garve, and several were provided with interesting introductions and commentaries by their translators and editions. In the case of Hume's first "Enquiry", the editor Johann Georg Sulzer, an adherent of Wolffian metaphysics, commented extensively on Hume's philosophy. It was this translation that famously woke Kant from his "dogmatic slumber".

Book Karl Leonhard Reinhold and the Enlightenment

Download or read book Karl Leonhard Reinhold and the Enlightenment written by George di Giovanni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-24 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Leonhard Reinhold (1757-1823) is a complex figure of the late German Enlightenment. Sometime Catholic priest and active Mason even when still a cleric in Vienna; early disciple of Kant and the first to try to reform the Critique of Reason; influential teacher and prolific author; astute commentator on the immediate post-Kantian scene; and at all times convinced propagandist of the Enlightenment––in all these roles Reinhold reflected his age but also tested the limits of the values that had inspired it. This collection of essays, originally presented at an international workshop held in Montreal in 2007, conveys this multifaceted figure of Reinhold in all its details. In the four themes that run across the contributions––the historicity of reason; the primacy of moral praxis; the personalism of religious belief; and the transformation of classical metaphysics into phenomenology of mind––Reinhold is presented as a catalyst of nineteenth century thought but also as one who remained bound to intellectual prejudices that were typical of the Enlightenment and, for this reason, as still the representative of a past age. The volume contains the text of two hitherto unpublished Masonic speeches by Reinhold, and a description of recently recovered transcripts of student lecture notes dating to Reinhold’s early Jena period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Welche 1 Vgl.
