Book Native Plants for New England Gardens

Download or read book Native Plants for New England Gardens written by Mark Richardson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native plants are drought tolerant, disease resistant, wildlife friendly, and environmentally sound. Experts increasingly encourage gardeners to use natives exclusively. This handy and practical guide focuses on 100 great native flowers, ground covers, shrubs, ferns, and grasses that will thrive in New England gardens. The presentation is aimed at gardeners, who want concise, practical information. It will also include material on the importance and desirability of using native plants. The heart of this book is 100 two-page spreads, one for each species. The spreads will include facts about the plant of use to a gardener (not a botanist)—where it grows best, when it blooms, the soil conditions in which it thrives, its appeal to wildlife, sunlight requirements, how high it grows, how to propagate it, and how to avoid any problems particular to the species. Each spread will also feature two color photos.

Book New Flora of Vermont

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur V. Gilman
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015-11-18
  • ISBN : 9780893275167
  • Pages : 614 pages

Download or read book New Flora of Vermont written by Arthur V. Gilman and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vermont is a small and, by any standard, a well-botanized state---beginning with a list of Vermont's trees and other economic plants in 1795, continuing through four editions of the Flora of Vermont, up to the summary Check List of Vermont Plants by the Vermont Botanical Club in 1973. Why the New Flora of Vermont? So many advances in the last 40 years warrant striking out anew: taxonomic advances have resulted from the wave of molecular data since the discovery of DNA and the powerful analytical technique of cladistics, there has been an increase in floristic knowledge of Vermont's local flora in the intervening decades; and an emphasis on potential threats to indigenous flora, e.g., by invasive species, has added several new items. In this up-to-date volume, Art Gilman strikes out anew, following recent advances and current thinking, while contributing to Vermont's long and significant botanical heritage.

Book Flora of Vermont

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vermont Botanical Club
  • Publisher : Forgotten Books
  • Release : 2016-10-19
  • ISBN : 9781334006906
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book Flora of Vermont written by Vermont Botanical Club and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Vermont: List of Ferns and Seed Plants Growing Without Cultivation In the present catalogue all names Of species, varieties, and formae are printed in boldface type; and for two special reasons this list follows the nomenclature of the revised Gray Manual. First, the great majority of the members of the Vermont Botanical Club use this manual, as more convenient to handle and less expensive than the Illustrated Flora; and secondly, the committee believe, that, what ever might be their personal opinion when these two authorities differ regarding the proper name for a species, it would be confusing and obtrusive to follow now the one authority and now the other. They therefore decided to continue the practice adopted in the former edition, and when the two authorities give different names, to print after the Gray Manual name the Britton and Brown name in paren thesis, and to include all such synonyms in the index. Unfortunately these synonyms, as may be seen by comparing the two editions of the Vermont Flora, are far more numerous in the second edition than in the first; so that the proposed efforts at uniformity have not as yet met with marked success. Book The Humane Gardener

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nancy Lawson
  • Publisher : Chronicle Books
  • Release : 2017-04-18
  • ISBN : 1616896175
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book The Humane Gardener written by Nancy Lawson and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.
