Book excerpt: Unlike earlier investigations on the changes Biblical Hebrew underwent over the ages, this study does not attempt to draw a broad picture encompassing various kinds of linguistic phenomena. The work stresses the need for a well-founded statistical and form-oriented methodology for the description of historical linguistic change in the Hebrew Bible. With the aid of computer techniques the book concentrates on one major aspect of Biblical Hebrew, viz. the verbal tense forms. It examines the absolute and relative frequencies of these data in the books of Samuel, Kings and Chronicles in a comprehensive manner. In this way some of the established opinions concerning increase or decrease in the use of certain tense forms are confirmed, others contradicted, and new evidence is adduced. In addition to the statistical analyses, Verbs & Numbers contains a complete inventory of the parallel passages where Chronicles has another tense form than the Vorlage. This makes it a valuable source of information for the interpretation of the book of Chronicles.

Book Verb and Noun Number in English

Download or read book Verb and Noun Number in English written by Wallis Hoch Reid and published by London ; New York : Longman. This book was released on 1991 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents an account of the principles shaping the morphological form of the verb. This book aims to exemplify contemporary linguistic theory. The analysis proceeds from the view that the structure of language is determined by its function as an instrument of human communication. This position breaks with sentence-based theory to return to Saussurean conception of a language as an inventory of signs. It expands the programmatic Saussurean picture by emphasizing the pervasive influence of general human psychological characteristics on both linguistic structure and language use. In contrast to sentence-based theory, sign-based theory contains no formal component of syntactic rules. It must re-characterize linguistic structure in functional, not syntactic terms.

Book Verbs and Diachronic Syntax

Download or read book Verbs and Diachronic Syntax written by I.G. Roberts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines several strands of my work, both individually and in collaboration with various people, over the last couple of years. To a very large extent, I have been inspired by the many talks, classes, appointments and other interactions that took place in the exciting intellectual environ ment that grew up among the linguists working in Geneva in the period 1989-90. It is impossible to mention by name everyone who influenced the devel opment of this material, but I'd particularly like to thank the students in my class 'linguistique diachronique' during that period, who had to suffer through preliminary versions of much of this book, and often seemed to understand what I was getting at better than I did. Luigi Rizzi did more than anyone else to create the unique atmosphere here in the last couple of years, and so he deserves our gratitude for that; he was also my collaborator on the synchronic work on French inversion that inspired much of this book; he also read the whole manuscript in draft form and gave detailed comments; he is also, as anyone working in current comparative syntax knows, a wellspring of knowledge, ideas and inspiration. Maria-Teresa Guasti also read the entire manuscript and gave me invaluable comments. Sten Vikner was a great help, for much more than just Danish data. Special thanks also to Adriana Belletti, Anna Cardinaletti, Liliane Haegeman and Cecilia Poletto.

Book The Regularity of the Irregular Verbs and Nouns in English

Download or read book The Regularity of the Irregular Verbs and Nouns in English written by Elena Even-Simkin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an in-depth study of the so-called irregular Past Tense (sing/sang) and Noun Plural (foot/feet) forms with Internal Vowel Alternation (IVA) in English demonstrating that they possess both a fixed phonological and semantic regularity. The innovative sign-oriented analysis and inductive methodology employed in this study are further supported by additional first language acquisition data, experimental studies and historical evidence. The data culled from multiple linguistic anthologies, dictionaries and thesauri have shown that although the IVA process comprises a relatively small number of nominal and verbal forms in Modern English, IVA, originally, was a prevalent and productive process in Old English, Indo-European and other language families. The results of this empirical study present and introduce a novel classification based on the regular and systematic iconic-phonological and semantic nature of all these diverse IVA processes both nominal and verbal that has been maintained throughout the history of English.
