Book Field Volcanology A Tribute to the Distinguished Career of Don Swanson

Download or read book Field Volcanology A Tribute to the Distinguished Career of Don Swanson written by Michael P. Poland and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Swanson, who received the GSA Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Division's Distinguished Geologic Career award in 2016, has adopted a detailed, field-oriented approach to studying problems of great volcanologic importance across a range of compositions and spatio-temporal scales. Swanson's work has resulted in a series of fundamental contributions that have advanced understanding of the Columbia River flood basalts, Cascade volcanic arc, and Hawai'i, and his insights have been applied not only around the world, but across the solar system. This volume emphasizes the role of field volcanology as a window into better understanding volcanic processes past and present, and highlights, in particular, those places and processes where Swanson's insights have been particularly impactful.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Volcanoes written by Haraldur Sigurdsson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1999-10-23 with total page 1442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanoes are unquestionably one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring features of the physical world. Our paradoxical fascination with them stems from their majestic beauty and powerful, if sometimes deadly, destructiveness. Notwithstanding the tremendous advances in volcanology since ancient times, some of the mystery surrounding volcanic eruptions remains today. The Encyclopedia of Volcanoes summarizes our present knowledge of volcanoes. Through its thematic organization around the melting of the earth, it provides a comprehensive source of information on the multidisciplinary influences of volcanic eruptions--both the destructive as well as the beneficial aspects. The majority of the chapters focus on the geoscience-related aspects of volcanism (radioactive heat source, melting rock, ascent of magma, surface phenomena associated with exiting magma, extraterrestrial volcanism, etc.). In addition, complementary chapters discuss the multidisciplinary aspects of volcanism; these include the history of volcanology, geothermal energy resources, interaction with the oceans and atmosphere, health aspects of volcanism, mitigation of volcanic disasters, post-eruption ecology, and the impact of eruptions on organismal biodiversity. In addition to its appeal to educators, students, and professional and amateur scientists, the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes functions as an important information resource for administrators and officials responsible for developing and implementing volcanic hazard mitigation around the world. * The first and only reference work to cover all aspects of volcanology* More than 80 separate peer-reviewed articles--all original contributions by leading authors from major institutions of science around the world, commissioned for this work* An integrated transition from the volcanic process through hazards, risk, and societal impacts, with an emphasis on how volcanoes have influenced and shaped society* Convenient single-volume format with topics arranged thematically--articles provide coverage of nine different aspects of volcanology* Each entry in the Encyclopedia begins with an outline of the article content and a concise definition of the subject of the article* 3,000 Glossary entries explain key terms* Further Reading lists appear at the end of each entry* Extensive cross-referencing system links related articles* Sixteen pages of color will convey the science and excitement of this often violent phenomena * Large 8 1/2" x 11" page size, easy-to-read double-column format

Book The SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP WITHIN FIELDS OF SHIELD VOLCANOES AND HOW THEY COMPARE ON THE EARTH VENUS AND THE MOON

Download or read book The SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP WITHIN FIELDS OF SHIELD VOLCANOES AND HOW THEY COMPARE ON THE EARTH VENUS AND THE MOON written by Kelly Shockey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I investigated the spatial distributions of volcanic vents within fields of shield volcanoes on the Moon and Venus and compared them to the spatial distributions of fields of monogenic basaltic shield volcanoes on Earth. I chose the terrestrial fields (Springerville Volcanic Field, AZ; Snake River Plain, ID; and San Francisco Peaks Volcanic Field, AZ) because these are well studied and well constrained volcanic fields. All three of these fields have known alignments and/or faults that drive the distribution of the vent locations. I investigated the only known volcanic fields on the Moon: the Marius Hills, Gruithuisen Domes, and Rümker Hills. On the surface of Venus, shield fields are the most abundant type of volcanic feature. In selecting 4 of these fields (0°N 216°E, 2°N 315°E, 8°N 79°E, and 78°S 43°E), I considered the overall size of the field (
