Book Venice and Its Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Venice and Its Art Classic Reprint written by Harry Huntington Powers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice and Its Art The present work is in a sense the continuation of an undertaking which began with the publication of the Art Of Florence in 1912. It was intended from the be ginning to cover briefly the art Of the Italian Renaissance in two volumes, a plan now tardily realized after many and prolonged interruptions. The present volume differs from its predecessor in that more attention is given to the city itself, to its history as a key to the understand ing Of its art and to its own growth and physical trans formation as a work Of art in itself. This is in line with the growing feeling Of the writer that art is an expression of the spiritual and cultural life of a people and that their history is the key to its interpretation. The purpose of the book will be Clear to those who are familiar with the earlier volume or with the author's work in the galleries Of Europe. The book is not a record Of personal research. N O archives have been ransacked, no records discovered, no manuscripts edited or read. Information regarding the works here dis cussed is to be found in any good library. Nor has any attempt been made to make the list Of works inclusive or to give all known facts regarding them. The works considered have been chosen as being representative of the artists in question and illustrative of the characteristics discussed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice Empire, was, that they secured freedom of trade and intercourse within its vast boundaries. They knew how to obtain the same rights from the Italian Empire of the German emperors, and when the second millenium dawned, Venice was already considered a flourishing commercial state, richer than all her neighbours. The Doge Pietro Orseolo II., the fried of the young German Emperor Otho III., established factories and ports all along the Italian coast. The Roman coast-towns of Dalmatia, from Zara to Ragusa, rendered him homage. He was rightly conscious of being Lord of the Adriatic and expressed this feeling symbolically by an imposing and beautiful ceremony. Every year on Ascension day, he - and after him the later Doges - went to sea in a magnificently decorated boat (the Bucentoro) and celebrated his espousal of the Adriatic by throwing a golden ring into the waters. Not that the rule over Dalmatia had then by any means been assured, or even after the Byzan tine emperor had formally ceded Istria and Dalmatia to the Doge in 1074. The Venetians were, on the contrary, constantly forced to struggle against the rivalry of the Hungarians, and only enjoyed the undisputed possession of the East coast of the Adriatic after the time of the crusades. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice as an Art City How it soars aloft! Slender and yet imposing in solitary grandeur, unsupported by any other building an island like Venice herself. It was commenced in the tenth century, when Venice had already been for six generations a sea power under her Doges. We ascend, and stand amazed at the be wilderingly beautiful and, at the same time, quaint panorama of the Island City. Gradually we begin to perceive how this pile-supported city and sea-fortress, inaccessible to the mail-clad land-rats of the Lombard, Frankish, and German hordes, was marked by destiny to become a bridge between the lands of the North and the South - the most renowned trade-centre, as well as the headquarters Of shipping and finance, in the Middle Ages; how she also became the treasure-house into which the riches Of three continents poured, and became converted into springs of luxury and wealth. Download or read book Venetian Discourses Drawn from the History Art Customs of Venice Classic Reprint written by Alexander Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venetian Discourses, Drawn From the History, Art Customs of Venice Venice was the most stable, the most peace ful, the most prosperous, and the longest lived Republic the world has ever seen. Through many an age in the mid-sea she dwelt, From her retreat calmly contemplating The changes of the Earth, herself unchanged. A scene of light and glory, a dominion That has endured the longest among men. Such being the case, nothing, I think, could be more Opposed to reason and to probability than the notion, too commonly entertained, that she; owed her superlative greatness to a policy and to practices that savoured of piracy and pillage, of tyranny and injustice, of cruelty and oppression. And, from my own study of Venice and Venetian history, I am prepared to say that no notion could be more opposed to truth and to fact The more I know of the old Venetians, the more I feel called upon to admire not only their marvel lous energy and industry, their perseverance.
