Book excerpt: The idea of the organization of a Symposium on Spiral Structure came at a special meeting of Commission 33 on Spiral Structure during the 12th General Assembly of the IAU in Prague, 1967. So much interest was shown during this meeting that one of us proposed a special Symposium on the 'Spiral Structure of Our Galaxy' for 1969. The response was immediate and it was finally agreed upon holding the Symposium in Basel, a center of galactic research in the center of Europe. During the next months a special 'List of Problems', related to this Symposium, was sent to many prospective participants by the president of Commission 33. This stimulated an increase of interest in problems of galactic spiral structure and a con centrated effort on some problems. The organizing Committee of the Symposium was composed of Drs. L. Woltjer (president), W. Becker, A. Blaauw, B. J. Bok, G. Contopoulos, F. J. Kerr, C. C. Lin, S. W. McCuskey and S. B. Pikel'ner. Most of the work for the organization of the Symposium was carried by Dr. L. W oltjer. The Local Committee, composed of Drs. W. Becker, U. W. Steinlin, R. P. Fenkart, and G. A. Tammann, made every effort to secure the success of the Symposium. Most of the credit goes to Dr. Steinlin. The Symposium was supported financially by the IAU and by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The meetings took place at the University of Basel, which provided also secretarial help and many other facilities.

Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 18 contains literature published in 1976 and received before March 1, 1977; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.

Book excerpt: 'Galactic Radio Astronomy' was chosen as the subject of this Symposium, which was held in conjunction with the IAU General Assembly that took place in Sydney in August 1973, largely because it is a very suitable Southern Hemisphere topic. This results in part from the advantages of a southern location in studying the Galaxy and in part from the long association of Australia with radio astronomy. Following the General Assembly, the Symposium was held at the Surf air Inter national Hotel in Maroochydore, Queensland, from 3 to 7 September, 1973. The conference participants were effectively isolated from the rest of the world during the Symposium, and the excellent spring weather and geographical situation led to the development of an unusually good rapport. The Symposium was sponsored by Commissions 40, 33, and 34. The Organizing Committee was composed of A. H. Barrett (chairman), J. E. Baldwin, D. S. Heeschen, F. J. Kerr, J. Lequeux, S. W. McCuskey, P. G. Mezger, B. Y. Mills, Yu. N. Parijskij, B. J. Robinson, H. van der Laan, and H. F. Weaver. The Local Committee, consisting ofB. J. Robinson, N. G. Seddon, and P. J. Kelly, looked after the arrangements in very fine style. The Symposium was supported financially by the IAU, the Australian Academy o~ Science, the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics, Union Carbide Australia Limited, and the Science Foundation for Physics within the University of Sydney.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary layer transition and turbulence have been described as being comprised of smaller structures called turbulent spots. Many researchers have obtained ensemble averaged velocity measurements in the transition region and some attempts have been made to obtain instantaneous information. Ensemble averaging can predict the overall scales of the flow field but it fails to yield information on the flow physics of the substructures within the spot. To facilitate investigation of these flow features and to establish the spot's relationship with transition or turbulence, an experimental method to obtain instantaneous full velocity profiles has been developed. The qualitative hydrogen bubble technique of flow visualization has been augmented to yield quantitative unsteady boundary layer information. The technique has been advanced by incorporating digital image processing of videotaped boundary layer flow. The method was verified by direct comparison with a laser Doppler anemometer and an analytical uncertainty analysis was performed. The technique compared well against the LDA, in both steady and unsteady flows. Recommendations were made for effective use of this technique and for further development.

Book excerpt: This book was conceived to commemorate the continuing success of the guest observer program for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite observatory. It is also hoped that this volume will serve as a useful tutorial for those pursuing research in related fields with future space observatories. As the IUE has been the product of the three-way collaboration between the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), European Space Agency (ESA) and the British Engineering and Research Council (SERC), so is this book the fruit of the collaboration of the American and European participants in the IUE. As such, it is a testimony to timely international cooperation and sharing of resources that open up new possibilities. The IUE spacecraft was launched on the 26th of January in 1978 into a geosynchronous orbit over the Atlantic Ocean. The scientific operations of the IUE are performed for 16 hours a day from Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, U.S.A, and for 8 hours a day from ESA Villafranca Satellite Tracking Station near Madrid, Spain.

It is supposed to contain what was actually reported and discussed, though it does this, one hopes, in a polished and organized way. A sense of actuality, a reporting quality, makes this book different from a collection of review papers as, for example, a book in the series on Stars and Stellar Systems. All Invited Reports have been included as the Reporters wrote them. The Editor's task has been restricted to improving the presentation, a process which in most cases involved only minor revisions. In a few Reports the Editor did some heavy rewriting; in those cases he checked with the Reporters. Obviously a different course had to be taken with respect to the Discussions. They were recorded on tape, transcribed verbatim and then passed back to the discussants. After the discussants returned their versions, the Editor rearranged and condensed the texts and made a considerable effort to provide references. (Unfortunately he was not able to locate all relevant Russian papers from 1968 and 1969. ) The Editor takes the responsibility for mistakes made in this process, which may have produced occasionally his own 'mix-master Universe'. Actually only a few discussion remarks were rejected, more often because of incomprehensibility, rather than because the remark was far from the subject of the Symposium, or was too long, or was too trivial. A few very long remarks have been condensed and put at the end of a Discussion.
