Book excerpt: Excerpt from Veiled Women "If good the news, O bird, alight and welcome; If bad, draw up thy claws and hie away!" At the corner of a lofty housetop overlooking a great part of Cairo, a woman stood with arms uplifted and solemnly addressed a crow which seemed about to settle. The bird, as if the meaning of the chant had reached him, turned in the air with clumsy flapping, and withdrew, rising to join the hundreds of his kind which circled high above the city bathed in early sunlight. The woman shook her fist at his receding shape, glass bracelets tinkling on her strong brown arm. She sighed, "The curse of God on thy religion, O thou faithless messenger!" then, with a laugh, turned round to join the group of slave-girls, her companions, sent up to lay out herbs to dry upon the roof. These had watched her invocation of the crow with knowing grins. But one, a young Circassian, who sat watching while the others worked, betrayed surprise and asked the meaning of the little ceremony. At that there was much giggling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Veiled Lady and Other Men and Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Veiled Lady and Other Men and Women Classic Reprint written by Francis Hopkinson Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Veiled Lady and Other Men and Women To my Readers: This collection of stories has been labelled "The Veiled Lady" as being the easiest way out of a dilemma; and yet the title may be misleading. While, beyond doubt, there is between these covers a most charming and lovable Houri, to whom the nightingales sing lullabies, there can also be found a surpassingly beautiful Venetian whose love affairs upset a Quarter, a common-sense, motherly nurse whose heart warmed toward her companion in the adjoining berth, a plucky New England girl with the courage of her convictions, and a prim spinster whose only consolation was the boarder who sat opposite. Nor does the list by any means end here. Rough sea-dogs, with friendly feelings toward other dogs, crop up, as well as brave Titans who make derricks of their arms and fender-piles of their bodies. Here, too, are skinny, sun-dried Excellencies with a taste for revolutions, well-groomed club swells with a taste for adventure and cocktails, not to mention half a dozen gay, rollicking Bohemians with a taste for everything that came their way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Veiled Women: Some Wanderings in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco F OR days I crossed a land of drifting sand and scorching sun, and now I have reached the oasis, Where water gurgles and palm-trees grow and the Arab town of bou-saada rests by a river. Bou-saada means the Place of Happiness - and happy it is to the travel-racked man to let aching eyes fall on the green of the gardens. It is a mother-earth town of the drab tint of sun-baked bricks, the houses square-faced but bulg ing, and scarcely a Window in the place. The thin, shadow-soaked streets are drunken. A bit of the town the French Officials and traders have taken to themselves and made liveable. The native town is, in design and appearance, much what a child of four would make if given a barrow-load of mud! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ring and the Veil, Vol. 2 of 3: A Novel But there was one considerable drawback to the satisfaction I experienced. Without revealing any name, I had confided to Wilmot Smith the secret of my happiness; but instead of congratulating me, as I expected, he became very grave - I should rather say, very sad. Lecturing people in such cases, he observed, is, I am aware, of no use; but you have taken a very false step, Rivers, indeed I may almost say a fatal step, for you have rendered yourself responsible for that woman's future, and you know very well, that if her husband were to discover your attachment and desert her, she might absolutely be brought to want a morsel of bread. I say this, he continued, because I fully believe you love the woman, Whoever she may be. If I could think otherwise, our friendship would at once be at an end. Book Do Muslim Women Need Saving

Download or read book Do Muslim Women Need Saving written by Lila Abu-Lughod and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequent reports of honor killings, disfigurement, and sensational abuse have given rise to a consensus in the West, a message propagated by human rights groups and the media: Muslim women need to be rescued. Lila Abu-Lughod boldly challenges this conclusion. An anthropologist who has been writing about Arab women for thirty years, she delves into the predicaments of Muslim women today, questioning whether generalizations about Islamic culture can explain the hardships these women face and asking what motivates particular individuals and institutions to promote their rights. In recent years Abu-Lughod has struggled to reconcile the popular image of women victimized by Islam with the complex women she has known through her research in various communities in the Muslim world. Here, she renders that divide vivid by presenting detailed vignettes of the lives of ordinary Muslim women, and showing that the problem of gender inequality cannot be laid at the feet of religion alone. Poverty and authoritarianism—conditions not unique to the Islamic world, and produced out of global interconnections that implicate the West—are often more decisive. The standard Western vocabulary of oppression, choice, and freedom is too blunt to describe these women's lives. Do Muslim Women Need Saving? is an indictment of a mindset that has justified all manner of foreign interference, including military invasion, in the name of rescuing women from Islam—as well as a moving portrait of women's actual experiences, and of the contingencies with which they live.

Book Behind the Veil in Persia and Turkish Arabia

Download or read book Behind the Veil in Persia and Turkish Arabia written by M. E. Hume-Griffith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Behind the Veil in Persia and Turkish Arabia: An Account of an Englishwoman's Eight Years Residence Amongst the Women of the East I have endeavoured in this book to give some account of that inner life of the East of which a traveller, however keen-sighted and intelligent, seldom gains more than a passing glimpse. In a residence of eight years in Persia and Turkish Arabia I have become intimate with a large circle of friends whose life is passed behind the veil, and as the wife of a medical missionary I have had unusual opportunities of winning their confidence and becoming acquainted with their thoughts. Of direct missionary effort I have said very little, but I hope that the picture I have given may arouse interest in lives spent amongst surroundings so different from our own. It is impossible for 'any one, however unversed in politics, who has lived so long in Mesopotamia, not to be deeply interested in the future of the country. While all Europe has been filled with astonishment at the bloodless revolution in Turkey, we who have become familiar with its inner life are touched with a feeling of admiration and something akin to awe. Whatever misgivings there may be as to the permanence of this reformation we h0pe and trust that it will endure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church.
