Book excerpt: The internationally acclaimed author of the L.A. Quartet and The Underworld USA Trilogy, James Ellroy, presents another literary noir masterpiece of historical paranoia. In this savagely audacious novel, James Ellroy plants a pipe bomb under the America in the 1960s, lights the fuse, and watches the shrapnel fly. On November 22, 1963 three men converge in Dallas. Their job: to clean up the JFK hit’s loose ends and inconvenient witnesses. They are Wayne Tedrow, Jr., a Las Vegas cop with family ties to the lunatic right; Ward J. Littell, a defrocked FBI man turned underworld mouthpiece; and Pete Bondurant, a dope-runner and hit-man who serves as the mob’s emissary to the anti-Castro underground. It goes bad from there. For the next five years these night-riders run a whirlwind of plots and counter-plots: Howard Hughes’s takeover of Vegas, J. Edgar Hoover’s war against the civil rights movement, the heroin trade in Vietnam, and the murders of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. Wilder than L. A. Confidential, more devastating than American Tabloid, The Cold Six Thousand establishes Ellroy as one of our most fearless novelists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Las Vegas in Singapore looks at the collision of the histories of Singapore and Las Vegas in the form of Marina Bay Sands, one of Singapore's two integrated resorts. The first history begins in colonial Singapore in the 1880s, when British administrators revised gambling laws in response to the political threat posed by Chinese-run gambling syndicates. Following the tracks of these punitive laws and practices, the book moves into the 1960s when the newly independent city-state created a national lottery while criminalizing both organized and petty gambling in the name of nation-building. The second history shifts the focus to corporate Las Vegas in the 1950s when digital technology and corporate management practices found each other on the casino floor. Tracing the emergence of the specialist casino designer, the book reveals how casino development evolved into a highly rationalized spatial template designed to maximize profits. Today an iconic landmark of Singapore, Marina Bay Sands is also an artifact of these two histories, an attempt by Singapore to normalize what was once criminalized in its nationalist history. Lee Kah-Wee argues that the historical project of the control of vice is also about the control of space and capital. The result is an uneven landscape where the legal and moral status of gambling is contingent on where it is located. As the current wave of casino expansion spreads across Asia, he warns that these developments should not be seen as liberalization but instead as a continuation of the project of concentrating power by modern states and corporations.

Book Beneath Rock Bottom

Book excerpt: KIANTONE: Chautauqua County's Mystical Valley invites the reader into a vibrant 19th Century community that impacted Western New York, Indiana, New Orleans, Washington, DC, and Europe. This readable book, part local history and part personal narrative, is extensively researched and often tickles the funny bone as well. Each chapter is designed to function like a quilt block. Thus, the Seneca Indians, early settlers, Congregationalists, Unitarians, abolitionists, Spiritualists, Civil War soldiers, and the stories of other Kiantone residents are examined in detail. Pieced together, these historical blocks become a literary signature quilt offering a panoramic record of Kiantone's history and peoples. Those familiar with Chautauqua County's other Spiritualist center, Lily Dale, founded in 1879, will enjoy the exploration of Kiantone's Spiritualist community, Harmonia, founded in 1853. The book sheds new light on Harmonia's connections with Patriot, Indiana and New Orleans, Louisiana. The author also reveals previously undocumented information about the saga of this unique communitarian group that formed around issues such as the Abolition Movement, Women's Suffrage, and the Free Love Movement. Mystical questions, such as how unique geography affects the human soul, are explored in the context of this very special and seemingly sacred place. Sprinkled throughout the book are suggestions for further genealogy studies and other history research projects that will intrigue and beckon middle and high school teachers, college professors, and both professional and amateur historians. It also contains a detailed bibliography that will prove helpful to both readers and researchers. KIANTONE: Chautauqua's Mystical Valley \s designed to encourage more study and more enjoyment of this rich historical saga.

Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive interviews with the accused herself, here is the sordid, twisted, and surprising story of Brookey Lee West—a successful technical writer from Silicon Valley who became Las Vegas’ most notorious female serial killer. In February, 2001, police uncovered the decomposed remains of Christine Smith bagged like garbage in a Las Vegas storage unit. She’d been dead for years. Next to the makeshift tomb were books on witchcraft and Satanism. It didn’t take long for authorities to discover that the owner of the foul Canyon Gate Unit #317 was Christine’s own daughter, Brookey Lee West. Further investigation revealed something even more shocking—a one-woman crime spree that spanned two decades, stretched from Nevada to California, and may have counted among its victims Brookey’s own husband and brother....

Book Neon Metropolis

Download or read book Neon Metropolis written by Hal Rothman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the Previous Edition (0 415 92612 2): ...lively and provocative...this book will teach you something startling on nearly every page... --The New York Times Book Review Like the Emerald City, Las Vegas glitters brightly in the vast Nevada desert, a haven for refugees from ordinary America. A hip, iconic, playground that exports nothing, it nonetheless earns billions from consumer services alone -- gambling, hotels, gaming, and entertainment. It is, historian Hal Rothman argues, the quintessential city of the future. As other cities try to mirror its success and huge, respectable corporations like Coca-Cola invest in a piece of the pie, the very traits that have ostracized Las Vegas in the past -- hedonism, money worship, and permissiveness -- have today made it America's fastest growing urban center. From the gambling-driven, mob-run Sin City of the 1940s to the corporatization of the Strip as a respectable family entertainment center after the 1970s, Las Vegas has shown incredible economic resilience and adaptability. The first full account of America's new dream capital, Neon Metropolis brilliantly shows how Las Vegas gambled on the post-industrial service economy well before the rest of the country knew it was coming, and won.
