Download or read book Advaita Ved nta written by Eliot Deutsch and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advaita Vedānta is the most important philosophical system in India. It involves a discipline of spiritual experience as well as a technical philosophy, and since the time of Samkara in the ninth century some of the greatest intellects in India have contributed to its development. In his reconstruction of Advaita Vedānta, Eliot Deutsch has lifted the system out of its historical/cultural context and has concentrated attention on those ideas which have enduring philosophical value. He has sought to formulate systematically one's understanding of what is of universal philosophical interest in Vedantic thought. Professor Deutsch's work covers the basic metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical ideas of Vedānta. Students and scholars of Western as well as of Indian philosophy will be interested in the lucid, organized manner in which the material is presented and in the fresh interpretations given. The book is written in a critical rather than simply "pious" spirit and should thus also be of interest to anyone interested in deepening his or her appreciation and understanding of the richness of Indian thought.

Book The Vedanta Philosophy of Sankaracharya

Download or read book The Vedanta Philosophy of Sankaracharya written by Charles Johnston and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sankaracharya is, for me, the greatest of all Masters of the Mind; he has, indeed, conquered and circumvented the mind at every turning, making a slave, nay, even a most effective servant and ally of that power which, for so many teachers, has bee ceaselessly reprobated, as the Slayer of the Real. Sankara has shown how to draw the grains of gold from the matrix of the mind, to make the mind the door-keeper of the soul."-Charles Johnston This is a taste of the high praise which Charles Johnston gives to the great Sankaracharya. He did not merely view him as a religious reformer, but as a high philosopher, as one who studied and revealed the science of Mind, to a degree, perhaps, as no other has done before or after. For Johnston, Sankara represents the mind and soul of Vedanta-the culmination of a work of centuries, through the efforts of countless sages. In his own words: "By the Vedanta, we mean, I think, the sum of the rivers of wisdom which rise in the Upanishads, and flow through books like the Bhagavad Gita into the reservoir of the Brahma Sutras, made level and water-tight by the Commentary of Sankaracharya." Of the value and importance of Sankara's works, Johnston has much to say throughout his commentaries and in the articles included in this volume. To him, the texts translated here teach "quite plainly and lucidly, the first steps on the path of wisdom." They offer us not only a high intellectual understanding of the Vedanta philosophy, but a high moral foundation as well. The works translated and commented upon in this volume are drawn from several sources, and passed through more than one rendition each. Johnston first began his translation of these works in 1894 on behalf of the Oriental Department of the Theosophical Society. Therein he completed a translation of the Atma Bodha, Tattva Bodha, Vakya Sudha, Siddhanta-Tattva-Vindu and the famous Crest-Jewel of Wisdom (Vivekachudamani). These translations were later compiled and published by the same society as The Crest-Jewel of Wisdom and other Writings of Sankaracharya (Theosophical University Press, First Edition, 1946). These, however, are not the same translations that appear in the present volume. Several years after his work for the Oriental Department, Johnston revisited his translations of each of these works, with the exception of the Siddhanta-Tattva-Vindu, revising and refining his terminology, greatly enhancing his clarity and, in our opinion, improving upon the poetry of each translation. These later translations appeared in a small periodical magazine call the Theosophical Quarterly, between the years 1913 and 1925. It is these, with their accompanying commentaries, that appear in this volume. Several articles are also included in the work, both to introduce and to supplement the translations. These are are drawn from several sources, and provide many details of Johnston's approach to Vedanta not covered in his commentaries. A second appendix provides a translation of the Atmanatma-Viveka by the theosophist Mohini Chatterji, along with an article by the same author. Johnston's Vedanta is, we feel, a faithful representation of Sankara's thought and intent, translated not only from one language to another, but from one culture to another. He makes Sankara's works accessible to the western mind, giving us a foothold into the nature of eastern wisdom in a way few others have done.

Knowledge is practiced when our vision has undergone a change from the relative standpoint to absolute vision and this can happen only by the ability to see beyond the obvious in the day-to-day interactions of life. This approach of seeing the Divinity in and through all the experiences of daily life is abundantly presented by Bhagawan Shankaracharya ji in his Atma Bodha which is the subject matter of this publication.

Book Meditation A Practical Guidebook

Download or read book Meditation A Practical Guidebook written by Swami Tadatmananda and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ask, "What is meditation?" is like asking, "What is music?" No simple answer can even hope to convey the breadth and richness of this subject. Meditation is a contemplative art, a mental discipline, and a sacred journey. Meditation is a reflective practice, a tranquil retreat, and a joyous excursion. Meditation is simultaneously an aesthetic pursuit, a scientific investigation, and a spiritual path. You could say that meditation is a rainbow of many hues. But to describe meditation with fancy words and elegant expressions is like trying to describe the flavour of a ripe peach. Meditation, like the peach, must be experienced to be understood. Words can never suffice. Yet words of description and explanation are not useless. Words can tell you how to select the ripest fruit from a bushel of peaches. And words can tell you how to meditate, leading you to develop a powerful, rewarding practice. This book provides practical, methodical guidance for all who want to develop a powerful and rewarding practice of meditation. It begins with basic principles and proceeds step by step to more advanced topics while exploring a wide range of meditation techniques. Though the subject is vast attempt has been under to create a concise and user-friendly guidebook.

Book Tattva Bodha By Shankaracharya

Download or read book Tattva Bodha By Shankaracharya written by Shraddhesh Chaturvedi and published by Shraddhesh Chaturvedi. This book was released on 2020-09-13 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short book, Shankaracharya has explained the fundamental building blocks of all the entities as outlined in Vedic philosophy. This diverse world which consists of innumerable living and non-living entities, is nothing but an aggregate of these building blocks. Same observation holds for our bodies and its parts. He discusses the creation, composition and characteristics of our mind, intellect, memory and ego. He talks about the three different type of bodies we possess during waking, dreams and sound sleep. Along the way, he shows that which is not created is what we actually are. Our reality is beyond is beyond all bodies and definitions. Why we are not able to identify with this unborn and timeless reality now and how can we know it is the next set of important questions which he answers. And, then he answers the questions like what happens when we know the reality ourselves and how is it intrinsically different from the perception of reality of an ordinary person. It can serve as a concise, excellent and essential reference on Vedic philosophy which can help in understanding other Vedic texts. Clarity of basic concepts leads to swift and sound progress towards our non-dual reality. In this eternal oneness, there is no distress and delusion but the bliss and knowledge abound. We are this reality now but unaware of it due to our lack of focus. Once we understand it, it shines forth as if the sun has just come out of dark clouds of ignorance.
