Book Japanese Film and the Challenge of Video

Download or read book Japanese Film and the Challenge of Video written by Tom Mes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the phenomenon of V-Cinema, founded in Japan in 1989 as a distribution system for direct-to-video movies which film companies began making having failed to recoup their investment in big budget films. It examines how studios and directors worked quickly to capitalize on niche markets or upcoming and current trends, and how as a result this period of history in Japanese cinema was an exceptionally diverse and vibrant film scene. It highlights how, although the V-Cinema industry declined from around 1995, the explosion in quantity and variety of such movies established and cemented many specific genres of Japanese film. Importantly the book argues that film scholars who have long looked down on video as a substandard medium without scholarly interest have been wrong to do so, and that V-Cinema challenges accepted notions of cultural value, providing insight into the formation of cinematic canons and inviting us to rethink what is meant by "Japanese cinema".

Book Video Culture in India

Download or read book Video Culture in India written by Ishita Tiwary and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media plays a significant role in reshaping, restructuring, and recalibrating the existing understandings of society and politics, giving birth to new cultural forms. Video, as a medium, captures not only real-time events but also the ethos of a milieu. Video Culture in India: The Analog Era narrates the history of video technology in India since its introduction in the 1980s, locating the moment within the country's socio-political context. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of video technology in post-1980s India: one that speaks to its global history and context and fills the lacunae in the existing literature of the field. The monograph draws on diverse oral histories, discarded tapes, and forgotten archives to unravel the history of analog video in India. Specifically, it looks at the widespread popularity of the marriage video, the little-known history of the video-film, the intensity associated with the video-news magazine, and the explosive imagination attached to the religious video. Analysing the multi-dimensionality of video provides the context for a better understanding of the proliferation of video culture in contemporary sites such as television news channels, digital photography, WhatsApp videos, and streaming. As the first full-length study of analog video production and circulation in India, this book invokes the forgotten video era in India.

Book Policy options for fertilizer subsidy reforms in Rwanda A simulation based analysis and synthesis of prior studies

Download or read book Policy options for fertilizer subsidy reforms in Rwanda A simulation based analysis and synthesis of prior studies written by Spielman, David J. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural input subsidies are a prominent feature in the 2018-2024 Strategic Plan for Agricultural Transformation (PSTA 4), which is designed and implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI). By reducing the cost of improved seed and inorganic fertilizers, subsidies are designed to accelerate the use of these productivity-enhancing inputs, thereby increasing agricultural yields and output, increasing rural incomes while reducing food prices, and improving food security in line with PSTA 4’s targets. However, questions arise about whether the current input subsidy rates and levels are sufficient to increase crop production and meet the PSTA 4 targets, and whether the subsidy system can be expanded in the current economic climate and fiscal situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and spike in global fertilizer prices. This paper examines the impact of an increase in the price of fertilizer in Rwanda using seasonal production data from National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) in a microsimulation model aimed at three priority crops—maize, rice, and Irish potato—and the three main fertilizers in use—diammonium phosphate (DAP), urea, and NPK.
