Download or read book Conception D un Syst me de Scellement D tanch it de Puits D une Enceinte de Stockage Permanent de D chets Nucl aires written by Golder Associates and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1993 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of a disposal vault in the Canadian Shield for the effective isolation of nuclear fuel wastes is being assessed as part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. A conceptual design study was conducted to seal and backfill the shafts. Volume 1 reviews current shaft sinking and lining technologies and factors that could affect the design of a shaft seal system, recommends the preferred construction methods for the shafts, and proposes a conceptual shaft seal. Volume 2 addresses the performance assessment of a shaft seal system. A schedule and cost estimates are included.

Book Design Considerations for Sealing the Shafts of a Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal Vault

Download or read book Design Considerations for Sealing the Shafts of a Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal Vault written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shafts in an underground disposal system, which constitutepotential pathways between the disposal vault and the biosphere, should be effectively sealed if the system is to perform as ahydrodynamic and geochemical barrier for the safe containment ofnuclear fuel waste. In the design of the shaft backfill, consideration should be given to ensure that the backfill and thebackfill/rock interface remain intact. Design-related problems, including critical pathways for the transport of radionuclides, configuration of shaft backfill and its functional requirements, the state of stress in a backfilled shaft with particularemphasis on the arching and load transfer phenomenon arediscussed in this report.

Book Their World A Diversity of Microbial Environments

Download or read book Their World A Diversity of Microbial Environments written by Christon J. Hurst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes recent advances in environmental microbiology by providing fascinating insights into the diversity of microbial life that exists on our planet. The first two chapters present theoretical perspectives that help to consolidate our understanding of evolution as an adaptive process by which the niche and habitat of each species develop in a manner that interconnects individual components of an ecosystem. This results in communities that function by simultaneously coordinating their metabolic and physiologic actions. The third contribution addresses the fossil record of microorganisms, and the subsequent chapters then introduce the microbial life that currently exists in various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Coverage of the geosphere addresses endolithic organisms, life in caves and the deep continental biosphere, including how subsurface microbial life may impact spent nuclear fuel repositories. The discussion of the hydrosphere includes hypersaline environments and arctic food chains. By better understanding examples from the micro biosphere, we can elucidate the many ways in which the niches of different species, both large and small, interconnect within the overlapping habitats of this world, which is governed by its microorganisms.

Book Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock

Download or read book Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock written by K. Fuenkajorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sealing of boreholes and underground excavations has not received much engineering attention until fairly recently. The growing awareness of and sensitivity to environmental concerns of the technical community as well as of the public at large has resulted in an increasing recognition of the fact that these geological penetrations may have an environmental impact. The issue of possible contamination resulting from migration along boreholes, adits, shafts or tunnels unquestionably has been raised most forcefully with in the context of nuclear waste disposal. Several nuclear waste disposal programs, notably the Civilian and the Defence programs of the US De partment of Energy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Canadian and Swedish radioactive waste disposal programs have conducted major research efforts aimed at developing adequate seal designs for penet rations in host rock formations for high-level nuclear waste repositories. While a considerable data base has been gathered over the last two decades or so with regard to the performance of seals, most of the information is presented in research reports and widely scattered papers in journals and proceedings of conferences. Hence, the materials are not readily accessible to potential users such as designers, contractors or regulators who are not familiar with nuclear waste disposal programs.
