Book Vathek with The Episodes of Vathek

Download or read book Vathek with The Episodes of Vathek written by William Beckford and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2001-05-14 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Beckford’s Vathek is a touchstone of eighteenth-century Orientalism and of the Gothic novel. Beckford’s later work, The Episodes of Vathek, shares Vathek’s irreverent and decadent style, and an edition that unites the two has long been overdue. The Broadview edition includes a newly discovered early version of the first episode, never before in print, that centres on male-male love, as well as the previously published version that was re-written by Beckford as a heterosexual narrative. Based on the 1823 edition—the last one edited by the author himself—the Broadview Edition also introduces The Episodes in the order Beckford planned, and incorporates his final corrections.

Book The Episodes of Vathek Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Episodes of Vathek Classic Reprint written by William Beckford, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Episodes of Vathek When I was collecting documents for "The Life and Letters of William Beckford, of Fonthill," I was so fortunate as to obtain permission from the Duke of Hamilton, a collateral descendant of the author of "Vathek," to examine the Beckford papers preserved at Hamilton Palace. In the two large chests containing these papers (never before examined by any literary man) I found, besides much important material for the biography, some large bundles of manuscripts. These manuscripts, written in French, were the unpublished Episodes of Beckford's famous Oriental tale, "Vathek," which were supposed to have been lost. Whatever value may be set upon the Episodes, there can be no doubt that the discovery, or rather recovery, of them was peculiarly interesting; and I regarded myself as fortunate when the Duke of Hamilton generously acceded to my request to be allowed to introduce them to the public. The two shorter stories have been printed in the original French in The English Review (December 1909; August, September 1910); and now for the first time the three Episodes appear in an English translation by Sir Frank T. Marzials, C.B. To the Duke of Hamilton I am deeply indebted for permission to publish the tales; and I am not less the debtor of Sir Frank T. Marzials, who very kindly presented me with his admirable translation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She dreams of what life was like before the occupation; she dreams of writing poetry like the old-world poems she adores; she dreams of receiving a sign from Dihya that one day, she, too, will have adventure, and travel beyond her isolated home. But when adventure comes for Amani, it is not what she expects: she is kidnapped by the regime and taken in secret to the royal palace, where she discovers that she is nearly identical to the cruel half-Vathek Princess Maram. The princess is so hated by her conquered people that she requires a body double, someone to appear in public as Maram, ready to die in her place. As Amani is forced into her new role, she can’t help but enjoy the palace’s beauty—and her time with the princess’ fiancé, Idris. But the glitter of the royal court belies a world of violence and fear. If Amani ever wishes to see her family again, she must play the princess to perfection...because one wrong move could lead to her death.

Book TransGothic in Literature and Culture

Download or read book TransGothic in Literature and Culture written by Jolene Zigarovich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to an emerging field of study and provides new perspectives on the ways in which Gothic literature, visual media, and other cultural forms explicitly engage gender, sexuality, form, and genre. The collection is a forum in which the ideas of several well-respected critics converge, producing a breadth of knowledge and a diversity of subject areas and methodologies. It is concerned with several questions, including: How can we discuss Gothic as a genre that crosses over boundaries constructed by a culture to define and contain gender and sexuality? How do transgender bodies specifically mark or disrupt this boundary crossing? In what ways does the Gothic open up a plural narrative space for transgenre explorations, encounters, and experimentation? With this, the volume’s chapters explore expected categories such as transgenders, transbodies, and transembodiments, but also broader concepts that move through and beyond the limits of gender identity and sexuality, such as transhistories, transpolitics, transmodalities, and transgenres. Illuminating such areas as the appropriation of the trans body in Gothic literature and film, the function of trans rhetorics in memoir, textual markers of transgenderism, and the Gothic’s transgeneric qualities, the chapters offer innovative, but not limited, ways to interpret the Gothic. In addition, the book intersects with but also troubles non-trans feminist and queer readings of the Gothic. Together, these diverse approaches engage the Gothic as a definitively trans subject, and offer new and exciting connections and insights into Gothic, Media, Film, Narrative, and Gender and Sexuality Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gothic Byron examines in detail the Gothic element in Byron’s work, arguing that it has traditionally been undervalued. It looks closely at his reading in the novels of Ann Radcliffe, Monk Lewis, and Charlotte Dacre, and then discusses the Gothic elements in his Turkish Tales, plays, and satirical poetry, ending with two essays on Don Juan. Further essays explore the indebtedness of several European and English writers, including Charlotte and Emily Brontë, to the Gothic element in Byron’s poetry.
