Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LYWA director Nick Ribush writes: The story behind this book is that in the early Kopan Monastery courses, Lama Zopa Rinpoche would start his day’s teachings by quoting a verse from Shantideva’s or Khunu Lama Rinpoche’s seminal texts, giving a short teaching on it and then suggesting that students use it to generate a bodhicitta motivation for the day’s activities (mainly teachings, meditations and discussion groups but also ordinary activities such as eating, talking, walking around and so forth). Since those days I’ve always thought that a compilation of these short teachings would make a great book, and finally, here it is. Editor Gordon McDougall has assembled Rinpoche's teachings into two parts, sorted by author of the verses and arranged thematically. In Part One, Lama Zopa Rinpoche teaches on selected verses from Khunu Lama Rinpoche's Jewel Lamp, now published as Vast as the Heavens, Deep as the Sea. Lama Zopa Rinpoche advises, "Understanding and constantly reminding ourselves of the skies of benefits that bodhicitta brings is unbelievably worthwhile. This is the overall purpose of Khunu Lama Rinpoche’s book, to cause us to feel inspired and joyful that such a mind is possible." In Part Two, Rinpoche teaches on verses from the first chapter of Shantideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life. These verses describe the amazing benefits of developing the precious mind of bodhicitta, the supreme cause of happiness for all sentient beings.

Download or read book Nightly Wisdom written by Josh Bartok and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-11-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings the world over have always found the nighttime-and its attendant activities of sleeping, dreaming, and waking up-mysterious, mystical, and rich with meaning and metaphor. The name Buddha means the one who has awakened and enlightenment itself is often portrayed literarily as the luminous full moon, lighting our way through the blinding black of night. Nightly Wisdom goes deep into the wealth of Buddhist inspirations on these powerful topics: offering encouragement and clear teaching on lucid dreaming and Tibetan dream yoga, the art of extending one's meditation practice into the boundary-less world of dreamtime; gentle guidance on relaxing into restful sleep and awakening from the suffering dream of separateness; as well as poetry and prose whose sources span time and space from ancient Japan and the Buddha himself to some of the brightest lights of Buddhism today. A book unlike any other, Nightly Wisdom is designed to be placed on the bedside table and read last thing in the evening so that one's sleep may be infused with a virtue that can be renewed in the morning and carried on throughout the day. Nightly Wisdom represents perhaps the first effort to bring all of these Buddhist inspirations together in one welcoming volume and is an ideal guide for anyone who has ever dreamed of waking up to the entirety of life or wondered how best to suffuse this wisdom into that third of our lives we all spend in bed.

This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shantideva’s Bodhisattvacharyavatara (A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life) holds a unique place in Mahayana Buddhism akin to that of the Dhammapada in Hinayana Buddhism and the Bhagavadgita in Hinduism. In combining those rare qualities of scholastic precision, spiritual depth and poetical beauty, its appeal extends to a wide audience of Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Composed in India during the 8th century of the Christian era, it has since been an inspiration to millions of people throughout the world. This present translation by Stephen Batchelor is based upon a 12th century Tibetan commentary as orally explained by Ven. Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey. The ninth chapter on wisdom has been expanded for this edition with relevant commentarial passages.

Download or read book The Erotic Bird written by Maurice Natanson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does literature illuminate the way we live? Maurice Natanson, a prominent champion of phenomenology, draws upon this method's unique power to show how fiction can highlight aspects of experience that are normally left unexamined. By exploring the structure of the everyday world, Natanson reveals the "uncanny" that lies at the core of the ordinary. Phenomenology--which involves the questioning of that which we usually take for granted--is for Natanson the essence of philosophy. Drawing upon his philosophical predecessors Edmund Husserl, Alfred Schutz, and Jean-Paul Sartre, Natanson paves his own way with stories and examples that themselves bear witness to how phenomenology occurs in literature. In considering such works as Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain, and Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, Natanson shows how literature opens us to the domain of possibility and how metaphor offers philosophical power when we think about freedom and change. This book, written by one of the twentieth century's leading phenomenologists, will interest students in philosophy and in literature. They will value the work particularly for its clarification of concepts and terms that frequently emerge in the contemporary intellectual climate.
