Book Positioning and Surveying Services for Artificial Island Dredging Projects

Download or read book Positioning and Surveying Services for Artificial Island Dredging Projects written by Intersite Surveys and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the brief arctic summer and fall of 1980, Dome Petroleum Ltd., as part of its expanding program of oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea in Canada, commenced the construction of artificial islands for exploratory drilling. The construction contract was awarded to the dredging division of Royal Volker Stevin nv of The Netherlands. On 5 August 1980 Intersite Surveys bv was commissioned by Volker Stevin Dredging to provide the positioning and surveying services for this project during the 1980 season. The nature of the project demanded that an accurate, reliable and flexible survey and navigation package be provided. To meet these requirements a medium range positioning system "Syledis", combined with Intersite Surveys Quality Control navigation package was supplied. It was initially expected that three vessels would require accurate positioning. These were: a) Trailer Suction Dredger (Geopotes X), b) Survey vessel (Mary B VI), c) Discharge barge (Canmar Barge I). A navigation package was tailor made to suit the specific requirements of each vessel. For various reasons, however, the discharge barge was not really operational during this season, apart from some trials. This report is intended to deal with the main points of interest arising from the survey aspects of this project. For convenience the report is divided into two main parts. PART I gives an account of the day to day operations of the Dredger and Survey vessel. The equipment used, its calibration, operation and performance are all discussed. It continues with an account of various operational aspects, the post-processing and finally, recommendations. The whole is supplemented by detailed appendices and summary of events. PART II contains the survey results in the form of contoured bathymetric charts and selected cross profiles derived from the surveys carried out at regular intervals throughout the island building process. Also included are various charts depicting the results of sand and gravel estimates made by the Geopotes X. (Au)."--ASTIS online database.

Book Sand Island Dykes Beaufort Sea

Download or read book Sand Island Dykes Beaufort Sea written by Western Canada Hydraulic Laboratories Ltd and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to improve the understanding of the processes at work in the construction of artificial islands in the Beaufort Sea. In particular, the study investigates the settling characteristics of a sand-water slurry discharged above the sea bed from a pipe fitted with a chain basket nozzle. The primary objective was to assess feasible sand slopes and dyke heights with the discharge nozzle arrangements prepared for construction operations in 1981. Model tests have been carried out at 1:5 scale to examine the settling characteristics of sand discharged from a pipe through a nozzle. Test facilities were set up to run experiments under controlled conditions into the effect of varying the nozzle design, nozzle height, nozzle movement and slurry specific gravity on the side slopes and crater formation of the resulting sand cones and/or dykes. ... From numerical analyses of the test results it was found that up to 35 percent of the pumped sand was not effectively used in building the cone formation but settled outside the cone area on the sand bed. It was anticipated that, depending on sand and ambient current characteristics, full scale cone and dyke construction operations in the field could experience losses of 50 percent of the pumped sand. The test study results showed that to ensure construction of constant dyke heights at the desired level in the field, preliminary calculation of sand volumes, discharge and nozzle movement rates must be carried out anticipating the likely degree of sand loss. Extreme nozzle motions should be avoided during construction"--ASTIS database.
