Book Cytology and Plectology of the Hymenomycetes

Download or read book Cytology and Plectology of the Hymenomycetes written by Heinz Clémençon and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the essentials of our knowledge of the cytology, plectology («histology») and anatomy of the Hymenomycetes, an important group of higher fungi including mushrooms, boletes, bracket fungi, club fungi, chanterelles, spine fungi and crust fungi, but excluding the Gasteromycetes and jelly fungi. It spans about two centuries of mycological research, from the late 18th century to spring 2003, and most chapters include historical notes on the topics discussed. Taxonomy, physiology, biochemistry, ecology and genetics are not treated, although a minimum of ecological or physiological information is given when appropriate. The terminology often breaks away from traditional and sometimes obsolete concepts, especially in the description of hyphal differentiations, of cystidia and of fruit body development. All accepted concepts and terms are illustrated and many examples given, often with new and original photographs. The last chapter, Associations of Hymenomycetes with Other Organisms, is deliberately short and concise, except the discussion of the lichenised Basidiomycetes, since most topics discussed there, e.g. the mycorrhizae and the termites, are treated in other specialised books or are still poorly understood.

Download or read book Fossil Fungi written by Thomas N Taylor and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi are ubiquitous in the world and responsible for driving the evolution and governing the sustainability of ecosystems now and in the past. Fossil Fungi is the first encyclopedic book devoted exclusively to fossil fungi and their activities through geologic time. The book begins with the historical context of research on fossil fungi (paleomycology), followed by how fungi are formed and studied as fossils, and their age. The next six chapters focus on the major lineages of fungi, arranging them in phylogenetic order and placing the fossils within a systematic framework. For each fossil the age and provenance are provided. Each chapter provides a detailed introduction to the living members of the group and a discussion of the fossils that are believed to belong in this group. The extensive bibliography (~ 2700 entries) includes papers on both extant and fossil fungi. Additional chapters include lichens, fungal spores, and the interactions of fungi with plants, animals, and the geosphere. The final chapter includes a discussion of fossil bacteria and other organisms that are fungal-like in appearance, and known from the fossil record. The book includes more than 475 illustrations, almost all in color, of fossil fungi, line drawings, and portraits of people, as well as a glossary of more than 700 mycological and paleontological terms that will be useful to both biologists and geoscientists. First book devoted to the whole spectrum of the fossil record of fungi, ranging from Proterozoic fossils to the role of fungi in rock weathering Detailed discussion of how fossil fungi are preserved and studied Extensive bibliography with more than 2000 entries Where possible, fungal fossils are placed in a modern systematic context Each chapter within the systematic treatment of fungal lineages introduced with an easy-to-understand presentation of the main characters that define extant members Extensive glossary of more than 700 entries that define both biological, geological, and mycological terminology

Book Microbial Genomics Clinical Pharmaceutical and Industrial Applications

Download or read book Microbial Genomics Clinical Pharmaceutical and Industrial Applications written by Huseyin Tombuloglu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the field of genomics has progressed, our understanding of microbiology has also developed. With the advent of next-generation sequencing methods and advancements in instrumental resolution, complex transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome data could be analyzed, as well as detailed annotation of microbial genomes. Microbial Genomics: Clinical, Pharmaceutical and Industrial Applications focuses on the various applications of microbial genomics in clinical, pharmaceutical and industrial fields. It consists of four parts devoted to bacterial, viral, and fungal genomics, as well as their applications in clinical, pharmaceutical, and industrial fields. Chapters are written by experts in their respective disciplines and are tightly organized with an introduction to detailed descriptions, available software implementation, applications, advanced topics, summaries, analytic questions, exercises, and suggested readings. Throughout this book, the latest genomics and biotechnological developments and discoveries as well as open problems and future challenges on microbial genomics will be highlighted. Readers will be introduced to state-of-the-art developments and trends of microbial genomics, its clinical, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. The book will be beneficial for researchers who study microbial genomics in universities, post-graduate and graduate programs (biology, biotechnology, medicine, genetics, microbiology, industrial and environmental microbiology, etc.), as well as the pharmaceutical and industrial sector. Presents the recent genomic developments in the industrial applications of microorganisms Summarizes recent developments in microbial genomics, emphasizing the role of next-generation sequencing in functional genomics Focus on how transcriptomics can help better understand host responses to pathogen infection Describes applications of genomics in clinical microbiology

Book Fungi of Cameroon

Download or read book Fungi of Cameroon written by Clovis Douanla-Meli and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi of Cameroon is a contribution towards assessing the current macrofungal diversity associated with the ecosystems of Cameroon's southern forests, and evaluates the impact of deforestation and slash-and-burn on fungal communities and tracks the occurrence and changes to the fungal communities through the seasonal climatic variations (rainfall). The overall recorded species were new to the Mbalmayo forest reserve, while 75 of the described species were new to Cameroon, and eleven new mycobiota were described, plus one combination. The greatest fungal diversity was observed in forest stands, declining towards fallows and cropland. A distinct reduction of the diversity of wood and litter-dependent fungal species can be observed where land conversion takes place which is a definite threat to fungal species. As expected, seasonal variations fundamentally influence and govern the fruition and composition of the fungal communities studied.
