Book excerpt: Implications of improved understanding of partially saturated flow in jointed rock masses are numerous, especially given the complexity, heterogeneity and anisotropy of the intermediate fractured vadose zone. One such implication is the quantification of water movement for engineering purposes. This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of variably saturated flow through discrete open fractures as it applies to rock engineering and geotechnical engineering applications. The initial phase comprises the analyses of results from Lugeon tests conducted at De Hoop Dam that guide a subsequent experimental phase by identifying field parameters and relationships that influence variably saturated flow processes. The series of flow visualisation experiments are developed using transparent smooth parallel fracture replicas with differing flow rates and inclinations, modelled in a geotechnical centrifuge. The findings show that the geotechnical centrifuge is a viable experimental tool for the replication of variably saturated fracture flow mechanisms. Additionally, it was found that preferential flow occupies the minority of the cross-sectional area despite the flux, and that flow becomes a matter of the continuity principle requiring substantially higher flow rates given the very low degree of saturation. Furthermore, these preferential paths are characterised by non-Darcian flow, which can be successfully evaluated using the Forchheimer relationship. The relevance of how flow occurs through fractures at partial saturation in the engineering context is understated, especially given the quest to achieve better quantification of in-situ tests during site investigations. The results prove that using common Darcian-based empirical correlations to define hydraulic conductivities from insitu tests is cautioned. Furthermore, these volume-effective approaches do not contribute to fundamental research and require a deeper understanding of the small-scale processes in the intermediate fractured vadose zone. The design of infrastructure therefore cannot be optimised without a thorough understanding of the complex flow conditions in natural and engineered rock masses.

Book excerpt: We have carried out numerical modeling studies to investigate the development of discrete fracture flow paths and flow-focusing phenomena in the unsaturated rock of the potential repository horizon at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. These studies are based on two- and three dimensional (2-D and 3-D) numerical models using site-specific parameters. The 2-D and 3-D models use high-resolution spatial discretization to explicitly include effects of discrete fractures with stochastically developed fracture permeabilities and a continuum approach. The permeability field is generated based on air-permeability measurements at various scales. For most of the cases considered, uniform infiltration with different average rates (1 to 500 mm/yr) is prescribed at the top of the model, while variability in outflow at the bottom of the model is used to evaluate the degree of flow focusing. In addition, scenarios involving nonuniform infiltration at the top boundary, different permeability correlation lengths, and different flow-allocation schemes were analyzed. The modeling results obtained from all of the cases showed a remarkably similar flow-focusing pattern at the repository horizon. Furthermore, tracer transport simulation results also revealed additional features of focused flow and transport through the fracture network.

Book excerpt: Spontaneous imbibition plays a very important role in the displacement mechanism of non-wetting fluid in naturally fractured reservoirs. We developed a new 2D two-phase finite element numerical model, as available commercial simulators cannot be used to model small-scale experiments with different boundary conditions as well as complex boundary conditions such as fractures and vugs. Starting with the basic equation of fluid flow, we derived the non-linear diffusion saturation equation. This equation cannot be put in weighted-integral weak variational form and hence Rayleigh-Ritz finite element method (FEM) cannot be applied. Traditionally, the way around it is to use higher order interpolation functions and use Galerkin FEM or reduce the differentiability requirement and use Mixed FEM formulation. Other FEM methods can also be used, but iterative nature of those methods makes them unsuitable for solving large-scale field problems. But if we truncate the non-linear terms and decouple the dependent variables, from the spatial as well as the temporal domains of the primary variable to solve them analytically, the non-linear FEM problem reduces to a simple weighted integral form, which can be put into its corresponding weak form. The advantage of using Rayleigh-Ritz method is that it has immediate effect on the computation time required to solve a particular problem apart from incorporating complex boundary conditions. We compared our numerical models with the analytical solution of this diffusion equation. We validated the FDM numerical model using X-Ray Tomography (CT) experimental data from the single-phase spontaneous imbibition experiment, where two simultaneously varying parameters of weight gain and CT water saturation were used and then went ahead and compared the results of FEM model to that of FDM model. A two-phase field size example was taken and results from a commercial simulator were compared to the FEM model to bring out the limitations of this approach.

Book excerpt: Laboratory techniques are developed that allow concurrent measurement of unsaturated matrix hydraulic conductivity and fracture transmissivity of fractured rock blocks. Two Apache Leap tuff blocks with natural fractures were removed from near Superior, Arizona, shaped into rectangular prisms, and instrumented in the laboratory. Porous ceramic plates provided solution to block tops at regulated pressures. Infiltration tests were performed on both test blocks. Steady flow testing of the saturated first block provided estimates of matrix hydraulic conductivity and fracture transmissivity. Fifteen centimeters of suction applied to the second block top showed that fracture flow was minimal and matrix hydraulic conductivity was an order of magnitude less than the first block saturated matrix conductivity. Coated-wire ion-selective electrodes monitored aqueous chlorided breakthrough concentrations. Minute samples of tracer solution were collected with filter paper. The techniques worked well for studying transport behavior at near-saturated flow conditions and also appear to be promising for unsaturated conditions. Breakthrough curves in the fracture and matrix, and a concentration map of chloride concentrations within the fracture, suggest preferential flows paths in the fracture and substantial diffusion into the matrix. Average travel velocity, dispersion coefficient and longitudinal dispersivity in the fracture are obtained. 67 refs., 54 figs., 23 tabs.
