Book Forgotten Peoples of the Ancient World

Download or read book Forgotten Peoples of the Ancient World written by Philip Matyszak and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chronicle of forty forgotten ancient civilizations which highlights the important contributions that each has made to modern society. The ancient world of the Mediterranean and the Near East saw the birth and collapse of great civilizations. While several of these are well known, for all those that have been recorded, many have been unjustly forgotten. Our history is overflowing with different cultures that have all evolved over time, sometimes dissolving or reforming, though ultimately shaping the way we continue to live. But for every culture that has been remembered, what have we forgotten? This thorough guide explores those civilizations that have faded from the pages of our textbooks but played a significant role in the development of modern society. Forgotten Peoples of the Ancient World covers the Hyksos to the Hephthalites and everyone in between, providing a unique overview of humanity’s history from approximately 3000 BCE–550 CE. A wide range of illustrated artifacts and artworks, as well as specially drawn maps, help to tell the stories of forty lost peoples and allow readers to take a direct look into the past. Each entry exposes a diverse culture, highlighting their important contributions and committing their achievements to paper. Forgotten Peoples of the Ancient World is an immersive, thought-provoking, and entertaining book for anyone interested in ancient history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings or Glimpses of Vanished Civilizations Year after year shows more and more the phenomenal rapidity by which every branch of science moves on; new discoveries in all departments of applied science especially attract distinguished students, and the earth's hidden forces are but now on the threshold of discovery. Great scientists, however, who have from the earliest ages presumed God's works toscan in relation to the age of the earth and man's first appearance on it, in opposition to the teaching of the Book of Genesis, are no nearer to the realization of their problems than they ever were. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the origins of mankind through lost and vanished civilizations, including mysterious Atlantis. PREFACE. The present little book is devoted to an at- tempt to simplify the story of the early begin- nings of our world, and to trace the origin of the vanished civilizations, remains of which are now being brought to light every day by distinguished archaeologists. The treatment of such subjects in so small a compass may well deserve the name of " Glimpses," and only merits consideration from the fact that the author confesses to have annexed without qualm or compunction (but she hopes with care) the writings of learned men, and has tried to re-tell their discoveries in plain lan- guage suitable to her youthful readers. It can scarcely be said that there is anything in this book which has not appeared somewhere be- fore, in the vast literature of many lands which has grown up round so many distinguished scientists, some of whose books are so pro- found as to be outside the range of general readers. They have forgotten that youthful students have to walk before they attempt to run. This accomplishment in the paths of early history the author of this little book has endeavoured to teach, through the medium of others' profundity.
