Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and humorist Garrison Keillor returns to one of America's most beloved mythical towns, beset by a contagion of alarming candor. A mysterious virus has infiltrated the good people of Lake Wobegon, transmitted via unpasteurized cheese made by a Norwegian bachelor farmer, the effect of which is episodic loss of social inhibition. Mayor Alice, Father Wilmer, Pastor Liz, the Bunsens and Krebsbachs, formerly taciturn elders, burst into political rants, inappropriate confessions, and rhapsodic proclamations, while their teenagers watch in amazement. Meanwhile, a wealthy outsider is buying up farmland for a Keep America Truckin’ motorway and amusement park, estimated to draw 2.2 million visitors a year. Clint Bunsen and Elena the hometown epidemiologist to the rescue, with a Fourth of July Living Flag and sweet corn feast for a finale. In his newest Lake Wobegon novel, Garrison Keillor takes us back to the small prairie town where for so long American readers and listeners have found laughter as well as the wry airing of our foibles and most familiar desires and fears—a town where, as we know, "all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average."

Book Art of Mar a Izquierdo

Download or read book Art of Mar a Izquierdo written by María Izquierdo and published by America's Society Art Gallery. This book was released on 1997 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for her engaging portraits and sensuous still lifes, Mexican artist Maria Izquierdo (1902-1955) created a remarkable body of work that is deeply personal and profoundly affecting; yet she has often been overlooked amid the muralists who were her contemporaries. While European modernism was important to Izquierdo, Mexico's traditional culture, popular arts, and rural landscapes provided her with a lifelong source of subjects. Her numerous paintings lovingly depict the foods and hand-crafted objects used in popular ritual and devotion. In her later life, she produced a number of hauntingly surreal compositions that show vibrant tableaux of typically Mexican foods before barren, somber-hued landscapes with unusually deep perspectives. This book, based on the first comprehensive presentation of her oeuvre in New York, confirms Izquierdo's place in the history of Mexican art. In addition to bringing together some sixty outstanding paintings and works on paper by the artist, the book features three essays on her life and work: curator Elizabeth Ferrer presents an overview of Izquierdo's oeuvre; art historian Olivier Debroise analyzes the artistic relationship between Izquierdo and her mentor Rufino Tamayo, and Elena Poniatowski explores Izquierdo's position as a woman in the Mexican art world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely consideration of African-American artists' rich engagement with the history of art from the twentieth century, this book is the winner of the James A. Porter and David C. Driskell Book Award for African American Art History. Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition presents works by African American artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries together with works by the early-twentieth-century European artists with whom they engaged. Black artists have investigated, interrogated, invaded, entangled, annihilated, or immersed themselves in the aesthetics, symbolism, and ethos of European art for more than a century. The powerful push and pull of this relationship constitutes a distinct tradition for many African American artists who source the master narratives of art history to critique, embrace, or claim their own space. This groundbreaking catalog--accompanying a major exhibition at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.--explores the connections and frictions around modernism in the works of artists such as Romare Bearden, Pablo Picasso, Faith Ringgold, Renee Cox, Robert Colescott, Norman Lewis, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems and Henri Matisse. The volume explores how blackness has often been conceived from the standpoint of these international and intergenerational connections and presents the divergent and complex works born of these important dialogues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Science tends to generalize, and generaliza tions mean simplifications . . . . And generaliza tions are also more satisfying to the mind than details. Of course, details and generalizations must be in proper balance: Generalizations can be reached only from details, while it is the generalization which gives value and interest to the detail:' . . . (A. Szent-Gyorgy, Science 1964) The first edition of this book, published in German as Tabak abhiingigkeit in 2001, was prompted by the fact that no single volume was available in Germany or elsewhere summarising the adverse repercussions of cigarette smoking on human health. As far as my own research was able to ascertain, the last comprehensive work dealing with this subject was writ ten in Germany by the Dresden internist, F. Lickint, whose Tabak und Organismus was published in 1939 by the Hip pokrates-Verlag. All subsequent monographs in this field have tended to focus on detailed aspects, and there has been no shortage of publications on subjects such as how smokers can quit smoking, healthy eating for smokers etc. Friends and colleagues abroad have urged me to prepare an English language version of Tabakabhiingigkeit. In gladly complying with this suggestion, I have intentionally prepared an up dated and slightly enlarged new edition, taking account of the rapidly proliferating literature on the subject up to the start of 2002. The harmful sequelae of smoking are played down by politicians in many industrialised countries, including Ger many.

Book excerpt: A 1,000 year old Hawaiian lifestyle makes its way into the 21st century. This practice was outlawed and no longer allowed to be practiced openly. But it was kept alive by the kahuna (wisdom keepers) and has evolved into what it is today, a personalized version of ho'oponopono, the ancient Hawaiian healing practice of forgiveness and retribution. The Magic Words: love, humility, compassion, and gratitude. The Magic Words describes in great detail how to best use them and apply them to your life to bring you to a place of Peace, Joy, and Happiness. How is it that these four statements are changing lives across the planet? What is behind it all? Is it just some spiritual woo-woo designed to help people feel better in the moment? Another panacea? Or is it for real and is actually working and changing lives and healing chronic illnesses?Rest assured, it is very real!!!. The Magic Words takes a deep dive into the inner workings of ho'oponopono to explain it from the spiritual, scientific, metaphysical, psychological, and quantum physics perspectives. We will look at the science of neuroplasticity, the neuroscience of creativity as well as the neuroscience of chronic pain. When we begin to understand how it works and why, it becomes easier to put it into practical use in our every-day lives. The Magic Words walks us through numerous life experiences and shows how to apply ho'oponopono for more positive, loving results along with case studies of healing chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, relationships, addiction, etc. If someone tells you "Just get over it." or "Just let it go." or "Just love it." "How do I do that, how do I just let go?""I don't know, you just do it."Once we learn how, we begin to understand the magic in the words.
