Van dyke was spent in his father's country home; and there he conceived that love for rural life and occupations which continued throughout his career, making him long for the green fields even while he dwelt in cities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Van Dyke Book: Selected From the Writings of Henry Van Dyke Again, I recall an amusing and characteristic pic ture of Doctor van Dyke at the time when we, our selves, were entering the war. I had gone to him for his advice as to what branch of military service I should enter. Logically, and with his accustomed directness, his first words were: As you are well above the draft age, and the support of a growing family, you cannot, of course, think of any very dan gerous branch A few weeks later I came across him in the uniform of a lieutenant-commander in the navy. With the eagerness of a boy, and with a boy's flushed cheeks, he told me that not only had he been commissioned, but had, by dint of pertinacity on his part, I imagine, been promised a post, whenever pos sible, in one of the ships in the first line of battle. I am glad to say that the war ended before he got this post. He, himself, was also beyond the draft age, and the head of a family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Van Dyck: His Original Etchings and His Iconography H caring, we feel that Rembrandt renders the complexi ties of human nature with the greatest subtlety of expression, and to attain his end he used a method of close shading almost too subtle for the medium of etch ing. He may have seen even more in his sitters than their own friends realized, and perhaps failed to con centrate on the more striking external characteristics which would constitute the whole man to the world of his acquaintance. Moreover he was capable of thinking less of immediate faithfulness to the lineaments of his model than of some more strictly artistic aim, just as in his later pictures portraiture pure and simple becomes subservient to the development of his ideas of chiar oscuro. It was thus that his famous Night Watch heralded the decline of his popularity with the fashionable world of sitters who wished first of all to be admired, or at least recognized. One after one, . With sweet delay, The mellow sounds that clifl' and islgnd gave, Have lingered in the crescent bay, Until, by lightest breezes fanned, They float far off beyond the dying day' And leave it still as death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthony Van Dyck: A Further Study Arts, but the prudish ignorance and prejudice which pre vailed so strongly at certain times during the nineteenth century impeded for too long a time any proper concep tion of the true dimensions of his vast genius. Van Dyck, on the other hand, could offend no drawing-room suscep tibilities, and his name was a comfortable cloak for num berless mediocre productions of his school and period. Jordaens hardly came within the purview of the nineteenth century at all. It was a harder task to Convince the public mind that Jordaens, like Frans Hals, was a great and true artist in paint, and that if he painted the somewhat coarse and exuberant life of his time and his home, he was as much entitled to do this as the artists of the nineteenth century were to depict the elegant inanities and affecta tions of their own surroundings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
