Download or read book Beyond Common Sense Sexuality And Gender In Contemporary Japan written by Wim Lunsing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2001. This volume is based on the author's visit to Japan in Summer 1986 on his findings about some of the questions he was asked whilst there. He was 25 and these questions centred around asking if he was married or had a girlfriend, when in his homeland of the Netherlands he openly identified as gay. This research is an investigation of how gay and lesbian people, women's and men's liberationaists, singles and other people, such as transsexuals, transvestites and hermaphrodites, whose ideas, feelings or lifestyles are at variance with Japanese constructions of marriage and inherently the construction of life, live in Japan.

Download or read book The Sensible Cook written by Peter G. Rose and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most favored Dutch cookbook of the seventeenth century, The Sensible Cook (De Verstandige Kock) had a major impact on the foodways of the Dutch in the Netherlands and in their New World territories. As a part of the larger work, The Pleasurable Country Life, The Sensible Cook records the foodways of rich middle-class households, the cooking methods and typical dishes they prepared, and the implements and ingredients they employed. Often the recipes are surprisingly sophisticated. From braising a chicken with orange peel and cinnamon to stuffing pigeons with a mixture of parsley, ginger, sugar, butter, and raisins, many of the dishes are still appealing today. Peter G. Rose has, in fact, adapted some two dozen of the recipes for contemporary use—tempting dishes such as “Shoemaker’s Cake,” a delicious combination of bread crumbs, butter, eggs, and stewed apples. Handsomely illustrated with Dutch genre paintings, The Sensible Cook will interest cooks, food historians, students of social and cultural history, and the large number of Dutch descendants in America. Most important, this book will be welcomed by all who enjoy good food.
Download or read book Translation through grammar written by P. J. E. Hyams and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alltranslation is a compromise-the effort to be literal and the e. ffort to be idiomatic BenjaminJowett (1817-93) This book is designed to provide intermediate and advanced students of English with practice in the translation ofDutch texts into English. It contains fifty prose passages, most of them taken from recent Dutch novels or journals, all of them tried out on several generations of our own students in the 'pre-kandidaatsfase' of their studies at the English Department of the University of Nijmegen. In these respects, it is not spectacularly different from many other books ofits kind. We have, however, tried to offer the student rather more support in his translation work than is usually clone: each text is provided with a suggested translation of the first few lines and with notes containing information on grammar and idiom, sometimes preceded by supplementary material from British or American sources. The second part of the book comprises a short contrastive grammar speciallywritten to meet theneeds oftheuser. In this way wehope to offer a self-contained translation course which reinforces the interdependence of grammar, vocabulary, textual interpretation and style. Most ofthe texts in this book are reproduced in substantially the sameform and wording as in the original sources. In some cases editing was necessary in order, for example, to reduce long articles to more manageable proportions. In no cases, however, were we moved to doctor the originals in order to disambiguate them or to make them easier to translate.

Download or read book A Spectrum of Lexicography written by Robert F. Ilson and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents a balanced yet vivid picture of many of the domains of activity of lexicography. Ten contributors from eight countries discuss monolingual dictionaries (for learners and native speakers), bilingual dictionaries, an original approach to computer-aided lexicography, and the use of lexical material in language teaching. The collection of data; the inclusion, exclusion and ordering of material; definition and translation; and the provision of adequate information about grammatical valency, these are among the special topics treated, with many examples of the problems encountered and suggestions as to how they may be solved. A general introduction highlights the shared concerns that characterize the international discipline of contemporary dictionary-making.
