  • ISBN : 9783515087131
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book On the Astrolabe written by Farghānī and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Middle Ages the astrolabe was the best known and most widely used astronomical instrument both in the Islamic world and in the West. The oldest extant description of the construction of this instrument was written by the well-known Arabic astronomer al-Farghani (Baghdad, ca. 856). His treatise is especially valuable because of the tables it contains to enable an artificer to draw the various circles and arcs on the instrument. The Arabic text of this work, including the tables, is presented here for the first time in a critical edition, accompanied by an English translation and a commentary reproducing al-Farghani's reasoning in modern mathematical notation.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Late Antiquity

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Late Antiquity written by Scott Fitzgerald Johnson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-11 with total page 1294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Late Antiquity offers an innovative overview of a period (c. 300-700 CE) that has become increasingly central to scholarly debates over the history of western and Middle Eastern civilizations. This volume covers such pivotal events as the fall of Rome, the rise of Christianity, the origins of Islam, and the early formation of Byzantium and the European Middle Ages. These events are set in the context of widespread literary, artistic, cultural, and religious change during the period. The geographical scope of this Handbook is unparalleled among comparable surveys of Late Antiquity; Arabia, Egypt, Central Asia, and the Balkans all receive dedicated treatments, while the scope extends to the western kingdoms, and North Africa in the West. Furthermore, from economic theory and slavery to Greek and Latin poetry, Syriac and Coptic literature, sites of religious devotion, and many others, this Handbook covers a wide range of topics that will appeal to scholars from a diverse array of disciplines. The Oxford Handbook of Late Antiquity engages the perennially valuable questions about the end of the ancient world and the beginning of the medieval, while providing a much-needed touchstone for the study of Late Antiquity itself.

Book His Word is the Truth

Download or read book His Word is the Truth written by Jan van der Putten and published by Leiden University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A schemer of the lowest sort' who undermined the Dutch cause, or 'a smart and diligent native' who was particularly useful for Dutch officials? They held extreme and incompatible opinions about Haji Ibrahim (ca. 1810 - ca. 1875), a jack-of-all-trades who, to the best of his abilities, tried to serve the various groups in power in Riau in the nineteenth century. On of his patrons was Hermann von de Wall, who had come to the heartland of the Malay world, where the language was still 'pure', to collect materials for his Malay-Dutch dictionary. Haji Ibrahim served him as one of his main informants. The letters he wrote to his patron form the centre of the present study: they are published with summaries of their content and introduced by chapters on Malay letterwriting and on the historical background of the published letters. Apart from a discussion in chapter 4 about his role in the political configuration in mid-nineteenth century Riau, where a Malay sultan, a Bugis viceroy and a Dutch resident each promoted their interests, Haji Ibrahim's talents in wielding his quill are discussed in the last chapter. This book is one of the few studies in which the background of a Malay writer is reconstructed. Haji Ibrahim is brought to the fore as a writer who began his career by writing dramatized reports for his superiors, and eventually acquired certain fame with a collection of conversations published in 1868 and 1872. In the oral-oriented Malay world of the nineteenth century, officials such as Haji Ibrahim may well be the initiators of a new literary tradition.

Book O ye Gentlemen Arabic Studies on Science and Literary Culture

Download or read book O ye Gentlemen Arabic Studies on Science and Literary Culture written by Arnoud Vrolijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: O ye Gentlemen explores two vital strands in Arabic culture: the Greek tradition in science and philosophy and the literary tradition. They are permanent and, though drawing on Islam as a dominant religion, they are by no means dependent on it. That the strands freely interweave within the broader scope of Schrifttum is shown by more than thirty essays on subjects as varied as the social organisation of bees, spontaneous generation in the Shiʿite tradition, astronomy in the Arabian nights, the benefits of sex, precious stones in a literary text, the virtue of women in Judaeo-Arabic stories, animals in Middle Eastern music and the transmission of Arabic science and philosophy to the medieval West.

  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN : 9780847677856
  • Pages : 396 pages

Book excerpt: In 1971 Marilyn Strathern provided what has now become a classic ethnographic text, Women In Between. Significantly, this pioneering contribution to feminist anthropology focuses on gender relations rather than on women alone. Re-issued now, Women in Between examines the attitudes of the Hagen people and analyzes the power of women in their male-dominated system. Strathern cites case studies of marriage arrangements, divorce, and traditional settlement disputes to illustrate women's status in Hagen society.
