Book Planning and Design of Engineering Systems

Download or read book Planning and Design of Engineering Systems written by Graeme Dandy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly updated book offers a comprehensive introduction to the scope and nature of engineering work, taking a rigorous but common sense approach to the solution of engineering problems. The text follows the planning, modelling and design phases of engineering projects through to implementation or construction, explaining the conceptual framework for undertaking projects, and then providing a range of techniques and tools for solutions. It focuses on engineering design and problem solving, but also involves economic, environmental, social and ethical considerations. This third edition expands significantly on the economic evaluation of projects and also includes a new section on intractable problems and systems, involving a discussion of wicked problems and soft systems methodology as well as the approaches to software development. Further developments include an array of additional interest boxes, worked examples, problems and up-to date references. Case studies and real-world examples are used to illustrate the role of the engineer and especially the methods employed in engineering practice. The examples are drawn particularly from the fields of civil and environmental engineering, but the approaches and techniques are more widely applicable to other branches of engineering. The book is aimed at first-year engineering students, but contains material to suit more advanced undergraduates. It also functions as a professional handbook, covering some of the fundamentals of engineering planning and design in detail.

This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing students with a commonsense approach to the solution of engineering problems and packed full of practical case studies to illustrate the role of the engineer, the type of work involved and the methodologies employed in engineering practice, this textbook is a comprehensive introduction to the scope and nature of engineering. It outlines a conceptual framework for undertaking engineering projects then provides a range of techniques and tools for solving the sorts of problems that commonly arise. Focusing in particular on civil engineering design, problem solving, and the range of techniques and tools it employs, the authors also explore: creativity and problem solving, social and environmental issues, management, communications and law, and ethics the planning, design, modelling and analysis phases and the implementation or construction phase. Designed specifically for introductory courses on undergraduate engineering programs, this extensively revised and extended second edition is an invaluable resource for all new engineering undergraduates as well as non-specialist readers who are seeking information on the nature of engineering work and how it is carried out.

Book Prioritization Procedure for Proposed Road rail Grade Separation Projects Along Specific Rail Corridors

Download or read book Prioritization Procedure for Proposed Road rail Grade Separation Projects Along Specific Rail Corridors written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prioritization Procedure for Proposed Road–Rail Grade Separation Projects Along Specific Rail Corridors is designed to assist state and local planners in making prioritization and investment decisions for road–rail at-grade crossing separations. The report provides a comprehensive means of comparing similar project alternatives within a specific rail corridor. Planning factors include economic, environmental, and community livability factors to support a robust decision process for making grade separation decisions. NCHRP Report 901 also includes railroad crossing assessment tool (RCAT), a multicriteria evaluation tool that considers safety, economic, environmental, and community livability factors in a set of linked Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The report also includes a communications toolkit to help inform and convey to stakeholders and decision makers the relative objective merits of individual road–rail separation projects within corridors.

Book Private Sector Participation in Light Rail Light Metro Transit Initiatives

Download or read book Private Sector Participation in Light Rail Light Metro Transit Initiatives written by Cledan Mandri-Perrott and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to help governments and public authorities to establish effective light rail-light metro transit (LRMT) systems, and focuses on use of Public Private Participation (PPP) arrangements. Rather than identify a single approach, we present options and discuss practical issues related to preparing and implementing new LRMT PPP schemes. The approach is focused on providing information that can be used to make informed decisions, adapted to local policy and objectives. The material presented is intended as a practical guide to developing LRMT PPPs in both developed and developing countries. This work endeavors to provide answers to readers questions regarding how to successfully incorporate private sector participation in LRMT with a lesser emphasis on why LRMT and the private sector may be beneficial. The primary focus of this text is guiding the reader from design through to project implementation. It starts from the premise that underlying transport policy decisions will have already been made and that LRMT has already been identified as the appropriate transport solution. We have included some limited discussion of policy and technical issues where these directly impact the LRMT PPP approach. The approach is presented in nine sections, and in preparing it the author drew on current international LRMT PPP experience, through a series of interviews and case studies. The sections covered are: 1. Urban Transport and Light Rail/Light Metro Transit (LRMT) 2. Selected Technical Aspects 3. Incorporating Private Sector Participation in LRMT Initiatives 4. Understanding and Allocating Risk 5. Specifications, Oversight and Performance Management 6. Funding and finance 7. Developing a PPP Agreement 8. Procurement 9. Conclusions and Recommendations

Book The Economics of Railroad Safety

Download or read book The Economics of Railroad Safety written by Ian Savage and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American public has a fascination with railroad wrecks that goes back a long way. One hundred years ago, staged railroad accidents were popular events. At the Iowa State fair in 1896, 89,000 people paid $20 each, at current prices, to see two trains, throttles wide open, collide with each other. "Head-on Joe" Connolly made a business out of "cornfield meets" holding seventy-three events in thirty-six years. Picture books of train wrecks do good business presumably because a train wreck can guarantee a spectacular destruction of property without the messy loss of life associated with aircraft accidents. A "train wreck" has also entered the popular vocabulary in a most unusual way. When political manoeuvering leads to failure to pass the federal budget, and a shutdown is likely of government services, this is widely called a "train wreck. " In business and team sports, bumbling and lack of coordination leading to a spectacular and public failure to perform is also called "causing a train wreck. " A person or organization who is disorganized may be labelled a "train wreck. " It is therefore not surprising that the public perception of the safety of railroads centers on images of twisted metal and burning tank cars, and a general feeling that these events occur quite often. After a series of railroad accidents, such as occurred in the winter of 1996 or the summer of 1997, there are inevitable calls that government "should do something.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
