Book Valuation of Fleeting Opportunities

Download or read book Valuation of Fleeting Opportunities written by Ibrahim Saad Almojel and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is concerned with the study of problems that involve fleeting opportunities. These are situations with limited capacity and a stream of opportunities on which the decision maker must decide whether to capitalize as they occur. One example is the evaluation of business proposals by Venture Capitalists (VC). I have developed a process to help decision makers in such situations set their policies and answer valuation questions. In the VC context, this process helps evaluate the firm itself or the value of a partner in hiring/firing situations. It can also help the organization's decision makers determine the value of information-gathering activities for different deals at different situations. Our solution is based on three steps. In the first, we assess the frame and decision basis. In the second, we build the valuation funnel. In the third, we apply the results of the valuation funnel to decisions regarding the deal flow and specifically to deals as they arrive. We assume that the risk preference of the decision maker follows a linear or an exponential utility function. We formulate the generic problem in the valuation funnel as a dynamic program wherein the decision maker can either accept a given deal directly, reject it directly, or seek further information on its potential and then decide whether to accept it or not. This approach is illustrated in this dissertation through several examples. Our results show well-behaved characteristics of the optimal policy, deal flow value, and the value of information and other alternatives over time and capacity. To enable these results, we developed the power u-function further and defined a u-value multiplier and certain equivalent multipliers. We also studied different approximations for the power u-curve based on few moments of the underlying distribution. The system we created gives a valuation template for the fleeting opportunities problem. This template allows decision makers to address single opportunities as they occur and guides their approach to the deal flow as a whole. We believe this template will help to extend the application of Decision Analysis and spur more research within the fleeting opportunities problem and, more generally, valuation problems. Our process allows us a valuation template for problems fitting the fleeting opportunities description. This, we hope, will extend the use of Decision Analysis into new fields.

Book Built on Value

Download or read book Built on Value written by Weiwei Huang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. This book presents the concept of value as the central component to success and longevity of the global ICT industry player, Huawei. It provides examples of how Huawei focuses on customers to pursue sustainable and profitable growth rather than focusing on capital market valuation which is a familiar scenario among Western companies. It is the business departments that are the creators of value for Huawei, while the finance department is tasked to provide support and services to those business departments during the value creation process. The book illustrates how Huawei Finance sets rules, allocates resources, and builds centers of expertise all over the world to address future uncertainties. More than a decade ago Huawei dedicated seven years to implement the Integrated Financial Services (IFS) Transformation Program with the help of IBM consultants. This book also draws on the leading concepts and successful experience of the IFS Transformation Program. Huawei Finance adopts three types of centralized vertical management from the top down: treasury, accounting, and auditing. It does not transfer such central authority down to lower levels, but delegates all other authority to business organizations across all levels. This management model represents the focus of this book. Built on Value provides an overview of Huawei's finance management and will help academic researchers in Business/Management, as well as practitioners in industry, an accurate and in-depth understanding of Huawei as a company.

Download or read book From Valuing to Value written by David Sobel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subjective accounts of well-being and reasons for action have a remarkable pedigree. The idea that normativity flows from what an agent cares about-that something is valuable because it is valued-has appealed to a wide range of great thinkers. But at the same time this idea has seemed to many of the best minds in ethics to be outrageous or worse, not least because it seems to threaten the status of morality. Mutual incomprehension looms over the discussion. From Valuing to Value, written by an influential former critic of subjectivism, owns up to the problematic features to which critics have pointed while arguing that such criticisms can be blunted and the overall view rendered defensible. In this collection of his essays David Sobel does not shrink from acknowledging the real tension between subjective views of reasons and morality, yet argues that such a tension does not undermine subjectivism. In this volume the fundamental commitments of subjectivism are clarified and revealed to be rather plausible and well-motivated, while the most influential criticisms of subjectivism are straightforwardly addressed and found wanting.

Book Social Media and the Value of Truth

Download or read book Social Media and the Value of Truth written by Berrin Beasley and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social media is ubiquitous. From Facebook and Twitter to YouTube, the blogosphere, and Massively Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Games, people have plugged into numerous online venues for social, intellectual, and leisure activities. The pervasiveness of social media calls for ethical reflection, and one of the most pertinent values at stake is that of truth. Current figures estimate there are more than 1 billion social media users worldwide with the ability to connect with people who share similar interests, to present themselves as experts on anything and everything no matter their qualifications, and to contribute the types of factual information formerly limited to professional communication outlets such as news agencies. It’s this wide-ranging definition of truth that demands evaluation of the myriad ways social media affect society. This volume does just that by collecting insights from leading experts in the communication and philosophy disciplines as they examine a variety of issues related to the value of truth in the realm of social media.
