Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valley Pump Co., Steam and Power Pumps, 1885 AS Boiler fteding is usually heavy continuous w01k, we recommend a Size large enough to keep up the supply Of water in the Boiler when the Pumpf is run slowly. This avoids the concussmn and jar of the pipes and connections which Is always noticeable when Pumps are run fast on this Wo.rk For feeding hot water, set the Pump below the supply, so the water will flow into it, as hot water cannot be lifted by suction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Pumps: Instruction Paper The most common form of forcing pump is the double-acting piston type as seen in Fig. 16. As the piston P moves to the right, it will create a suction in the left-hand end of the cylinder, drawing in water through the valves AA and the suction pipe S. At the same time pressure will be exerted in the right-hand end of the cylinder and water will be forced out of valves D, D, into the discharge chamber and up the pipe K. On the reverse stroke, water will be drawn in at valves a, al and forced out Of DD. The piston must, of course, be packed water tight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pumping Machinery: A Practical Hand-Book Relating to the Construction and Management of Steam and Power Pumping Machines It is not probable that any satisfactory device for raising water is lost to us, although its history has long since been forgotten, the fact of utility has been the very means of its preservation nor did the great invasions and conquests of the ancient world affect unfavorably the development of this useful art, for water was alike essential to the conqueror and the con quered. Book Present Practice in Deep Well Pumping Classic Reprint

Download or read book Present Practice in Deep Well Pumping Classic Reprint written by Harry Kelley Rubey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present Practice in Deep Well Pumping Many pumps are manufactured with the steam engine attached, a combination which minimizes the loss of energy due to the trans mission of the power from some comparatively distant source. It also reduces the space required for the pumps, which is sometimes important. The majority of the larger pumps, however, are run by separate engines as by this means much better efficiencies for the steam can be obtained. Electricity may be used for running deep well pumps and in many cases is economical although the mechanical efficiency may be small. The advantage lies in the fact that little atten tion is required. At De Kalb, Illinois the pumps are driven by electricity, the regular attendants of the electric plant visit ing the pumps twice each day. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pumping Machinery a Treatise on the History, Design, Construction, and Operation of Various, Forms of Pumps The book is intended for the use of those Who have studied hydraulics, mechanics, and the strength of materials. It is intended to develop certain general principles of mechanics Which are applicable to pumping machinery as Well as to train the, student in application of certain of the theoretical portions of the studies of an engineering course. The first two chapters are devoted to the development of pumping machinery, because the author feels the need, of all engineers, of a more intimate knowledge of the great works of the early members of the profession. The pump is so closely allied With the steam engine in early times that this history traces the early ferms of that machine. The historical works mentioned in the list of text-books in the bibliography as well as the historical articles given in the same catalogue have been indispensable in the preparation of these chapters. Book The History of the London Water Industry 1580 1820

Download or read book The History of the London Water Industry 1580 1820 written by Leslie Tomory and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did pre-industrial London build the biggest water supply industry on earth? Beginning in 1580, a number of competing London companies sold water directly to consumers through a large network of wooden mains in the expanding metropolis. This new water industry flourished throughout the 1600s, eventually expanding to serve tens of thousands of homes. By the late eighteenth century, more than 80 percent of the city’s houses had water connections—making London the best-served metropolis in the world while demonstrating that it was legally, commercially, and technologically possible to run an infrastructure network within the largest city on earth. In this richly detailed book, historian Leslie Tomory shows how new technologies imported from the Continent, including waterwheel-driven piston pumps, spurred the rapid growth of London’s water industry. The business was further sustained by an explosion in consumer demand, particularly in the city’s wealthy West End. Meanwhile, several key local innovations reshaped the industry by enlarging the size of the supply network. By 1800, the success of London’s water industry made it a model for other cities in Europe and beyond as they began to build their own water networks. The city’s water infrastructure even inspired builders of other large-scale urban projects, including gas and sewage supply networks. The History of the London Water Industry, 1580–1820 explores the technological, cultural, and mercantile factors that created and sustained this remarkable industry. Tomory examines how the joint-stock form became popular with water companies, providing a stable legal structure that allowed for expansion. He also explains how the roots of the London water industry’s divergence from the Continent and even from other British cities was rooted both in the size of London as a market and in the late seventeenth-century consumer revolution. This fascinating and unique study of essential utilities in the early modern period will interest business historians and historians of science and technology alike.

Book The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844

Download or read book The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of The Fingerprint Sourcebook originated during a meeting in April 2002. Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.
