Book Continuing Higher Education and Lifelong Learning

Download or read book Continuing Higher Education and Lifelong Learning written by Michaela Knust and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anke Hanft and Michaela Knust The present study examines and compares the structure and organisation of c- tinuing higher education in six countries: Austria, Finland, France, Germany, the UK and the USA. The focus is not just on current continuing education provisions at higher education institutions but also on the institutions themselves and their surrounding milieu. The study also attempts to move away from a purely national angle and to approach the topic from an international perspective. The conclusion is reached that when it comes to the development, establishment and professional implementation of continuing education provisions, German higher education ins- tutions lag behind the other countries in the comparison in almost all areas. The main ndings in terms of the three levels ‘system’, ‘institution’, and ‘programme’ are summarised below. 1 Continuing Education in the Higher Education System There are considerable divergences, both nationally and internationally, in the d- inition of the German term “wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung” (“academic c- tinuing education”). In the English-speaking world, a variety of terms such as “lifelong learning”, “adult education”, “continuing education”, “continuing higher education”, “university-level continuing education” or “continuing professional development” are often used as synonyms without any precise differentiation – and this is not perceived as a problem.

Book Global Perspectives on Recognising Non formal and Informal Learning

Download or read book Global Perspectives on Recognising Non formal and Informal Learning written by Madhu Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the relevance of recognition and validation of non-formal and informal learning education and training, the workplace and society. In an increasing number of countries, it is at the top of the policy and research agenda ranking among the possible ways to redress the glaring lack of relevant academic and vocational qualifications and to promote the development of competences and certification procedures which recognise different types of learning, including formal, non-formal and informal learning. The aim of the book is therefore to present and share experience, expertise and lessons in such a way that enables its effective and immediate use across the full spectrum of country contexts, whether in the developing or developed world. It examines the importance of meeting institutional and political requirements that give genuine value to the recognition of non-formal and informal learning; it shows why recognition is important and clarifies its usefulness and the role it serves in education, working life and voluntary work; it emphasises the importance of the coordination, interests, motivations, trust and acceptance by all stakeholders. The volume is also premised on an understanding of a learning society, in which all social and cultural groups, irrespective of gender, race, social class, ethnicity, mental health difficulties are entitled to quality learning throughout their lives. Overall the thrust is to see the importance of recognising non-formal and informal learning as part of the larger movement for re-directing education and training for change. This change is one that builds on an equitable society and economy and on sustainable development principles and values such as respect for others, respect for difference and diversity, exploration and dialogue.

Book Making Learning Visible

Download or read book Making Learning Visible written by Jens Bjørnåvold and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Report presents an overview of European initiatives to make the identification, assessment and recognition of learning which takes place outside formal education and training institutions i.e.non-formal learning, more visible. Its invisibility is increasingly perceived as a problem affecting competence development at all levels from the individual to society as a whole. This Report is based on fourteen national reports commissioned 1997-1999 and includes information from other sources including the EU. Following the introduction, the report is in five chapters. Chapter 2 looks at basic theoretical issues such as the character of non-formal learning and the political implications of setting up systems in this area. Chapter 3 outlines initiatives and developments in the member states. Chapter 4 presents and discusses initiatives at the EU level, focusing on the white paper on teaching and learning and on experiences from the Leonardo da Vinci programme. Chapter 5 analyses the previous chapters and concluding remarks are presented in Chapter 6. The conclusion looks at why there has been a sudden burst of activity and interest in questions linked to non-formal learning and at how the positive elements of this activity can be supported.
