Book Valid Reliable and Appropriate Assessments for Adult English Language Learners

Download or read book Valid Reliable and Appropriate Assessments for Adult English Language Learners written by Dorry Kenyon and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensuring that language tests for adult English language learners are appropriate, valid, and reliable is a challenge. Performance-based assessments are complex to develop and implement. Yet, because the focus of assessment, both in the National Reporting System for Adult Education (NRS) descriptors and in the Department of Education's definition of content standards, is on what learners can do with the language, performance assessments are worth developing and validating. As program staff choose assessments that meet current accountability requirements, they can take the following steps to ensure that valid, reliable, and appropriate assessments are chosen for their learners: (1) Review the assessment and technical information provided by the test developer to determine that what the assessment purports to measure reflects real-life tasks; Review the technical manual to ascertain that the test developers have demonstrated that reliability can be achieved; and provide adequate resources to train test administrators and raters to maintain reliability of test administration and scoring; and (2) Post-test only after an adequate amount of instructional time has taken place to demonstrate level gain (currently, assessment of learner gains is based on the NRS descriptors; over the next few years, content standards will be implemented as well.).

Book Self assessment of Foreign Language Skills

Download or read book Self assessment of Foreign Language Skills written by Mats Oskarsson and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of research in self-assessment techniques for foreign language skills is based on a survey of the literature and the results of a survey of teachers, researchers, and administrators in adult education centers in many areas of the world. Two late 1970s surveys of self-assessment research and pilot experiments concerning the general validity and usefulness of learners' estimates are described, and more recent research is reviewed. A growing body of research on the use of self-assessment procedures for continuous evaluation purposes is also examined, and the survey results are reported. The pattern emerging is of consistent overall agreement of self-estimates and external criteria, but the need for practice in autonomous learning and self-directed evaluation is emphasized in some of the sources, and it is suggested that teacher training in these areas is a further prerequisite for effective development of self-evaluation techniques. A variety of self-assessment aids are described and illustrated, and it is noted that the kind of instrument seeming to yield the most accurate information consists of descriptions of concrete linguistic situations that the learner can interpret and evaluate in behavioral terms. Implications of the findings and areas needing further study are discussed. (Author/MSE)

Book Performance Assessments for Adult Education

Download or read book Performance Assessments for Adult Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, the nomenclature of adult education includes adult literacy, adult secondary education, and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) services provided to undereducated and limited English proficient adults. Those receiving adult education services have diverse reasons for seeking additional education. With the passage of the WIA, the assessment of adult education students became mandatory-regardless of their reasons for seeking services. The law does allow the states and local programs flexibility in selecting the most appropriate assessment for the student. The purpose of the NRC's workshop was to explore issues related to efforts to measure learning gains in adult basic education programs, with a focus on performance-based assessments.
