Download or read book Valhalla the Myths of Norseland a Saga in Twelve Parts written by Julia Clinton Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valhalla the Myths of Norseland, a Saga, in Twelve Parts What a curious fact it is, that among us, English-speaking people, scholarly investigation has clung rather to the classic lore and mythology of Greece and Rome, than to the less classic, but far purer and truer religion of the North. It is much to be deplored that so slight a knowledge of Scandinavian Mythology prevails, popularly, with those who boast descent from Hengist and Horsa, and whose pride it is that in their veins flows the blood that long ago thrilled through the bold hearts of the Vikings, descendants of the old Norse-Gods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a fine example of the rising late 19th century interest in mythology beyond the typical bible-related classics of Rome and its prior counterparts in Greece. Containing a series of twelve Norse legends, it also includes a fairly lengthy (and handy) final index of terms. Of especial note for some occult paths is the inclusion of regeneration after Ragnarok here; this is compared by the author of this work with the story of the resurrection of Revelation even as the Norse deities are (occasionally helpfully) compared to the Roman.

Book The American Discovery of the Norse

Download or read book The American Discovery of the Norse written by Erik Ingvar Thurin and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The interest of a group of American writers in the Norse (Viking Age Scandinavians) began to develop in the late 1830s, reaching its high point at mid-century and tapering off after the Civil War as the members of the group neared the end of their careers (only one of the authors discussed, Julia Clinton Jones, joins the club at the end of the period)." "This period, defined as the original phase of the American discovery of the Norse, features two essayists, Emerson and Thoreau, who refer to the Norse in writing on a variety of topics. Fiction is represented by Melville alone (American writers of fiction like Stowe and Hawthorne shun the Norse). Neither the essayists nor Melville uses Norse themes as their primary subject. That is reserved for the poets: Lowell, Whittier, Taylor, Longfellow, and Julia Clinton Jones."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: H.A. Guerber's classic collection of Norse Mythology, including the greater and lesser figures of Asgard and Valhalla: Odin, Thor, Loki, and more, as well as monsters of the realms, together with beautiful illustrations.Undoubtedly Northern mythology has exercised a deep influence upon our customs, laws, and language, and there has been, therefore, a great unconscious inspiration flowing from these into English literature. The most distinctive traits of this mythology are a peculiar grim humour, to be found in the religion of no other race, and a dark thread of tragedy which runs throughout the whole woof, and these characteristics, touching both extremes, are writ large over English literature.

Book The Cambridge History of Scandinavia

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Scandinavia written by Knut Helle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comprehensive exposition of both the prehistory and medieval history of the whole of Scandinavia. The first part of the volume surveys the prehistoric and historic Scandinavian landscape and its natural resources, and tells how man took possession of this landscape, adapting culturally to changing natural conditions and developing various types of community throughout the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages. The rest - and most substantial part of the volume - deals with the history of Scandinavia from the Viking Age to the end of the Scandinavian Middle Ages (c. 1520). The external Viking expansion opened Scandinavia to European influence to a hitherto unknown degree. A Christian church organisation was established, the first towns came into being, and the unification of the three medieval kingdoms of Scandinavia began, coinciding with the formation of the unique Icelandic 'Free State'.

Download or read book The Boat of a Million Years written by Poul Anderson and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book and Hugo and Nebula Award Finalist: This epic chronicle of ten immortals over the course of history “succeeds admirably” (The New York Times). The immortals are ten individuals born in antiquity from various cultures. Immune to disease, able to heal themselves from injuries, they will never die of old age—although they can fall victim to catastrophic wounds. They have walked among mortals for millennia, traveling across the world, trying to understand their special gifts while searching for one another in the hope of finding some meaning in a life that may go on forever. Following their individual stories over the course of human history and beyond into a richly imagined future, “one of science fiction’s most revered writers” (USA Today) weaves a broad tapestry that is “ambitious in scope, meticulous in detail, polished in style” (Library Journal).

Book Might Is Right Or Survival of the Fittest

Download or read book Might Is Right Or Survival of the Fittest written by Ragnar Redbeard and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2014-07-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is unabridged, original text of this infamous book. Might Is Right, or The Survival of the Fittest, is a book by pseudonymous author Ragnar Redbeard. First published in 1890, it heavily advocates social Darwinism, amoralism, and psychological hedonism. In Might is Right, Redbeard rejects conventional ideas of human and natural rights and argues that only strength or physical might can establish moral right (la Callicles). Libertarian historian James J. Martin called it "surely one of the most incendiary works ever to be published anywhere." Leo Tolstoy discussed the philosophy of Might Is Right in his 1897 essay What Is Art?: "The substance of this book, as it is expressed in the editor's preface, is that to measure "right" by the false philosophy of the Hebrew prophets and "weepful" Messiahs is madness. Right is not the offspring of doctrine, but of power. All laws, commandments, or doctrines as to not doing to another what you do not wish done to you, have no inherent authority whatever, but receive it only from the club, the gallows, and the sword. A man truly free is under no obligation to obey any injunction, human or divine. Obedience is the sign of the degenerate. Disobedience is the stamp of the hero. Men should not be bound by moral rules invented by their foes. The whole world is a slippery battlefield. Ideal justice demands that the vanquished should be exploited, emasculated, and scorned. The free and brave may seize the world. And, therefore, there should be eternal war for life, for land, for love, for women, for power, and for gold. The earth and its treasures is "booty for the bold." The author has evidently by himself, independently of Nietzsche, come to the same conclusions which are professed by the new artists."

Book The Origins and Role of Same Sex Relations in Human Societies

Download or read book The Origins and Role of Same Sex Relations in Human Societies written by James Neill and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work draws on a vast range of research into human sexuality to demonstrate that homosexuality is not a phenomenon limited to a small minority of society, but is an aspect of a complex sexual harmony that the human race inherited from its animal ancestors. Through a survey of the patterns of sexual expression found among animals and among societies around the world, and an examination of the functional role homosexual behavior has played among animal species and human societies alike, the author arrives at some provocative conclusions: that a homosexual or bisexual phase is a normal part of sexual development, that same-sex relations play an important balancing role in regulating human reproduction, that many societies have institutionalized homosexual traditions in the past, and that the harsh condemnation of homosexuality in Western society is a relatively recent phenomenon, unique among world societies throughout history. This well researched and meticulously documented book is the first that integrates into a coherent picture the startling revelations about human sexuality coming from the recent work of sexual researchers, psychologists, anthropologists and historians. The view that emerges, of an ambisexual human species whose complex sexual harmony is being thwarted by the imposition of an artificial understanding of nature, represents a new way of thinking about sex.
