Not even at the illustrious court of Queen Elizabeth, where her innocent, violet-eyed beauty fired the hearts of England's most gallant gentry, especially the roguish Earl of Kempe and the irrepressible Lord Padraic Burke. But her innocence shattered when a deathbed confession revealed that her true father might not have been Lord Bliss but the lustful Sultan Murad of Istanbul. Determined to find the truth, Valentina sets sail for the East, a voyage of unsurpassed danger . . . and sensual discovery. Lavish, sexy, magnificent—Bertrice Small's Lost Love Found is a fitting tribute to the unforgettable heroine who rivals her famous aunt, Skye O'Malley, in grace, grandeur, and sensual daring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Michelangelo Antonioni became one of the icons of “modernist” cinema in the 1960s, his position in the pantheon of great directors has never been quite secure. Unlike his famous contemporaries, such asIngmar Bergman and Luchino Visconti, whose essential contribution to the art of cinema is hardly ever questioned, Antonioni's work has been repeatedly denigrated from many angles for both aesthetic and political reasons. Though the historical importance of some of Antonioni's films as an incarnation of certain attitudes and problems characteristic of the 1960s and 70s is not denied, they are often considered passé, artificial and boring. Contesting prevalent readings, which focus on existential and psychological motifs involving anxiety and the malady of sentiments, this book offers a re-evaluation of Antonioni's most important films interpreted as political cinema engaged with issues which are still crucial in the 21st century. Far from being politically neutral, Antonioni's oblique and “abstract” approach makes possible the prising open and devaluation of the morally and politically constrictive “organic” narrative structures. HIs approach overthrows the primacy of character and plot, on the one hand, by showing them to be emanations of the spectral materiality of capital, and, on the other hand, by allowing for an opening into the utopian dimension, implying engagement in the rethinking of our attachments to the world.

Book Queering Masculinities in Language and Culture

Download or read book Queering Masculinities in Language and Culture written by Paul Baker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we learn what it means to be a man? And how do we learn to question what it means to be a man? This collection comprises a set of original interdisciplinary chapters on the linguistic and cultural representations of queer masculinities in a range of new and older media: television, film, online forums, news reporting, advertising and fiction. This innovative work examines new and emerging forms of gender hybridisation in relation to complex socialisation and immigration contexts including the role of EU institutions in ascertaining asylum seekers’ sexual orientation, and the European laws on gender policy. The book employs numerous analytical approaches including critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, multimodal analysis, literary criticism and anthropological and social research. The authors show how such texts can disrupt, question or complicate traditional notions of what it means to be a man, queering the idea that men possess fixed identities or desires, instead arguing that masculinity is constantly changing and negotiated through the cultural and political overlapping contexts in which it is regularly produced. These nuanced analyses will bring fresh insights for students and scholars of gender, masculinity and queer studies, linguistics, anthropology and semiotics.

Book excerpt: Sasà grew up in Naples. He never went to school, and instead grew up with street violence and bloodshed, becoming the leader of a gang of boys mixed up with the Camorra by the age of fourteen. At the age of thirty, he was in prison, his life all but mapped out. That’s when Shakespeare steps in. At Sasà’s most hopeless point, he is persuaded to join the prison’s drama troupe. In Shakespeare’s Tempest, Sasà stumbles on what he needs to explain the world which has defined his own life. Set Me Free: How Shakespeare Saved A Life is a story about betrayal, forgiveness and, above all, the transformative power of reading. Salvatore Striano was born in 1972 in Naples. During a stint in prison, he discovered a love of reading and theatre. Striano is now a successful actor and has had a number of roles in cinema and TV, including Cesare deve morire, based on Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar (Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival). ‘An interesting and lively story of an individual who rediscovers his dignity’ Otago Daily Times
